We recorded this session several years ago and I haven't looked at the comments...until now. It is amazing to me how many hardcore haters there are out there. Here's the back story. I knew that I would be recording the session but I walked out into the studio and with zero seconds of notice , I was given a lavalier mic and they started the camera rolling. Someone else had started the set up , so I wasn't familiar with what they had put on the toms. To be honest, I've never used those mics but it didn't matter to me because I can make most anything sound good..me and about 50,000 other engineers in the country. That's what we do...that's the gig. At that point , it didn't matter what the mic was, and as large a kit as Paul plays, they were easy to get in on the toms.I haven't used those mics since, but it's always fun to try something different, and they sounded fine. Also the 67-87 confusion was because there are several U-67s in town that have been modified with the smaller 5 pin plugs and I wasn't sure which these were. I didn't realize that I was going to have to give a dissertation with no warning. Back to the haters, it's amazing to me that when I did Google search their names, I found that they are invisible on the internet...zero information about them. I guess that unlike everyone else in the video, who have been making hit records, playing on hit records,recording and mixing hit records most every day for 20 or 30 years, they have just been sitting in their bedroom with a laptop...hating. Funny actually. Ed Seay

Great Vid. Im a grammy winning engineer. They have no idea what the gig is. They wait for the celebrities to show up and get mad when they don't. Keep up the good work

Sir, have you used audix mics on the drums in the studio, & if so did you like them from your experience producing?

Ed, I recognize that it has been a while since this video was made, but do you recall who the other players were on keys, bass etc.?

I understand 100% using the blanket to isolate the bass drum mic from the cymbals and the other drums - it’s the opposite, however, that I don’t understand at all (isolating the bass drum to prevent it from leaking into the OH mics). Wouldn’t that really defeat the purpose of overheads - to capture the ENTIRE drum set, bass drum included???
@andyprice954311 ай бұрын
The overheads are used more to capture the cymbal sounds.
@ZacharyRedFulton11 ай бұрын
@@andyprice9543 Correct. But then, they’re still eventually going to capture all the other drums (particularly snare and toms), and trying to isolate THEM from the overhead mics would be a hassle unless you can afford to close mic EVERY part of the drum kit. It also depends on what kind of overhead techniques you’re using (XY, Blumlein, spaced pair, Recorderman, etc.).

Those don't look like shure mics on the toms I'm pretty sure those are Audio-Technica ATM35's I've used them myself they sound great but honestly the clips are even worse than the 421's they come lose constantly.

Those are Audiotechnica...not Shure

Ed the Mad Scientist cannot tell the difference between an audio-technica ATM350CW & a Shure Beta 98. What a pro!!!! Vic Firth should remove or edit this video out of total embarrassment.

A pro's pro would have looked at what was on the kit before filming....

+AudioWonderland So this guy that has done this for 35 years at the highest level is not a pro? Really dumb statement .
@AudioWonderland8 жыл бұрын
Irrelevant. He doesn't have 35 minutes of experience as on screen talent and it shows. He of all people should know the importance of prep and should have taken the time to know what the hell he was talking about before they rolled camera.

@@AudioWonderland Oh, yeah. Those three unwatched videos on your channel really lend you significant credibility to critique people we’ve actually heard of.
