Paul Kelly did a lot work for the underprivileged so he was asked to write a song for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal in the 1990’s. Instead of writing a traditional Christmas song about families coming together, Kelly tells the story of a family split apart. Rather than writing about joy and thanksgiving he tells the story of a fallen man's regret, loneliness and fear. It's really a story of a 'sinful' man seeking redemption, forgiveness and love which is the real meaning of Christmas.

You know, in America you have this singer songwriter that is America's equivalent to Paul Kelly. I think his name is Bob Dylan. In all seriousness, Paul Kelly is a master craftsman when it comes to putting words together. As an Australian, and I think a lot of Australians would agree, he writes and sings about Australia. His words are so relatable, as if to give a voice to Australia. Yes his voice is not one of the best, but there comes a point where( in my opinion) the message of the song supercedes the voice. And for me after a while, his voice actually sounds pretty good and fits well with his style of music.

There's nothing wrong with his voice, his voice is perfect for his music. There is nobody else in the world that could do justice to this song vocally anywhere near as good as Paul Kelly. Decades ago I once heard somebody during an open mike media interview session with Cat Stevens criticise the quality of his vocals while addressing him. He too could not have been more wrong.

Hi guys, a Kiwi here viewing your show for the first time. Down here in Australasia making gravy is slang for making lots of money, so that's why the song ends with "pay im all back". That's the other message, his regret, remorse, and determination to pay reparation.

Paul is brilliant and this song has now become a classic all year round but especially had greater meaning the last 2 years as we all suffered world wide not having loved ones for Christmas so TY again guys this year we will be making gravy and hugging our loved ones so badly missed for 2 years. Sending Love and hugs to you both and your loved ones for Christmas and may 2023 be a fresh new year for all. I recommend watching the re-release of Gravy the 2021 version where fans of Pauls from all over the world suffering in lockdown sent in videos of them singing this, it gave new life to the song elevating it to another level as we all ended up being Joe missing home and loved ones. I really hope to experience this awesome track in front of a Cell Block that has 136 years of incarceration in its history... for all the convicts and prisoners who 'stood in line' on Christmas day waiting for their meal. I think the 'gravy' is also a metaphor for doing well in life, he's going to try to pay his loved ones back for messing up. PK is the greatest storyteller, you need to hear more of his stuff. I was thinking about this one again, and we can joke that we’ve got a heritage that’s steeped in convict culture, but there’s another fantastic Aussie song based around a character dealing with life in jail. Four Walls by Cold Chisel is a fantastic short and sharp song about life in a jail. It doesn’t go into much detail, but paints a desolate, soul-destroying picture in just a few stanzas. Barnesy delivers a perfect vocal for the mood of the song, once again an excellent conduit for Don Walker’s superb songwriting. Bands such as Cold Chisel and Divinyls did shows inside jails occasionally, which may have prompted Walker’s ideas on this song.

I've never been to gaol (or if you are American, jail), but I knew someone who did something silly, and missed his son's first birthday. So yeah, this song plays with the heart strings in a totally unexpected way. Paul is a poet who managed to put some of his songs to music, and done an absolute great job at it. This song really had a revival in Australia in 2020 because many people were unable to travel to be with their families at Christmas. I had heard it but never really listened to it before then, but since taking the moment to really listen, it makes me emotional every time I hear it. Those beautifully relatable lyrics, and that electric guitar that somehow sounds mournful, nostalgic and hopeful all at the same time. 'Dumb Things' is great, and if you want to see more Paul Kelly, 'To Her Door' is one of his biggest hits, with the same kind of down to earth storytelling that hits you right in the feels.

It’s nice you guys did this. A little Christmas present to all your Australian fans. Interesting you brought up Covid, because last year Paul Kelly released a video collage of fans who sent in a a video of themselves giving their families messages for Christmas while they were away from them, either locked out of the country because of Covid rules or some who’s Dad or son or husband passed away. Basically, it’s a song that has elements of a usual boring family Christmas, nothing special but we miss it when we can’t be there. A typically Australian understatement - both the song itself and the story it tells. Thanks guys.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the true Australian Christmas Carol. From ANOTHER Adelaide boy, Paul Kelly. "This time, we didnt forget the gravy" (cartoon quote) Thats not even his "real" band, thats a mixed band of our good live and session musos, the base of the "Rockwiz" Television Show "in-house" band.

I often wonder if this song resonates with Aussies so much because of our isolation from the rest of the world. We all miss someone.. maybe it's a nod to our convict past.. don't know, but a beautifully crafted song ...

Happy gravy day. A testiment to PK's writing skill. Heaps of comments from around the world who love it after hearing it for the first time. Australian but global. Totally agree with TTM watching the version made from clips from around the world. The song is decades old but the pandemic elevated it in everyone's minds because EVERYONE had a story about being separated at Christmas. Definitely watch more PK

Paul Kelly, Australia's Poet Laureate in the mold of Springsteen or Bragg or Cohen. Storyteller and holder of a mirror up to society. For a heartbreaker, try "Deeper Water." For a sense of finding home in a new place, try "From St Kilda to King's Cross." For an ode to Aussie sporting legends, try "Leaps & Bounds." And for gritty storytelling "Darling It Hurts." Vast catalogue.

I haven’t seen my Son on Christmas Day for 6 years (after separation from my ex-wife), and this won’t be any different. But he is coming on Boxing Day for a couple of days, and I’m so happy. Christmas has always been a big deal to my family, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I went from all the hoopla to just me in a small bedroom. Treasure each moment guys, I hope everyone has a great Christmas.

The time he’s spent with his Dad will be one of his greatest treasures. Boys especially, really need their Dads and they need them more and more as they grow. It’s how they learn to be good men. I couldn’t be prouder of my husband and sons. Good, strong, loving, kind men. I’m sure your boy will be the same because he has a dad who cares. Wishing you the merriest Christmas, Sheamus xxx

You are in rarified air here. Paul Kelly is Australia's modern poet laureate and, arguably, Australia's best modern songwriter. Alex, I loved the way you captured the essence of the song and reduced it down, like a good base stock, to the core elements: family, regret, promises, mistrust and of course the central role that food (gravy) plays in bringing loved ones together and helping to put divisions aside, even if just for one day. I am impressed by your rapid understanding of the lyrics because you expressed them better than I ever could (don't tell anyone I said that, I will deny it). Thank whichever God you subscribe to that the Christmas carol that Kelly wanted to record for the album had already been taken. That led to the writing of a Christmas song to rival "The Fairytale of New York". Very different songs but both amazing pieces of writing. Thanks to the whole team for bringing us this gem.

More Paul Kelly please!! As you mentioned, Dumb Things, Bradman, Everything's Turning To White, Deeper Water, From Little Things Big Things Grow, hell, do the entire collection!! Nearly every song is fantastic!! I always loved music, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Crowded House, Dire Straits, but it was Paul Kelly who inspired me to go and learn guitar!! He's a true Aussie legend, with a catalogue of songs that I believe is unrivaled in Australia, and rarely rivalled around the world!! Also worth checking out the Neil Finn/Paul Kelly concert!!
