Scott, After watching this I took your advice, and although I couldn't find the Single Coil model EG, I did find a nice used Natural color Tremonti , $300.00 at a guitar center. I sold my Gibson SG special to fund the purchase. This has got to be one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever owned. I never played the SG much, But I cant stop playing the Tremonti. I love the wraparound bridge setup. The Action is LOW and effortless to play. I never liked whammy bars anyway.

@mrgitarplayer1 AHHH, so YOU'RE the one that grabbed it for $499.00 plus $25.00 shipping off of Ebay! I was watching that one and was considering picking up that puppy. You now are the proud owner of the best guitar you'll ever own. You did fine and dandy on that guitar. I would pay 4 times that much for it simply because they honestly are that great of a guitar. You will honestly never play a guitar that will be more IN TUNE sounding all the way up and down the neck. CONGRATULATIONS!

@mrgitarplayer1 I hear you. I've had quite a few people buy up these SE EG models and they ask why they were discontinued so quickly. They were here and gone before anybody knew it. The main reason is simply because people think the last thing that the world needs is another Strat copy. Little do they realize just how far from ANY STRAT COPY these are. These just smoke any Strat on the market, foreign or USA made. So, a lot of people turned their backs on the greatest axe they'll never know.

Hi, yeah these are all 100% stock. I wouldn't change a thing on them. I love Lace pickups and have them in many of my guitars, but these stock pickups hold their own very well against the Lace. They would be most like the hot gold Laces if I were to compare the sound and response of them.

Dr. Groovy strikes again. I think it was about 5 years ago I first watched this video. My patience paid off today in the form of blue hardtail se eg for a price I was willing to play. It will pair nicely with my Conn ST-11 and other Groovy items. Thanks Scott!

My pleasure my friend. PRS just makes great guitars all around and you really can't go wrong with any of them. The Korean imports are great. They are far and above in quality to other countries quality control with the exception of Japan who still makes a great guitar after all these years.

I would chose this over a Tele any day. It will save your back, it plays and sounds better. Bending strings is WAAAAAAY easier with the scale length on these things. Just make sure to find one without the Whammy system on it. This is simply the best kept secret out there. I like this better than I do their American Made guitars. To stop making this guitar was way stupid. But at least I've got mine and I will never let go of them. So, that is just me.....but, these kill the Fenders.

For anyone considering this guitar: Scott is 100% correct on how well this guitar performs. I've had top of the line Fenders, Gretschs, Gibsons, etc, and kept selling them looking for one that had that sound and stayed in tune. This guitar is unbelievable. Just got mine on eBay for $325 plus shipping. Mine was modified in that it had a McCarty bridge pickup installed with a coil split switch. Obviously with that setup an aftermarket pickguard. One ding in it hardly noticeable. For those saying you can't find one, it took me over three months of checking every single day on eBay and two popped up right before Christmas. They are out there! Just a tip, save your search on eBay. It will send you an email every day or night with new search results for PRS SE EG's or you might just want to go with PRS EG as they might of forgot to put the SE in the description. I didn't know about that little trick till the tail end of my search which was again thanks to a Scott Grove video! I really hope more people get to experience these guitars as they are just incredible to play. Good luck with your searches and bidding!

My pleasure. I'm looking for a 513. PRS just makes some fine guitars, period. Easily one of the best companies out. It don't matter if you have a $25,000 model or a $500 one.....they have simply got their stuff together.

Thank you very much. I agree, these are smoking guitars at twice the price. I'll have to check out the new maple top, it sounds great. The new video is going to be fun and should be out in April, I have a few ahead of it, but I'm excited to do it. I've always been a fan of Jerry. Monster player.

If that's the sound you are looking for, go for it. I don't like them but some people that like that P bass sound do. They simply sound way too muddy for my tastes. I like the good clear sound instead of the "Mud Bass" as they are better known. But, if low end is all that you are concerned with without any mids or high end definition, then the Sting bass would give you that sound and that sound only. Best of luck my friend.

I hear you. I have tried the "Real" PRS guitars and I have not found one that I would give over ten bucks for. I like these much better than the American made ones. Yeah, it's been discontinued for a couple of years now and I'm not sure what kind of sound that you're looking for. But if it's a Fender type of sound......these blow any Fender out of the water that you will find and I've owned over 400 Fenders. This thing creams 'em all.

