What I find incredible is that YM managed to reach a level of playability never seen before at the time, even though he was very young. The greatest proof of this is that there are guitarists who only reached a similar level after reaching an advanced age. YM and other guys like him sacrificed the early years of their youth for the sake of the guitar, aiming for this astonishing level. This shows the unsuspecting that it's not just partying that makes a rockstar.

Don´t forget that most of the scale/arpeggio runs you heard on Yngwie´s first records are very much identical to what Uli Jon Roth did on he´s Electric Sun records released 1979 and 1981, and probably recorded a few year before that. Yngwie don´t talk much about Uli but it´s very clear he must have heard Uli. There is also some song from Scorpions time like "Sails of Charon" that have much simlar runs! On the record Beyond the Astral Skyes released 1985 , recorded at about 1981-82 you find it all, arpeggios and runs, and even Zeno Roth , Uli´s brother plays on that record, full skilled on all those licks!
@ivanterrrivel5 ай бұрын
Uli was practically the beginning of the guitar shred or practically a proto Rock shredder, years before the LA guys (Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, George Lynch). And Van Halen in their club days played two songs from Scorpions, "Speedy's Coming" and "catch your train".
@PhillFest5 ай бұрын
You are correct! On the “Mike Varney Spotlight Column” that started it, Yngwie listed Uli Jon Roth AND Al Di Meola along with Richie Blackmore and Allan Holdsworth as influences. Di Meola and Uli never got mentioned after that, at least not in all the interviews I read, but it makes sense when you listen to him the impact those 2 had on him. There’s even an audio recording of when Yngwie visited GIT, Steeler era, where he says that “DiMeola and Uli are my guys”! I’ve heard it
@vincentgarzoli31975 ай бұрын
On the demo tape that Yngwie sent Mike Varney that led to his being reviewed in Varney’s Spotlight column in Guitar Player magazine, Yngwie cites his guitar influences as, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimi Hendrix, Uli “Rote”, ‘Ary Moore and Allan Holdsworth. So, yes, he actually did acknowledge Uli in the beginning.

The amount of billion dollar companies that are using his name his image putting out great products with him is insane! Fender signature model, Seymour Duncan signature model, Dunlop signature model rumor has it they are coming out with two more products with him, Marshall signature model, Ovation signature model, Lewitt microphones the list goes on. Last album he released went straight into the Billboard charts at 80! In China, India, Japan hit the charts at number one! Last European show Sold Out some as much as 5000 seats. Jeff Bezos used his music yes only his music in Blue Original. He is honored in three museums in Sweden, Italy and France. @@Thedownboysfan Paul was a little green then as he had just started teaching. But, he was enthusiastic and just a really good guy. I learned a few runs of his and certain string skipping ideas. Plus some sweep stuff that he doesn't do anymore. I was already an advanced player so I really just learned his certain runs and patterns, etc. Lessons from other teachers were great. Frank Gamble taught me how to sweep/economy pick. I still use his ideas to this day. Scott Henderson was awesome. There were a lot of great teachers there. I have been a pro player for over 30 years so MI was a good place to learn. Is it worth it today? I'm not sure. With online resources it's not really needed to go to school anymore. I still have all of my paper/curriculum from that time. All of the lessons they handed out each week I made into 2 books. They are on my shelf as we speak. I could go on and on, there is a lot to tell. Hope that helps! keep picking!

Paul Gilbert told a different story though. He said 1st time hearing Yngwie made him practice playing fast metronomically cuz he wasn't able to yet. So I'd guess this story happened way after that and that's why Paul was able to quickly explain and replicate it, so it's not his 1st time hearing Yngwie.

Nice story!, Paul was really a brilliant guitar student at G.I.T, he is really the guitar jukebox. But Dave's story actually showed how great Yngwie Malmsteen was at that time. I met a pro guitarist who also graduated at Musicians institute, and He said that in 1985 there is even a course/curriculum named "Yngwie 101" purely made to satisfy the hunger and curiosity of guitar students in order demystify "Rising Force" and how Baroque Classical music and shred is actually a beautiful combination. Imagine a 19 year old guitarist from Sweden and his fretwork is a subject being studied by the best music school and top guitar players. Man, Yngwie FTW.🤘

Probably not just Phrygian. Phrygian Dominant, the 5th mode of harmonic minor. Naturally occurring symmetrical diminished and augmented chords patterns, 3 pairs of semitone combinations that give tension and release, one big minor third gap for distinctive character. Instant gravitas and baroque sound and the kind of lightening fast dark mysterious dramatic passages as already explored centuries ago by violinists and pianists.
