Firstly, the Tendulkar-Bradman comparison is ridiculous, even my cricket-mad Indian friend says so. Second, I've been a fan of Paul Kelly for 20+ years. Third, the first time I ever heard this son (and saw the video) I was visiting my darling Grandmother (RIP) who was a massive Bradman fan in the '30s. The song always reminds me of her, and often makes me cry. Thanks for bringing me up, Dot. I love you.

This is a great song overlayed on footage of the legendary Sir Donald Bradman. For those who are not Cricket fans, Sir Don is to Cricket what Babe Ruth is to Baseball. He had a long career for Australia retiring in 1948 from international competition. The Australian national team is the winning-est team in international Cricket. A great tribute to this great man. Three cheers for Sir Don.

+Shivanand Kumar Good catch. In fact all Bradman´s cut shots look effortless - he middled the ball no matter where it was pitched. Never saw a batsman score so easily off a yorker outside off stump. His leg glances were equally delicate - a very hard shot to play, most modern batsman miss or edge more often than they properly connect on it. Yet those were not even his favourite shots - the pull was, even without a helmet.

Nice one. Wonderful. Best Bradman story? He was (probably) asked once what he would average against today's bowlers. By 'today' I mean the early 1980s, when the question was (allegedly) asked. You know, the days of the West Indian superfast quartet etc. Well, Bradman answered confidently that he thought he'd probably manage an average of about 60. The surprised interrogator, sensing a scoop, asked why. And Bradman said "Well, son, I am nearly 80!" Legend.

Just to answer your original question as well, the bowling averages from 1928 to 1948 were comparable to now also. Bert Ironmonger topped the charts at 17.97, and then there were several bowlers averaging between 22 and 24. Nowadays, with more teams playing, Vernon Philander tops the charts with 17.13, then Curtly Ambrose with 19.88, but again the majority of the best bowlers of our time average between 22 and 24 (many of them boosted by many tests against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Not much more to say about Sir Donald - he really is the best batsman the world has ever seen. That said, Harold Larwood was and is possibly the greatest fast bowler of his and any other day - anyone who could curb Bradman, bodyline notwithstanding, had to be good - really good. Let's give some credit to Harold.

@widlad7 Most of these players learnt their cricket in England! In the recent team i don't include Strauss as he moved to England when he was 4 and as for Lamb it was the era of apartheid and they had to play for someone.The Dominican rep is hardly a cricket hotbed along with Zambia,did any of these players mentioned play for other countries? I don't think so unlike Morgan who played for Eire and Pietersen who played for South African u/19s,Trott and Prior both SA born and bred
@OldBertie11 жыл бұрын
Let me just jump in here.To determine the quality of bowling in Bradman's time, let's see how other batsmen of this time compare. During Bradman's playing days, he averaged 99.94. The second-highest batting average during this time, with 20 matches played, was George Headley's 65.78, meaning Bradman averaged more than 50% higher than any other batsman who had access to the same bowling he did. By comparison, during Tendulkar's playing days, he averages 3rd-highest behind Sangakkara and Kallis.
you get the feeling we need to teach our kids to harden up

By the way, they didnt wear helmets. so what would you rather face. akhtar at 150 with a helmet or Larwood at 140 with no helmet and 5 or 6 feilders around the bat. and one last stat. bradman played 50 odd tests. scored 27 hundreds and 12 double hundreds. was truly the best

@rajushah66 Tendulkar is the best of the flat track bullies (and he still only averages 55). Bradman scored his runs against great spinners and fast bowlers alike on uncoverered wickets more freely than Tendulkar ever did or will in easier conditions. As far as I'm concerned, that makes Bradman not twice as good as Tendulkar (the difference between the averages) but four times as goodr. He not only blew Tendulkar's century rate away, he did it on wet and green surfaces. Four times better!