@Lover4Truth Thank you very much. You know, these are some of my only guitars that I've never had to open up to take a look under the hood. I can't imagine changing a thing about them, so I can't give you an answer on that one my friend. I do know that there is a Humbucker route in the bridge since they used the same body for the SSH version also, but that's as much as I know about it. Not sure how deep the routes are.

Thank you very much. These guitars are pure heaven. I honestly would play this over 90% of my guitars. They are honestly that good for me and my style. They are better than the American Fender stuff in my oppinion and they are simply a great axe. So cheap, so amazing and as I pointed out....so discontinued. At least there are some out there for us that will appreciat them and not fall for the el cheapo Epiphone and Squier route.

@themusic928 Everything that has 3 single coils in it....yes, I compare it to a Strat. Especially since a Strat is what all these guitars are based on. Makes sense to do so. The Strat is the best selling guitar of all time. It is the most copied guitar of all time and I buy guitars that are modeled after Strats for my personal collection. So, again, yes...I will compare everything to a Strat because it's a perfect frame of reference that people understand. Good enough?
@groovydjs

@hetfield2x4 Cool, yeah I've done my best to spread the word on these things and I'm hoarding a bunch of them up in order to drive the price up in 10 years. Then it's garage sale time. If you don't like yours, I'll gladly buy it from you!
@groovydjs
@groovydjs 14 жыл бұрын
That is true, and the key word is "Owned" I've gotten rid of most of them. I have about 10 now and they will thin out too as there are simply much better guitars out there that give you that Fender sound that the Fender company in it's current state just can't and won't give you. Even if you call the custom shop, they refuse to give you what you want. Fender is big time on my hate list these days. The older stuff, fine.....the Japanese stuff is still good though.

Sweet guitar. I know exactly what you mean about that bridge. To me. it's the best bridge ever made for a guitar. It has the best tone, sustain, and tuning stability of any bridge made to date. Plus it's very comfortable. Palm muting is really easy on the edge of your hand.
@groovydjs
@groovydjs 13 жыл бұрын
@smacman68 I'm not fond of the rosewood fretboards as they just collect so much dirt and grime, maple bolt on necks and fingerboards would be nice. Not choosing to use Ebony? The Orianthi SE has an Ebony fingerboard. They have a lot of left handed models too. They've been offering them for a long time. I checked out the Babicz bridges and the Chop 6 fixed bridge looks fairly cool.

@hetfield2x4 There you go. I just found one of these on Ebay again, but someone yanked the pickups out and threw some nasty Duncans in it. I always feel great when someone grabs one of these (non trem versions) and they come back all stoked about how much cooler it is than they thought possible. These are soooo, by far my favorite off the rack guitar out there.

I'm a country guy, so the more twang the better. So humbuckers and P-90's are out for me. I hate Telecasters too unless that third pickup is in the middle and that nasty neck pickup is swapped out for a real pickup. The PRS guitars are the best playing guitars around. Nothing plays like them, I just wish they offered something for us chicken pickers instead of only trying to meet the demands of blues players and rockers. Nothing stays as intonated as them either. Great built guitars.
@groovydjs
@groovydjs 13 жыл бұрын
@TheGishlullmoon I probably keep the pickup height up higher on these axes than I do any others. I keep them just low enought that when I'm doing palm muting, that the strings don't slap against the pickup pole pieces. Otherwise, I let them ride pretty high on these particular guitars.

@zaagaard Hello Allan, which model did you end up getting and does it also have single coil pickups? No real matter. The real trick is to keep the pickups further away from the strings than most people would. Everybody always puts the pickups real close to the strings, that isn't where they belong. Doing that just causes more magnetic drag on the strings and can actually cause them to sound out of tune and overdrive way to easily. Keep them the same height on both sides, just lower them.

@hetfield2x4 Super sweet my friend. I hope you will love it as much as I do. I honestly do like it more than any other off the rack guitar that I own. They (amazingly) are the the most IN TUNE sounding thing in the world. I have no idea why, but it's a magical axe. Keep me posted my friend.

