I'm glad to hear Paul speaking about Darren's departure as sad as it is. As a fan, I'd just like to have some closure. You could tell that it was very hard for Paul to talk about. After watching this, I went searching to hear Darren's side of things, and finally found a thread on Reddit that links to the "Your Favorite Band Podcast" which did an hour-long interview with Darren just this week (Jan 15th) where he briefly addressed leaving MuteMath. I'm summarizing and reading between the lines here, but it sounded like Darren had lost his fire for MuteMath a few years ago (some time after Odd Soul it seems) and had been wanting to leave for awhile, even if he'd never voiced that desire to his bandmates. At its core, the issue doesn't seem to be related to artistic differences, but the pull of Darren's personal life and issues involving balancing his family with the band. He still played vague with the details, but he heavily implied that MuteMath was putting pressure on his marriage. Darren mentioned something about how his wife made sacrifices to her life and her own career to support him in MuteMath and that Darren was kicking the can down the road waiting for "that moment" where MuteMath would make all their sacrifices worth it. He did indicate that he and Paul aren't speaking but he still wishes nothing but success for the band going forward. He also said that he was glad that he left and wishes he'd done so sooner and timed his departure better. If I had to guess, Darren quit the band because he felt like he needed to be a better husband. I'd also guess that desire to be a better husband includes a dream he and his wife share of creating their own music together - something that would always take a backseat as long as he was "married" to MuteMath. I don't think his departure alone would be enough to destroy a decades long friendship with Paul, but the manner in which he left MuteMath (very abruptly and right before a huge tour) probably led to some heated exchanges between Paul and Darren and also probably led to some money arguments because of Darren not fulfilling his duties to tour in support of of the Play Dead album. I think this is why they aren't speaking. I can see both sides of it. I'd be pissed if I were in Paul's shoes because the manner in which Darren left was kind of a dick move. But at the same time, I understand and respect that Darren is putting his money where his mouth is and is making sacrifices for the betterment of his marriage. The whole thing just sucks.

Been listening to Sucré but unfortunately don’t find it THAT good, I mean they have some pretty nice music going on but that’s not Mutemath, honestly.

If only bands like MuteMath still made boatloads of money in this day and age. Truth is, most bands don't. Bands these days survive by having day jobs, and endorsing and selling their signature gear. Gone were the days where you just toured and your single gets radio play and the family back at home won't be as stressed with the money you make off of living the dream. I guarantee if music was as lucrative like it was 2 decades ago, the decision to stay in a band would be much easier.

Thank you for your explanation and point of view. I definitely support Paul in this issue - honestly how many bands broke up because of family life? Thousands of them. Paul does have a wife and a daughter too, yet he still knows music/Mutemath is his destiny. I pray they found a way to restore the relationship again with Darren, they can't be succesful enough without each other imo.

@@HannahMojave, exactly. I don't see why there needed to be a complete break-up of the band. Why not take a hiatus like so many other bands do? If you're Darren, you say, "Hey Paul, after this next tour, I need a break man. If we keep going at this pace with all the touring and stuff this is going to destroy my marriage and my family." IMO, it all comes down to poor communication. And honestly, as much as I love Darren as a drummer, I kind of put this on him. He clearly was having these thoughts for awhile and he never voiced them to his bandmates.

What if they start collaborating on producing tracks just the two of them and decide to start performing those tracks live, and then they bring on two other musicians and take the band on tour, and then they call the band something like Deaf English, or Lame History?

But it's kinda sad, at this point Paul is the only remaining original member. Darren left, Paul stopped touring, and their original guitarist left a few years ago! it sucks. I really enjoyed seeing them live 3 times, and Darren is special. Hope he continues to make music

I will never forget when I was 16 years old, the Reset E.P came out. I went and saw them on Warped Tour of all things. My jaw dropped at the set from start to finish. So profound and beautiful, all the guys were incredible. Knowing Paul is the only one left breaks my heart because now those shows are only in my memories.

