after all these yrs, paul gilbert is STILL my favorite, along with shawn lane. some of you that talk smack about him, his licks, his tone, ... you don't realize how good he is, and why his tone sounds like this. From yrs of following him, in my opinion, he has always attacked the guitar/fretboard like a concert pianist attacks a piano: with pure and fierce accuracy, clarity, and energy.. and with only a little bit of reverb.( sustain on piano) Ive never met the guy, but since I first started following his career from the time I was in high school back in the 80's, this is what I gathered from him, and was what I also used as a goal/standard while practicing/playing. Paul is very straight forward player., with very few effects. Very clear and in your face.. like a concert pianist. (again, just my observation) :)

Why I like Paul Gilbert - I never hear him overreach. Almost every other guitarist does this, even the most amazing ones out there. They play a difficult passage that is beyond their ability to play cleanly and end up sounding like they're tripping on their own feet, even if its just for a brief moment. Paul, however, seems to exercise great restraint in only playing fast passages that he knows 100% he can control. Everything that comes out of his guitar is absolute precision in execution. Now, he probably messes up all the time behind the scenes when he's practicing by himself (that's how you learn), but he ensures that everything the public gets exposed to is top execution.
@fistoftulkas73355 жыл бұрын
Yep exactly, and he's still playing at hyper speed, totally clean and with unparalleled intensity. Cleanest and best shredder we've ever had, in my opinion, that percussive alternate-picking is perfection.

Cant bear the sound of blistering licks like this? For all those saying his tone is shit and his licks are "repetetive", so fucking what? This is an intro to a DVD where he teaches licks for improvement. This stuff is far from his compositions which are musically majestic. The sole purpose of him playing this is to show his chops and what you can become if you fucking play and enjoy the guitar. Now pick up your damn axes instead of whining about PG playing 89634134 notes per second in your faces.
@Thevitamindealer9 жыл бұрын
Yea I don't think this example was intended to demonstrate musicality necessarily, (even though what he is playing is very musical in logistical terms) I think it's about buttery and accurate technique for the purpose of showing the audience what they can potentially gain from the lesson as far as improving their technique is concerned, which seemed to me to be the main goal of most of these shred god instructional videos.
@wolfgang2007aaaaaaaa9 жыл бұрын
+AstriBlair lol i laugh everytime i watch this cos its so insanely accurate and fast. I also laugh everytime I see a negative comment about this style of playing guitar. Its all music, music is art, and art is a form of expression, what ever style it is you can hear that dedication and time spent practicing to get to a level on your instrument of choice and just play what ever is on your mind...that deserves respect.
@rodrigorivera46797 жыл бұрын
i think all the "negative" coments about the style of gilbert are valid too......the point here in a more deep thought is that music its about an art expression, and i think (considering the year of this guitar lesson also) that this video has 0 musicality because, this has no sense.....this its only a guy taking the musica like an instrument to show his abilities, like a deportist or something else.....misunderstooding the sense of musical direction

It sounds pretty crazy, but in fact it's probably the easiest lick in the entire video. Check out Troy Grady's video series picking mechanics. Paul's hand/pick is locked in what Grady would call upward pick slanting. A musicians (and half musicians) ego have a huge influence on subjective and objective opinions with the likes of these virtuoso demonstrations. And the frailty of the human ego means that jealousy usually comes out on top. Luckily I’ve had the experience of playing to a comparable standard and can say this sounds like the absolute nuts to me. The perfectly picked runs, arpeggio/scale combos. Perfect string jumps. Perfect picking over the E A & D and the transfer between those and the unwound strings. Full shred to hammer on and pull off. All with clever little licks or even just lil technical riffs. It’s just sublime and virtuoso. Paganini when raising the bar for violin virtuosity, wrote little technical exercises like these and nobody criticised him. They all thought he was such a genius that he must have been in league with the devil. And that’s all I see here - a devilish talent!

Paul was actually doing this in his teens. But that's his thing. Petrucci's more of a songwriter with great technique. Two different beasts.

Idk what's with the people saying they want to put their guitars down after seeing Paul spit some fire shred lol. It's actually not hard to build speed like him, it's just making it sound like music is where the separation between shredders and wankers is.
@hollowmenrule7 жыл бұрын
yeah, to incorporate this in music is tough. when done, most shredding music all has that same judas priest/maiden british chug a lug thing, I prefer fusion or something else to this, or else it just sounds like nonsense

Not hard to build speed like Paul Gilbert? I hope ur joking. Possible, yeah, but fucking hard. It takes many years of practicing and dedication.

TheGoldenChodeTV dude, its not easy, it takes hundreds of hours to build speed like that and to be that clean. Its not just the practice, its the self belief and discipline to keep pushing.

I really doubt this is indicative of his ability or best material. I think Ritchie Blackmore called this kind of playing something like, 'technically proficient uninspired wanking'. Nothing melodic or musical in it at all. No emotional inspiration. Which is why I doubt it showcases his best material. His body of work would probably support that .... that is, in his recorded and band-based work, there are probably dozens of solos that are just as technically difficult but also much more melodic and musical.
@livingbeing11134 жыл бұрын
Blackmore couldn't play like this even in his dreams. This is just a shred demonstration for an instructional, all about technique, he isn't trying to make people cry with "soul".
@AgaveBlueTequila4 жыл бұрын
@@livingbeing1113 Totally agree. I'm sure he could do better if he put his mind to it. Paul Gilbert, I mean.
@livingbeing11134 жыл бұрын
@@FlounderVFW I'm sure he would love to have it in his arsenal, this is not wanking, it's a superb display of razor-sharp technique and mastery of it. Not to mention Blackmore can be considered one of the pioneers of neo-classical shred. And like i said, this is just an instructional, where showing technique is obviously the main point. Paul Gilbert's career and countless recordings speak for themselves.
