Dear Greg , He is just fucking right!...i quit playing guitar 40 years ago.... I got a new Tele in 2018, took out My old 100W Amp full of spider webs from storage, because of You... I hate You :D! The thing is... You can just play anything...and that's what I always wanted as a kid but could never come close to. Would be great to see You jam with Jeff Beck as You two have this thing in common of creating sound with any part of your hands flesh, as if actually it was your body creating sound rather than the instrument.

Yeah, it's that either/or thing-he's so good that that sometimes there are thoughts of this is pointless why bother? But he's so inspiring that he does make me want to improve and do the work. Greg is a Wisconsin legend. I have been in the scene here for many years and he has a rabid fan base from many walks of life here…especially in all of the music and band circles here in Wisconsin. I have seen him play with a number of different artists and, despite his incredible guitar chops, he still knows how to serve the song and the artist he is playing with extremely well. He is also so ridiculously funny. We are a blessed bunch here that we get to enjoy the musicality and guitar “guru-ness” of Mr. Greg Koch!
@Marcus_C512 жыл бұрын
Cool to hear your info, I didn't know he was from Wisconsin. That explains it doncha know! Yeah, not only is he a virtuoso guitarist he is so funny he could be working stand-up! (And he basically does when he gigs anyway-ha ha). I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know about him until 8 months ago and how is that even possible? My loss most definitely. Saw one of his live vids and, of course, was completely blown away! There are alot of killer players who play legit chicken pickin' country but not many of them can play superb blues/rock too. Roy Buchanan comes to mind, Tom Bukovac too. I'm sure Brad Paisley or Vince Gill could destroy with some serious rock riffage if they wanted to. Of course there's always the possibility that many of the telemonsters can play rock convincingly but don't often get the opportunity/gig to do so. I played a year of straight country and woah, did I get an up close and personal educational experience! Gained a total appreciation of the style and country musicians are some of the nicest people around!

THE KOCHNESS MONSTER !! I saw him live this summer . During the show I got a lil emotional cause I knew I was witnessing greatness . The promoters for the show didn't promote this show . Love the nickname-ha ha. THAT is a keeper! Sorry to hear about the bad promo, I swear if promoters and record companies had any clue about what they're supposed to be doing, maybe musicians of Greg and his band's caliber would be much better served. And better paid! And yes, it doesn't surprise me that they still killed with only a small crowd. They are totally dedicated, love their music and that's what it's all about!

The telecaster may very well be the most expressive of all guitars. You can literally get anything from a soft, quiet, warm sound to an ice pick of intensity all in one guitar. You can do the same with other guitars to an extent, but a tele seems to do it better and with a more well-rounded degree of authenticity than most other guitars. Greg is obviously a great example of someone who uses the full range of tele sounds to an expert level, but Roy Buchanan was also another tele guy who could use the guitar to express anything and everything. A tele in the hands of a master might just take the cake in terms of expression and versatility.

Greg is great, funny as hell and always inspired. He’s not just some knock off, sure he is an encyclopedia of the great players but he always puts his own unique spin on all of the styles he plays. Most importantly, as a stylist he brings an incredible physical/technical prowess to everything he plays and sounds like nobody else even while evoking his heroes. Go see him live if you have any doubts!
@Marcus_C512 жыл бұрын
Encyclopedia is a very apt word. Hendrix? He has no problem conjuring Jimi vibes, Danny Gatton, Buchanan, Chet Atkins, the three blues Kings etc etc. he's assimilated all of those players styles and has his own rather jawdropping style as well. Very good point on how he retains his individuallity while evoking his heroes-spot on sir! And he wears his Nudies western shirts-so cool!

Players like Greg, to me, their greatest impact is when they do something that surprises you. So many players - especially with blues - is their riffing, while often impressive, just follows similar patterns or whatever. But coming up with strange textures, weird sounds, cool contrasts - the unexpected - that's an ability that separates the really good players from really GREAT ones! And Greg constantly brings that element of surprise. Beck is a lot like that, in differing ways.

I agree... At times Greg does have a sound like SRV. I've lived in Dallas all my life. Stevie was short... (The hat and Boots will trick the eye to make one think otherwise) But, he had ridiculously large, strong hands. If I recall correctly he played tens or 11s. Just like Greg there was an absolute fire that drove that intensity for 90 minutes. I was blessed to get to see him in the fall of 1989 and the dichotomy of the show and watching Jeff Beck open with Stevie as the headliner was absolutely amazing. Both were unbelievably good but the intensity that Stevie played his guitar was unbelievable.

I've seen Greg a couple of time in person, and everything you say about him is true. He is one of the finest guitar players anywhere, bar none. He belongs in the R&R Hall of Fame! I was able to talk with him for a while and he pays attention to everything you say. He's polite, humble, and extremely funny. This is a great video, I'm only sorry I'm discovering it several years after you posted it. but hey, better late...

Greg Koch, Jared James Nichols, Butch Vig, Clyde Stubblefield, Les Paul, the Violent Femmes, the Bodeans, Steve Miller.... Just goes to show that Wisconsin produces great musicians. I'm a southern Wisconsin boy so I am biased. I've been to the Silver Moon where JJN played at the blues jams (not when he was there though) and that place was my goal as a mediocre guitar player. I wanted to play at the Silver Moon's blues jam. The place closed before I considered myself good enough. There was a pub across the highway that had excellent breakfast and I had a handful of hangover omelets there. Greg Koch is a goddamn treasure in this state.

I saw Greg in Rotterdam (Netherlands), performing at a shop and I was impressed. Since then I follow him on FB. He's a great player. I even bought a Tele (not only for Greg, but he did inspire me). Hope to see him in the Netherlands.

One of my fav moves he does is when he frets a chord and the highest pitched note or two are fretted by his index finger (and that is all that finger is doing,no full bar) and he then keeps the lower notes static as he slides the high notes up and down with the index.

Thank you for introducing me to Greg Koch. This guy is a totally amazing guitar player. I love the section he’s playing around the 8:00 mark. Incredible.

Agree wholeheartedly. I’m regularly astounded at what he comes up with

Greg Koch’s playing is what I imagine a musical incarnation of a pitch perfect cartoon squirrel after too much caffeine and sugar running a musical muck. Just “right” enough to be musical, just “wrong” enough to keep you fully engaged.

One thing I love about Greg is that he ain't scared of pushing it to the limit. He's not scared and ventures into chromatic madness and pulls it of with a natural elegance all of his own.