Darren has always been one of my favorite drummers and from what I've seen in interviews, live chats, etc. he's a super kind guy who loves his fans. That's what makes this situation even more perplexing to me. He hasn't acknowledged his fans at all and hasn't said a word about it. People had spent money on tickets for this tour in part to see him and I feel like he left them out to dry (with zero explanation). It's hard to blame Paul since he was evidently as blindsided as anyone else. Honestly, what would help put this to bed so that people can move on is Darren releasing some sort of statement acknowledging his fans. I'm still pumped for the new album though and from what I've seen, Hutch is doing a fantastic job!

guys I think DK left due to financial issues/business...A few of my friends said maybe they didn't see eye to eye anymore musically but I highly doubt that. Another thing people were saying was it was because of his family and that I also doubt. When roy left he was very specific regarding leaving MM due to family. On a side note: for those of you with instagram you will notice on DK's "following" list he totally unfollowed Paul Meany and unfollowed MM. THis is evidence that there was definitely hard feelings. I also follow DK's wife on Instagram and she unfollowed Paul as well. On a weirder note even Roy unfollowed Paul. I really wonder whats up.

Great interview. Darren's departure stung like hell, and watching this provided me some therapy, as well as the need to get some things out. To Paul's credit, he's done about as much as he can over the past month to remain professional, praising Darren's work in his statement, referring to his role as "big shoes" and respecting his privacy. My gut feeling is this was a very messy breakup that left deep wounds on both sides, given how they've glossed over it. I've followed the band since before the beginning, and Paul and Darren were the creative core of MM from the start when they were e-mailing and layering demos back and forth in 2002. When two people have spent thousands of hours shut in rooms pouring blood, sweat and tears into their art, the effect of time, stress and artistic sensitivity often causes those relationships to erode and break apart... Mutemath may very well move forward as "Paul and co.", but right now it looks 50/50. Listening to Play Dead today in this context is a whole different experience, and makes me appreciate the current fragility of this band. I can't wait to take in the Play Dead show in Boston, especially if it's the last time around.

Saw them 2 nights ago here in Orlando. Hutch was fine, you could clearly see how impressed Paul was. Hugged him at least 2 or 3 times during the show. Was still a great performance. I saw MuteMath a LONG time ago and was even fortunate enough to see Paul in Earthsuit, and this show with Hutch was just as energetic as anything else. MuteMath is one of the best live bands out there right now.

Darren & Stacy are still on good terms with Todd & Wife (they babysat Lola a few days ago), so if there's bad blood between Darren & Paul it's not enough to leak into the rest of the band. Also, Paul made it clear the split blindsided him so I don't know how much tension could have led up to it.

All I can say is I hope they continue to feel like they wanna make music and tour because the music is so incredible, unique and satisfying on so many levels. Truly a one of a kind band. Somehow it's been a little cathartic to me listening to Paul talk about how he dealt with the news himself. When I stumbled into Mutemath, Paul's musical richness coupled with Darren's rhythmic richness together made Mutemath into my all time favorite band, that I listen to nearly everyday (multiple times). Of course, like a lot of people I've dealt with the announcement as if a part of my arm was ripped off - the fact that I'm a drummer makes it all the more painful to watch Mutemath lose Darren, but they've been a great band over the past decade with some of the best music I've heard. I hope Darren does well wherever he is, and I hope Paul continues to rock as I know he will!

I think Darren and Roy left the band because they didn't like the direction it was going. This is just my opinion. But think about it. They started as an alternative rock band and have turned into a very electronic band. They always have used synthesizers but not to the level they are now. Listen to the new songs and the last album, Darren has had to tone it down a lot and so did Roy. I personally believe they played their best on the Odd Soul album. That is the road they should have taken. They still have great music and i'll always love what they have done but it's become too electronic to keep those talented guys doing simple rhythms and simple bass lines. I wish they could have gone back to the basics of what mutemath is.

Sam Tharp maybe Darren left because of it but Roy left and released a statement saying it was hard for him to tour and be a father to his kids so he left to be with his family but I wish I knew why DK left but I feel like what you said about the direction they went is why he left

Their live show has always been an "unchained" version of their studio album, so the speculation of falling out based on their progression of sound is BS. Darren was also a major contributor to creating the songs, especially the synth parts, so that doesn't make sense either.

Darren King loves electronic and hip hop-esque beats. I doubt it was the direction of the band. Plus, he's put out on Twitter that he can't wait to play these songs live so...speculation is fine but I think it's deeper than just the direction of the band.

