Yes, I did enjoy it. Checkout the covers by Weezer, also Careless Whisper by Seether and Easy by Faith No More. Some songs have been covered many times and have a few strong but different versions. It might be interesting for you to do one of those and compare multiple versions. One that comes to mind is Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics covered by Marylin Manson, Weezer and others. Another good one might be the Beatles - Come Together covered by Aerosmith. Similar, both good, but enough differences to make it interesting for you to choose. And speaking of Aerosmith covers, try Remember (Walking in the Sand) original by the Shangri-las. 2 Judas Priest covers Green Manilishi - Fleetwood Mac and Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez and speaking of Joan Baez how about Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You covered by Zeppelin. That should keep you busy, not to mention highly entertained. I’m really looking forward to it.

Some of the songs I mentioned are ones where I heard the cover versions first and loved them and learned about the original versions later. It’s interesting that these “heavier” bands drew inspiration from the acoustic, singer-songwriter folk songs. But what is also great and apparent is that a great piece of art, great writing stands up no matter what and a great artist can interpret and transform it into a completely different style and it can still be great and move the listener emotionally.

I absolutely love this idea of comparing versions of songs! On this one, although I love Axl, I have to go with the original Paul McCartney & Wings. Paul McCartney is a musical genius and the sounds incorporated in the original is just so intriguing! I remember my first time hearing this song on the radio; I was blown away and even more so through headphones once I bought the album. Looking forward to future comparisons.

Hmm. This actually surprised me. I'm very familiar with both versions. I went into this thinking that GnR would be my favorite version. HUGE GnR fan. I've never been the biggest Beatles (and the individuals) fan. Not saying I don't like them, but I never appreciated them very much when I was younger. I definitely do now. However I think I actually like Paul's version a TINY bit better!!!!! Maybe it's because you played it first? I don't know. I think I hadn't really thought about the fact that Paul's version is pretty hard too. So, thank you for doing them "side by side". It made me think more than usual about the song. Nice reactions. I really like that you break down the songs and see what they're about and make sure you have the lyrics so you're not guessing here and there what they're trying to say or the meaning about it etc. One of the most irritating things about some reaction channels is watching people try to figure it out and then having no clue what the song is about or even getting it. Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through by Jim Steinman VS Meatloaf. Steinman originally wrote the song for Meatloaf but he didn't do it at the time so Steinman decided to record it himself. Thirteen years later, Meatloaf finally decided to record his own version of it. I'm really curious to see which version you'd prefer, I love them both.

If you're going to check out live versions, may I suggest the one from the Wings concert film Rock Show. You mentioned Let's Spend the Night Together by The Stones and Bowie... Great choice. Here are a few more... Better than either of these versions is when Paul McCartney does it live. Lots of fireworks, bombast and over-the-topness. The fireworks are used like another percussion instrument, which adds balls.

I've never been able to pick a favorite. They both have different parts that balance out. McCartney's vocals, per usual, are amazing. GnR took it and added a more modern sound at the time. I have both on my playlist. It's impossible to me.

Personally, I *love* the orchestra-going-bonkers thing of the original in this case, so Wings takes it for me. Although GnR making it more of a singalong stadium rock thing totally works. There have been some great Bond themes over the years. I'm particularly fond of Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name"- give that a try sometime. ;) As far as comparing originals to cover versions like this, I don't see any hard & fast formula.... if you're feeling something in particular, pause & talk about it. We'll know which ones are catching your ear more by the fact those will be longer than others! :)

In my mind the original of any legendary epic classic the original will almost always have the edge, especially when it was written and composed by that original artist. Hendrix’s version of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower being an exception for me. Also, like Manfred Mann’s version of Blinded by the Light better. Anyway, back to this, I also think it’s great the level of contrast and “heaviness,” “dramatic epicness” the original is able to create with the orchestra even without super loud, heavily distorted guitars. Just killer composition and orchestration mastery by Paul and his “blissful” voice only adds to the contrast between the 2 parts of the song. Nothing against G’n’R, it was a decent cover. Generally a band covers a song to pay homage and respect the original song and artist and maybe add their own little spin or personality to it and I think they did that, but no way is it better. That said if either version comes on I’m listening to it, not turning it off. Great, classic song from McCartney.

I did put some others I thought of in another comment. Even though I may actually prefer a cover version better, still a cover would never be possible without the original. It nice when someone can improve upon something already great and make it even better or just as good but in a different way.

You should see when Paul does this in concert, he does it every concert he has ever done. During the instrumental part, there are flash pots going off in front of the stage and behind the band, laser beams everywhere and if it is in an outdoor venue they also set off fireworks behind the stadium... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIPUl6GPhbSii5o and when the song finishes, like it does on this recorded version, they set off a huge BANG with smoke, Paul has to cover his ears. It's always the highlight of his live shows.. I don't care for Axel Rose's voice, it just seems very "wobbly" to me. For me, it is hard to listen to.

Good idea to do this comparative review. In this case I would give Paul McC version extra points for originality and the high contrast between the slow parts and the faster parts of his version. I still love GnR cover though because it is heavier and Axl has a voice to carry it wonderfully. Adding to your suggestion list of ‘VS’: ‘Easy’ by The Commodores and then Faith No More’s version.
