He probably has the best guitar in the world. Amazing tone. Don't need to mention that he is the best guitarist ever.

This felt like the old Paul. Maybe the nicest playing I've seen from him in a few years.

That is exactly what I said when a co-worker told me to check him out. The tune that really got me hooked is called Technical Difficulties by Racer X.

The genius of Jimi Hendrix was that he took great risks. The risks didn't always pay off, but that's what made his playing so interesting. There was an element of danger. But with Paul Gilbert, it's different. Everything seems so thoroughly planned out and rehearsed, almost robotic. I know it's not a competition, but I prefer Jimi's style for this song over Paul's style. Jimi's playing seems to come from the heart, like we were glimpsing into his soul. Whereas Paul's playing seems to be purely mechanical, like it is written by an algorithm. Which is still very impressive. Don't get me wrong, Paul is a monster, but I think this song demands a more soulful performance. Paul's tone here is great, but it gets monotonous throughout. His tone lacked dynamics, and therefore stunted his ability to convey emotion.

I really appreciate your comment. Jimi definitely took risks. Personally, i am glad he did with his music. He has certainly influenced me. His use of the wah wah has always been one of my favorite things about his playing.

Wait, Paul Gilbert has ears?!?
@fadetoal6 жыл бұрын
flahprius yeah, no headphones, I'm going to ask him about that. He actually did tell me he has some hearing loss. He said it does not affect his music but mainly with conversation. He has trouble hearing people talk.
@flahprius6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, maybe he's playing master volume Marshalls or they're not cranked so he didn't need the hearing protection. There are a couple of recent interviews where he can't hear the other person (the NAMM one with Lukather, Morse and Petrucci come to mind). Bums me out because Paul is the nicest guy, tons of charisma, killer guitarist and most positive person.
@fadetoal6 жыл бұрын
flahprius I'll have to check those out. Yeah Paul is such a humble guy, very down yo earth. He must have had that young attitude most of us had back in the day, ear plugs? Who needs those! I'm glad he is still at it.

I think Paul can do this song better
@Reissuleipa6 жыл бұрын
Paul is great and I love his playing but he makes the same mistake as so many great guitarists do when covering this song. WAY too long solos. This song is originally just over 2½ minutes long and for a reason. It's a beautiful ballad with a kick ass intro + solo. When you just do random 4 minute solo the song loses it's purpose.
@fadetoal6 жыл бұрын
Reissuleipa as an instrumental guitarist I am biased. I absolutely love it. I could listen to this for days. And have over and over. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I could see how some feel this way, my wife thinks I solo too much all the time, haha!
@Muang-GuitarExperience6 жыл бұрын
Try to play only 3 minutes on the same chord progressions then you will realise how good Paul Gilbert is.
@Phoebedumplings6 жыл бұрын
Reissuleipa for Most players i would agree with you but Paul is just on another level, he makes Long Solos interesting.
@marktrentecosta3 жыл бұрын
Too much shredding and really weak vocal......Jimi would say if he were here today... Take it slowly and try to make your playing have substance and not so much chop and best rock competitive attitude covering the best rock guitar player that has ever lived
@fadetoal3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment. Shred is not everyone's cup of tea. Paul is not only a shred guitarist. If you get a chance, check out his catalog. He actually has an album tribute to Hendrix. It is amazing. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D6XzgvCdDyRU&ved=2ahUKEwiq1NG4hunuAhXHGs0KHQhFAjkQ28sGMAl6BAg3EAc&usg=AOvVaw1VbrKwuhVaI6Y-bw0bJRqA

I really wish Paul would use a Fender Strat, as they're the best for projecting someone's personality, that guitar is quite ugly too.

Hahaha, yeah, some people dont like it. It is actually and Iceman turned upside down and it is called a Fireman. Paul Stanley has the signature Ibanez known as the Iceman. I like them both but I love the S series and RG series body style better myself. I appreciate the comment!
