STYLE & DESIGN
I went with The Martin Wholecut in Havana brown, the most vibrant color option, in my opinion. I consider wholecuts next level when it comes to men's shoes. And being my first pair of wholecut oxfords, I was excited to try them on.
If you don't know what wholecuts are, they're essentially a formal dress shoe with the leather uppers crafted in a one-piece construction which makes for an elegant shape and streamlined aesthetic. It's an oxford, but can also be a brogue. The wholecut's sleek appearance and vivid Havana brown color makes them perhaps the most eye catching pair of shoes I own.
Simply put, Paul Evans shoes are beautiful and bold, and none moreso than The Martin Wholecut.
QUALITY & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Paul Evans shoes are designed in New York and crafted by hand in Italy (Naples), the epicenter of the fashion world. They're made with full grain, Italian calfskin leather.
These handmade shoes are Blake welted (or Blake stitched), which is a hallmark of quality shoe construction. A Blake construction allows for re-soling, a slick, stylish aesthetic, and maximum comfort. Many would say that a Goodyear welt is an indication of a higher quality shoe, but that's simply not true. Each have their own unique advantages.
In short, Goodyear welted shoes have outsoles stitched by hand or machine, outside the edge of the insole, which makes it easier for cobblers to re-sole the shoes.
With a Blake welt, the leather upper is stitched on the inside of the shoe, which requires a specialized machine. This makes Blake welt shoes more difficult to re-sole, but with a lighter and sleeker aesthetic than Goodyear welted shoes.
I scanned the shoe over and over and couldn't find any visible imperfections with the leather or stitching, which would be easy to spot on such a naked shoe.

Sure do, asked some questions and got a reply from the founder calling me an idiot! Buyer beware. Ask yourself why a New York finance guy would get into selling shoes that he just buys from a third party factory in Italy to resell online.

Nice vid- I have Paul Evans Brando semi brogue oxfords, and the Van Damme loafers- i get more compliments on those shoes than i ever have before- Recommend putting a rubber sole on the bottom of the shoes as my loafers are already getting a hole on the bottom- they are only a year old- I'd like to get some double monks, but am balking because of the price- ace marks has some nice looking ones, and are a lot cheaper for what I believe is the same quality

dang, you've must really worn them in. I've never come close to wearing any of my shoes down to a hole on the bottom. Never put a rubber sole on the bottoms of my shoes just yet, but may consider it for certain pairs in the future. i agree with you, you can get some great dub monks for $150-200 with the right brands.

I've had a similar experience to some of those related here. I ordered two pair of shoes at a ridiculous discount over New Year, but when the first arrived and didn't fit, they cancelled the second pair and, although they gave me the same discount in dollars, it now came off the higher list price of the shoes, costing me about $100 more total. Overall, customer service was lousy. But the shoes are lovely, which is why I decided to pay the difference and splurge. I agree with others here that I wouldn't buy these at the $400 price point, but at even $300, they are a decent value. I paid less than $250 each for my two pair. The leather in these shoes is noticeably higher quality than the Ace Marks or Meermins. The craftsmanship is about the same, maybe a shade higher in the detailing. The Blake stitching is fine, and is not inferior functionally to Goodyear...it looks more stylish and elegant, but is not as rugged, which is a perfectly legitimate tradeoff. Shoes like Allen Edmonds are as well-made (they are not noticeably superior in craftsmanship as some have suggested, and I own both brands), but are clunky-looking by comparison, with the Goodyear welt. Like most other fashion items, the Italian stuff is stylish, but not as robust as, say, American-made goods. But that doesn't mean these aren't a good value (at the right price). They do look fantastic when new, and if you take care of them, seem to wear just fine. Will they last 10 years? I don't know, but I generally don't want to keep shoes for 10 years...even recrafted, at that point, they look like old shoes. And a final point, to second what some others here have said...both of these shoes get more compliments than any other shoes in memory.

Congratulations on a great video. First time viewer here. I'm a bit torn on this particular shoe. Honestly I don't exactly know how I'd best wear this shoe- it has a very unique build, that "naked" look as you put it seems to mute the shoe and I don't know how to pull that off in a outfit. I'm more towards the upper momentum of dress style for this particular shoe- the simpler the shoe the more formal the occasion and dress code so I guess I'd wear this shoe with suits. I'll be checking you out, you had my interest now you have my curiosity. 😉

Great review. I love how you posed the question of if Paul Evans, Gucci, etc... are worth it. Your answer was PC but your face says it all lol 😂. I think the Paul Evans look great but the price point does not resonate w/ my budget so I would look for elsewhere for a Blake stitch shoe. While the Blake stitch provides a sleeker look best suited for a more refined look, dancing , dining, dates, etc..., a Goodyear Welt (GYW), leans more towards work / business attire. Both have a place in a stylish wardrobe. Although a Blake stitch is can be re-soled, I've not seen much discussion on recrafting Blake stitch shoes unlike the vast amount of info and recraft services that is available for GYW. I get the impression that most treat Blake stitch as disposable. Have you looked into the cost of recrafting a Blake Stitch such as a Paul Evans?
@gentwithin
@gentwithin 6 жыл бұрын
pattgsm I agree that both GYW and Blake have a place in a stylish man's wardrobe. There are some videos I've seen of the Blake construction process, but there's not much out there on cost. Although a quick search on PE, they offer a cobbler concierge service for $110 which includes full sole, heel replacement, cleaning and all that. Thanks for chiming in my man

Hey Khoiii, have been following the channel and like your videos. Have you considered a match up between Ace Marks and Paul Evans? I find the aesthetics pretty close, although Ace Marks has quite a few bold styles as well in addition to the regular colorways, and they come at below the price point of Paul Evans. Same construction, same leather, same handcrafted details. Any thoughts? Thanks and good luck!
@gentwithin

Hey Kartikeya, appreciate that you're following along. I'll have to look into Ace Marks, I've heard good things about them and you're right they do look like they have bolder styles with the leather, suede blends. Thanks for the suggestion!

Love your channel thank you for these reviews. Wanted share my experience: 1. A nice shoe as expected, but in my option nothing special then AE. AceMark’s last is most elegant among them. My wholecut don’t have metal eyelet which I find unacceptable for a 400 shoe as the direct tension from laces will damage the leather eventually. Most shoes in this class will always have hidden metal eyelet. 2. Their customer service is terrible: the First shoe, sizing issue, not crazy about the color but no even exchange even just the size. They will refund me the promo price 299 and currently, these shoes are not on sale so I can’t do any exchange unless I want to add $100
@gentwithin

Paul Evans is the worst company I've ever dealt with. I bought a pair nearly a year ago and I still haven't gotten a pair that fits correctly. You have to wait 3 months after you order to get the first pair. If they don't fit, you need to wait 3 months or so to get the next size up. The whole experience has been a nightmare thus far and the customer service is garbage. They really don't care about whether or not it's a miserable experience or not.

My suggestion to the Gentleman Within is to stop promoting Paul Evans through this video for the sake of maintaining your own credibility. The general consensus among buyers is that Paul Evans is a terrible company, shoes are overpriced and customer service is awful. On purpose they delayed my refund on the returned shoes, did not reply to my initial email inquiry regarding refunds. It seems they want to hold on to your money as long as they could as it gives them working capital, shady practice. They did not have the courtesy to acknowledge delay in processing refund. I had to dispute the transaction with bank, after that I received an email from Paul Evans customer service full of abusive language directed toward me. What kind of business abuses customers on the email!
