Absolute Paul Gilbert GOLD this video. This is right at the time when he was at the top of his game and playing on loads of Roadrunner stuff as well as mentoring the likes of Joey Tafolla. What an incredible scene that must've been to be involved in.

Love those two licks in the intro of Sacrifice, so majestic. Him and Bouillet were the perfect shred's duo. Wish Paul played still like this. At least at times.

PG gave away the secret: He said he took the maj7 sweep shape from Frank Gambale’s Speed Picking video. Well if you’re not too attached to alternate picking consider switching to economy picking. You can achieve cleaner, faster velocities way less laboriously.

That’s very true, but why choose at all when you can have the whole lot!!!! ;) alternate, economy, hybrid, swybrid, gypsy, 3/4 picking, half picking, tapping, rock legato with extreme pulloffs and more traditional true legato with all hammers :) all just tools at one’s disposal. I dig em ALL!

I can confirm this, my playing is so much faster and cleaner after using the economy picking, playing guitar is so much fun to me now because i didn't have to sit for hours everyday to maintain my alternate picking's accuracy

Why are y'all saying Paul doesn't shred like this anymore? Yes he does, the style of the song may be different but he still uses a lot of the same shredding in his solos/ other sections. There's a difference between not doing it at all and not doing it ALL the time. Paul used to shred like this all the time, now he's toned it back a bit but still can and does use a lot of these techniques.

I love PG, and I realize he's young here, this is why there's less instruction targeting "harmonic structure" it's more of an exhibition of targeting speed and accuracy and stretching riff synonyms.

PG at his peak...why he doesn´t play like this anymore?
@Christian-vq8rd
@Christian-vq8rd 4 жыл бұрын
A couple readons: he's 30+years older, his interests, tastes, desires, goals, etc. have changed, and lastly, he can't. To stay at this level of skill he'd still have to practice shred type stuff which he's not that in to anymore. He's still an unbelievably technically sophisticated player, but the style of shred he did with Racer X is almost like an athletic competition with your fingers and hands.
@javiermedina6303

@@Christian-vq8rd What i miss the most isn´t so much the speed or complexity, but the aggressiveness of his tone and compositions, mainly his riffs...the intros of Street lethal, You gone too far, Scarified, Loud and Clear, Sacrifice...can´t believe it´s the same guy that is today...but I agree with you, even though i´m certain that he could play this stuff now if he wanted, his tastes and goals have clearly changed.

@@javiermedina6303 Look at Marty Friedman when he left Megadeth. He said at the time the only thing that interested him was Japanese pop. You can get burnt out.and your tastes do change as you said.
@javiermedina6303
@javiermedina6303 4 жыл бұрын
@@Christian-vq8rd Friedman always had diverse musical tastes, (his solo records while being in Megadeth are a prime example), and while he did abandon straight metal for sometime, he had clearly return mutiple times...PG also did a "comeback"in the late 90s and early 00s, with Racer -X , after flirting with pop rock...my arrogant conclussion could be that his identity as a player isn´t so clear to this day.
@livingbeing1113
@livingbeing1113 4 жыл бұрын
From Paul's own mouth, he always thought that this kind of playing and style was somewhat "Spinal Tap'ish", if you get what i mean. A genre easy to mock and parodying, also great and fun of course but strictly a product from the 80s. So yeah he certainly got tired of it, wich is unfortunate since he owned the shred. But in 30 years a musician usually changes. Paul went through many styles over his career, but the shred chops always came out to shine. But after Fuzz Universe in 2010 he really changed musically, going back to more bluesy and fusion stuff. Like Javier said, i too believe that Paul is somewhat still searching for an identity. I just wished he didn't abandon the style and chops that made him who he is.
