Paul Newman races a Nissan

Paul Newman was one of the greatest actors of our time and he also liked to race cars. He also won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing.
From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, he drove for the Bob Sharp Racing team, racing mainly Datsuns (later rebranded as Nissans) in the Trans-Am Series. He became closely associated with the brand during the 1980s, even appearing in commercials for them. At the age of 70 years and 8 days, he became the oldest driver to be part of a winning team in a major sanctioned race, winning in his class at the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona. Among his last races were the Baja 1000 in 2004 and the 24 Hours of Daytona once again in 2005.

Little known/ forgotten fact: when Newman first started racing no one took him serious, ie, thinking it was a publicity stunt. It was only after beating the best in his class, winning his first SCCA championship in the Road Atlanta National "Run-Offs" at the wheel of a privately entered Triumph TR-250 (TR-6 to the rest of the world), and his Victory Lane summation "Screw the Oscars"; that people (including Datsun/Nissan) started taking him serious.

I camped at Road Atlanta all through the late 70's and 80's before the major track changes, got to see Paul Drive a number of times. Great driver and accessible to the fans. Have some great pics and memories of those days.

1:00 I watched him at the hairpin turn at the Pocono Raceway and it would backfire every time he downshifted for the turn. Newman won that race, and me and a friend were in the Merkur with him, as he was about to drive the Merkur around the track. Paul Newman told one of the race officials, "get some girls in here". Off we went, into the other Merkur, to go around the track, right behind the winner of the race. 😁
