Swiss Army Man is a film that makes you laugh, cry, and wonder "What the fuck am I seeing?" It's great. It also makes you very uncomfortable, but in a good way. It points out stuff we don't really deal with in everyday life that should be addressed between friends and family more often.

I think because he is so keen to move forward as an actor. Most child actors kinda hold too tight to former glories and never progress and that's why so often they devolve into a mess. The fact that Dan, who played such an innocent, universally loved character in his youth, was confident enough to risk showing himself as a farting corpse that gets uncontrolled erections... it's pretty fucking brave and a damn good way to re-market yourself and move forwards. Actually he's gone out of his way to play loads of out-of-the-box but respectable characters. He isn't playing weirdos for the sake of playing weirdos, he just isn't letting weird roles hold him back. He's also been naked on stage and acted in gay sex scenes.

Looking back, Paul Dano is SO underrated. He was already at the time, but, look at him today. I think his freak out in Little Miss Sunshine is the “breakthrough” and he’s only gotten better from there. Fantastic. I hope he gets all the awards. Also, Dan is amazing. He is SO much more than Harry Potter. He’s amazing. Both deserve way more accolades than they have received.

You should see L.I.E., one of Paul's first big films, he also starred with Brian Cox in that movie and The Good Heart. He was funny in Girl Next Door with Emile Hirsch. I think Paul Dano is this generations great 👍 👌 😄 actor/screenwriter/director/partner/and best father. 👌 and who doesn't love Harry Potter?They were great together in Swiss Army Man. I think the dead body is clearly a projection of Hank, who suppress his emotions but his vivid fantasy or hallucination creates the image of Manny, representing his own inner most honest emotions and joys, like farts, vulnerability, love, erection, companioinship.. the image/Manny can blamelessly let out stress and pressure in form of water or farts, it is not restricted by morals, selfpity or judgement. it becomes more evident as the more complex emotions are mirrored in Manny as well and asks the most honest questions which Hank should have asked himself already, Hank can finally have a dialogue with his inner self and sort out his feelings. and Hank evolves from hating himself to loving himself. The jungle is also a symbol emotional barriers, but gaining positivity from the connection, Hank finally frees himself from those and suddenly finds himself in the town, where he will be rejected, blamed, and judged again, but at the end he has his own way to feel free instead of applying the guilt of others on himself.

Thanks what I was thinking too because I’m used to there being hidden meaning. I think maybe part of what makes this interesting is because they ground it so it does not seem like a form of metaphor. Maybe that’s another “weird” part of the film that upsets our outlook. Like we can’t approach it as we would normally analyze something.

Paul Dano is genuinely one of the best actors I've ever seen on film. He's just always so commited to the characters (as is Daniel of course), he really exudes the chameleon trait that all actors wish they had. His scream in Little Miss Sunshine is one of the most powerful moments in cinema. The anguish you see him in is so real. I'll always remember that scene. He also really made There Will Be Blood special. To be able to match the levels of skill of an actor like Daniel Day Lewis, just says so much about his strengths. Hell, even In Swiss Army Man, his melancholy singing, and the way he embodies Sarah when teaching Manny about love. Everything about his performance is magical.

I’ve never been so affected by a movie before this one I related a lot to hanks character and it made me feel more hopeful that no matter how hopeless or alone you feel or how convinced you are that you’re worthless and that one will ever love you, things can change in an instant in a way that you never could’ve expected. There’s that line in one of the songs on the soundtrack “we just have to remember that we’re all here for a purpose and the universe picks it’s time” really stuck with me. Great film

Andrew Deen I liked this movement originally but come on, people are gonna say what their gonna say. If we focus on glorifying how much the disabled have achieved and overcome instead of policing terminology, we can do so much more. People who use the word retarded inappropriately likely see the mentally handicapped as inferior; we feed into that by trying to protect them when they themselves never asked us to. Empowerment is much stronger than protection. Don't just tell him he's wrong about the mentally handicapped, show him :) Just my 2 cents

Zach Antle Actually, that's the movie about. Manny is a part of Hank's personality and that's why Manny farts a lot because he isn't afraid of doing it. The farts represent the things we're afraid of. For instance, talking to the girl u like, singing in the bus or just doing something that makes you feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, Hank is afraid of everything, he cares too much about people's opinion. Therefore, at the end of the movie you can see how Hank farts and he admits it was him because now he's not afraid anymore

Ya but it's also confusing because in one scene, manny says that he could just be part of Hanks imagination, and then in the end he goes back to being dead so my question is was he ever alive or was he just part of Hanks imagination so that hank wouldn't be alone?

My question goes back to the start hank is convinced he was stranded on an island in the Pacific however he was actually a few minutes from society which makes me think he wasn't hallucinating because of a lack of food and maybe lost his mind genuinely prior to the film.

Manny (Radcliffe) saved Hank (Dano), but Hank is Manny. He saved himself by finding himself. He became so lonely that he was found by Manny, who washed ashore. Manny became the catalyst, in a sense, but he was technically always apart of Hank. He just had the opportunity to experience that life changing event. The end kind of shows that Manny, who is probably an anonymous helper, is actually universal, and he was happy to move along to his next lost soul, with a smile, at the end.
