Well George Harrison developed his technique quite a lot over time. Especially later he was able to play his solos with a much better technique. John Lennon is also very underrated as a guitar player. Although I agree with Paul it's not like they still sounded as they didn't improve on their technique over time. I think he really should have pointed that out. The Beatles were also less about solos but about complex chord structures. They used quite unusual chords for a pop bands.

I saw a video of him taking the pentatonic and dropping the 3rd and replacing it with the 4th. All up and down the neck too, not just a box solo. So, like in A minor pentatonic he dropped the C and added back in the F. I was like, wait, you can do that! Lol. Guy is just awesome.

Ok so I have a Paul Gilbert story. Back in 2012 a few friends of mine and I attended the winter namm show. PG was playing at a very small hotel bar one of the nights. It was a killer show. One of my friends who is also a massive Gilbert fan was getting absolutely hammered during the show. Lol. The minute the shows over Paul runs off stage and out the main doors and up a flight of stairs. My friend says “let’s follow him! Maybe we can get an autograph or something.” I said “uh No. that’s a bad idea.” After a few more pleas from him I caved. We go up the stairs and at the end of the hall was a conference room. We could hear talking from inside. My friend opens the door and low and behold there is Paul in the back end of the room about 15’ away standing in his underwear. The moment my friend sees him he blurts out “Dude it’s Paul Gilbert just loud enough that he hears him. At this point my friends got his back to PG and I’m facing him. After PG finishes getting dressed he heads towards us and I’m thinking he’s gonna be super pissed and have us escorted out or worse. The moment he gets to us he says “Hey guys did you guys see the show?” We are both shocked he wasn’t angry by us being there. We proceeded to talk about the show and his gear for a few minutes and then took a few pics and went on our way. Just goes to show how great of a guy PG is. I’m sure any other rock star would have had our asses kicked and thrown out.

Paul Gilbert was the most influential person in my guitar technical progression back in the day. I had his videos Intense Rock I and Intense Rock 2. He made learning and playing difficult things humorous and fun and that was key for me. Thanks Paul!

Oh he's had hearing problems for a loong time, I think I read that's why he used to wear those big ear muffs on stage to protect his hearing. I doubt he'll be losing it completely any time soon :)

I owe to Paul Gilber the ability of starting to pick up English words by ear watching his instructional videos back in the day. Instead of focusing on the licks I would focus on the language and look on the dictionary certains words that I couldn't understand by ear. He speaks very clearly, at a slower pace and without an accent. So thanks, Paul.

My take away... There is no right and wrong. Good is good. Everyone is unique. You can make great music at any stage of your skill level. There’s something to appreciate everywhere. Just play, just make music. It’s ok if you aren’t a shred person, keep trying, but be yourself. Sometimes less is more. I love this man.

Paul Gilbert is at the top of my list as the most talented guitar player ever and he is the one professional musician that I'd wish to get taught by. The dudes knowledge on music and songs is other worldly , dude might just be an alien lol

He was born at one of luckiest times to grow up with music. He’s old enough to remember the Beatles when they were still a band. He was about 5 to 8 when 70’s Bubble gum/glam (Raspberries/Sweet/T-Rex & Alice Cooper, Bowie) ruled the rock airwaves. He was about 10 going into a being young teenager when 70’s hard rockers like Zeppelin, Aerosmith Sabbath & KISS were giving way to new super skilled rock bands like Boston, UFO & Van Halen. He got a full ear of Punk and New Wave and then the rebirth of British metal with a renewed Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Scorpions & Judas Priest. Which then of course introduced new rockers like Iron Maiden, Dio, Ozzy, Def Leppard. Loudness and Anthem in Japan. And in the US, bands like Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Dokken, WASP, Armored Saint, Black and Blue, and Lizzy Borden… And of course Paul’s Racer X. Every time you hear Paul Gilbert’s interviews and playing, what your hearing is his distilling of all his growing years of listening to hard rock and 70’s AM pop. I’m from Paul’s era. I grew up in L.A. worked at shows when he was with Willie in Black Sheep m, right up to the Racer X show at the Country Club when they essentially co- headlined with Anthem from Japan. We even opened for Racer X early in their club days having no idea who they were or what their significance to hard rock would be some 30 years later. Every time Paul does an interview, I can’t wait to watch it because it always leaves a big smile on my face and many good memories about growing up in the same era that he did, and of all the music that has worked its way into my memory banks, down into my heart and then back out thru my fingers. This was one more of those moment’s.

The saddest thing is Paul took so much better care of his hearing than most rockstars. He was pretty religious about using protective hearing gear as early as his late 20s to early 30s. Sadly I think he knew this was coming his entire career.

I love Paul Gilbert. He is my favorite guitar player. Not because of his speed, which is pretty quick even by today's standards. Not because of his technical mastery, which is insane. But, because he has such incredible joy when he plays. He nearly glows with childlike glee when he is playing. I may never master my instrument the way he has, but I always want my playing to contain that kind of joy.

Genuinely one of my favourite interviews with Paul Tyler, was lucky to do a masterclass with Paul about 10 years ago in Dublin before his show with 4 other guitarists, back then two things stood out about his playing, melody & rhythm based even in the solos he was conscious of tying it in with the groove of the tune. Plus he's always been super humble & great sense of humour too. Made everyone feel at ease.

I saw Mr. Big open up for Rush in Baltimore in 1990. I wasn't a fan until I saw them live. Paul did his solo (drill included) and he blew me away! Been a fan ever since.

It's pretty heartbreaking that it's the primary reason behind a change in his playing style, especially since he fought to keep it a lot harder than most musicians. He obviously knew it was already starting to happen as early as his late 20s to early 30s and started religiously wearing protective hearing gear.

His positive energy is like inspirational fuel. Great guy - especially in later years. I never liked the technical shreddy stuff earlier on - I did realize he was brilliant, but it didn't mean anything to me. What he does now does mean something. Maybe it is just because I don't have the processing speed for the fast stuff, I don't know, but that's how I feel about it.
