The problem with the recent production of A Streetcar Named Desire was that Rebecca Freknall’s pared back production actually weekend the play rather than added to it. Tennessee Williams works better when the plays are embedded in society rather than in some isolated ‘acting box’

I was going to see it when I was in London in April 2023, but decided against it after I read about the minimalist/non-existent stage design. Maybe I'm boring, but I like classical design that lets you relate not just to characters but also the stage setting, to imagine them in real life - it helps the immersion. I ended up seeing Ghost Story 2:22 that night, and really liked. The ending blew me away, even though I had guessed it ten minutes before it arrived.
