This had the wildest finish of any major championship ever played.

One of the greatest Open Championships of all time and arguably the most exciting finish in major championship history.

The artful commentary on these R&A highlight films recaps is sorely missed, I have had both the 1999 and 2000 editions on VHS since they came out and both are utterly brilliant

At 41:50 is perhaps my favorite line in any sporting media, both for its artfulness and cheekiness: “Now surely it was the time to wedge the ball back to the sanctuary of the fairway, but that has never been the French way: safety first is almost sacrilege for those of Gallic temperament.” Another classic at 42:52, “with the neurons apparently misfiring, the humor from here was all gallows, or more appropriately: guillotine”

Amazing to see this final round again. And Paul was a true champion. Well done. 😊😊😊

What a quote at the end. "There's some worse things in life, you know. I read the newspaper, like you all did, this morning and some terrible things are happening to other people." I had no idea he made the playoff. I don't even remember there being a playoff. What he did was both equal parts brainless, and heroic.

What an incredible way to close out The Open. What's your favourite Open from the last century?

1998 had so many storylines. Mark O'Meara peaking at 41, Rose putting up the best amateur performance imaginable, Tiger charging up the board proving he can handle links golf, Jesper's last crack at a major, and the rando Brian Watts having a glorious moment in the Sun.

That’s why they dispelled any armchair correctors such as yourself by saying “the last open of the 1900s”, listen to it again…

You play to win the game. Van De Velde never agreed with that sentiment. He only needed a 6. Not a 5 or a 4 or a 3. He played it as though he needed a 3. That's just stupid.

Van de Velde was robbed by the R&A. He should have gotten a drop after his second shot went into the stands.

Didnt go in the stands, it bounced off the front of the stands

He shouldn't have hit his shot into the stands in the first place