Dk was all for vitals in an interview online he revealed that he was the one that wanted to sound to evolve...I really don't think it was because of the music. I personally think it was because of money/royalties or the business end of things. On another note if you follow DK on instagram look at his followings list and try to find Paul Meany and MM...You wont find them because he unfollowed them this is prof that there was definitely hard feelings involved. I think they all see eye to eye musically. It was mainly about money for sure.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I respectfully disagree. Where MuteMath started (their self-titled album) was entirely written completely by Paul - there were no contributions by Roy or Darren. Their second album, that was tossed, was written along with Roy, Darren, Greg, and Paul. Greg left over it (but no one missed him because he really didn't contribute much). THIS album - Play Dead - is closer to the contributions of all of the Mute Math as we know it since Armistice. The reality of why they left is simple - I really think that they both wanted to be more involved in their family. If you really are a big fan of MuteMath, you'll get that they are HEAVILY invested in their family. They mean as much to them as their music - Paul is fine with integrating his family life on the road. Roy didn't have that luxury (his kids didn't come on tour), and I think Darren, with the demands of his wife's career that he is trying to cultivate as well as being involved as a dad without being a "road dad", made a hasty decision that was best for him. He wanted to move on. But don't diminish the music - everything that they've come out with is unique and wonderful.

Met Darren twice. Once in Portland during their 1st album release tour. I want to say around 2007? Such a nice guy. Very humble. So unique. Things change and the band will change. It will be different but good just like when Greg left. I have confidence in the new drummer. Huge role!

Excellent but heartfelt interview! Yes MuteMath is different without the fantastic Darren King, and for whatever the reason(s) his departure was, I too will respect his decision as Paul did. MuteMath is an extremely talented band, and from what I've heard from Hutch's drumming filling (Darren's) "big shoes", I'm very impressed and have faith MuteMath will continue if as a band they really want to. I'm absolutely on fire by the Play Dead album, possibly my favourite of theirs. PLEASE DON'T STOP! Shame about DK, met the guy after a gig in Manchester UK after a gig the other year. Great person. Such a talented individual... I hope he will disclose why he's left he band once he's comfortable & ready to do so. Over the years I've loved Mutemath's music but as they've aged my interest has diminished due to their change in style (prefer their roots so much more). Now with DK leaving it really has me both worried yet disheartened furthermore. I wish Paul all the best though. Each to their own but I believe as a fan you don't follow something/someone blindly. If you don't like something you simply don't like it. It's not a crime. People come & go. If Paul decides to carry on then good on him - respect. He's an inspirational musician & I'm sure he'll pull through all this whatever happens. Perhaps even move onto another project.

Listened to the DK 'your favorite band' podcast interview and to be blunt , his explanation pissed me off. To see this band break apart (DK, Roy) was rough because they had a creativity and talent unlike anything, unlike any other band. Real damn shame. Saw PDL show in Raleigh and it was still good, but not the same. MM is no adolescent dream, to fans it is music that really lifts spirits and brings a sound that is truly unique. I hope Roy and DK can find a context to still offer their creativity to the world. Much thanks to Paul for keeping on. The fact that the PDL show was good so soon after the semi-breakup gives me hope for the future of MM.

Been with Mute Math since their self titled EP. With Darren’s departure, Mute Math will NEVER be the same. That doesn’t mean they still won’t be amazing, as usual, but will never be the same again

Mute math is my fav band and Darren is my fav drummer. Not the best drummer but my favorite. Personally it's hard for me to decide as well what to do. I don't mean anything to mutemath, but to me they are like family. I certainly won't hold any grudges I will still listen to new music and if Darren does something else I will follow them too. I think what will change is I no longer will want to see them live. However, I will wait till I see the new drummer, they might surprise me

If you are going to be in a band you have to go on the road and live a life of a nomad. If you are not right for it, it will be tough as all hell. It sounds awesome and it is awesome for the first few weeks but it can be a real drag and feel pointless after a while because on tour you work an hour or two a day. the rest is hanging out and travelling. A different city everynight, you dont really get to experience the city or people or make any meaningful relationships outside of the road crew. There are many awesome moments that make it worth it but being a touring band is uprooting yourself which most humans aren't comfortable with. You have to be a special person to handle it. Maybe DK has just had his fill?

Ya know, I saw them in Fort Worth, TX just a few months back, and something didn't seem right. They sounded great, but Paul looked as though he was doing a show after hearing someone died. DK seemed angry through the whole set. I hope the best for them both. Love the music.

Rafaela Oliveira Castro as an interviewer my job is to ask the questions that needs to be asked. It's up to Paul to answer or not. We had a great conversation and Paul was totally ok with the questions asked. :-) he didn't leave uncomfortable. That's your own opinion.
