Great song and a real throw back to the real Australia of the 1980s. "The Buttery" is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Binna Burra, northern NSW that is still operating as of 2019. "Olympic" was an interstate coach line that ran until around 1980, a later version of the song changed the wording to "McCafferty" which was an Australian coach line that formed in 1940 and begun operating interstate coach lines in December 1980 before being taken over by Greyhound Australia in 2004. "Silver Top" refers to the Silver Top Taxi Service, formed in 1936 in Sydney, NSW and still operating as of 2019 in both Sydney and Melbourne.

I'm from the UK and spent '87 & '88 in Australia. I remember heading out to work with Paul Kelly playing on the TV. Loved his work ever since. years later I went to see him in the Spiegel Tent in Edinburgh and, apart from my wife, I swear everyone else was Australian. It was like being at a religious service: everyone was gently singing along to all the lyrics to all the songs.

One of the few songs my very blokey, amazingly hardworking, empathetic and incredibly supportive 58 yr old recovering alcoholic father has always sung along to from the moment I remember it always coming on the radio from the 90’s to this day. It always made me elated to see my dad bust out soulfully singing because he is amazing at it but it only occurs purely in those moments. I always wondered why he sang it so passionately and I felt so happy… I would feel so proud to be his daughter every time he allowed himself to be so vulnerable like that. Now in 2024, over the last 5 or so years I’ve been through the ringer with DV, an unexpected pregnancy and a flare up of some severe mental health issues, and he has been there for me for every step of the way, so any time I hear it come on or hear him sing along, I am overwhelmed with the most intense emotional response that I instantly begin sobbing and become a blubbering mess. Every. Damn. Time. I struggled so hard becoming a single mum, hell; becoming a parent at all, and he will randomly tell me tidbits about my extremely stubborn and strong mum (who I’ve always butted heads with) and the beginning of us 4 kids’ being born (one kid every 2 years 😳), she was so excited to get into uni, about to start working more, but came into their bungalow crying, very upset and disheartened with the news she was pregnant with my oldest sibling. She wanted her life first. My dad was so confused because he was chuffed to be a dad. “I was elated, Maddy girl. I couldn’t understand why ya mum was crying” well bloody hell dad, I sure do. My dad was able to escape the hard reality of everyday life with alcohol and an enjoyable job he could drink at. This song tells their story almost word for word. It was time to shape up or ship out. He took her ultimatum and hasn’t had a drop of alcohol since circa 2006.

I hear you….. my wife left me for another man and took my two beautiful little girls. The marriage is lost but I got 50/50 custody of my little angels…… I would die for those kids and am thankful to be in their life…. I will give anything for them 🥹

We studied Paul Kelly in high school in English Literature. He is such a formidable storyteller that his lyrics read like poetry. This song in particular is incredibly poignant. It is not just about one family - it is about an entire culture that's in crisis. Those final lyrics out, "he was shaking in his seat, riding through the streets", the anxiety and dread is so palpable.