@mrgitarplayer1 Oh yeah, the case is simply a very, very, very heavy duty gig bag that has the "SE" in huge letters on it. It's so thick that it's as good as any hardshell case. You can barely even fold the thing in half for storage. lol If ever you sell that or decide to do something CRAZY like change even one little screw on that thing, give me a shout first and let me buy it from you. lol Enjoy it. It weighs like 5 lbs. and is just AMAZING! It Kills all other guitars off the rack!

i would go that far. i love real prses. fallen for the brand because of santana. shows why i bought so many santana guitars. the eg is just very different from the rest. i dont know what kind of music you usually play but a eg could suit it better then any other guitar. if i were you i would try out the 503. kind of like the eg but with better wood and tunes and other harware. my top 3 prs guitar: 1: Santana 1 2: Hollowbody 2 with piezo 3: 513 the se eg comes in on a 5th place or so.

@hetfield2x4 100% You are so very correct about the Greco Strat (Especially those cool years). They smoke all the USA stuff. Same as the Fender Japan company was at the same time. Just pumping out the best that there will ever be. Ibanez and Greco (same compan....same factory) were putting out some of the best guitars of all time from the mid 70's through the early to mid 80's. The world is finally taking Greco seriouly. He's correct, those Greco Strats are fetching a small fortune now!

Scott: I bought one of these today; it's a white one with red tortoise pickguard and tremolo system (wishing it was a stop-tail, but just glad I snagged one for a decent price). I did notice that the bridge PUP was aftermarket....a Seymour Duncan 'Duckbucker.' I wanted an all original one, but this was the only one I could get at the price I paid. Have you any experience with the SD PUP mentioned? As always, I thank you!

my aunt works for PRS, so i have one that is similar. it is all black and it has paul reed smith's signature on it i'm not bragging though, because i am not a fan of this guitar. at least, not the one i have. mine has a humbucker at the bridge, and a tremelo bridge instead of a stop bar. it isn't horrible in regards to tuning (i just recently adjusted the intonation and it sounds better), but i don't really like the tone or the way it plays.
@groovydjs
@groovydjs 13 жыл бұрын
@grascfretal Yeah, I've had the ones with the trem and I sold them off right away. They just didn't have that magical ability of playing in tune in every position for whatever magical reason that the stop bar ones do. I know, it makes no sense at all, but.....it's the way it is. It's too odd. I've never used a Duncan that sounded good at all. I've tried all of them I think and I have no idea how they are in business. I just don't get it. lol I'd try to find a real pickup unless you like it.

@groovydjs I will never understand PRS. He refuses to use ebony fretboards. No more bolt on necks (which I think are superior to set necks) and no left handed guitars. Many say that glue kills tone and sustain. There is a new bridge out now, made by Babicz called the Full Contact Bridge. Look it up. Very cool. Basically there is no gap between the string and the body. The string sits on a cam, which pivots for action height and intonation. I am going to get one an try it out.

@prsguitars1678 Read it again my man, I have OWNED over 400 Fenders, I've had thousands of guitars. It's what I do for a living, so, going though a few hundred of any brand is no big feat. I find that the SE EG's are great country and blues guitars. No humbuckers, so....not much of a metal machine, but the clean and slightly overdriven tones are quite pleasing.

Scott , I must say you have me interested in one of these PRS 22 fret se eg guitars. I like their look. I must say that I like the Custom se model better as far as woodgrain. My question is do you think if I put a push pull pot so I can use humbucker as single coils, would it be a comparable axe to the "se eg" model in tonal quality in single coil mode?(It would have the same stop tail bridge.)

@groovydjs
@groovydjs 13 жыл бұрын
@hetfield2x4 You could try it. I've owned a ton of these guitars and all of them that didn't have the stop bar went up for sale right away. Everything that makes these guitar magically play in tune relys on it. I've kept the good ones and wouldn't part with them for the world. I love a great whammy too, but for some reason, with these guitars...throw a whammy on them and then they somehow become ALMOST worth the $300.00 you pay for them. I wish I could explain it better. But, I can't. lol

How do you feel about the newer se models? One caught my eye for a nice price and some buds recommend it but I honestly trust you more than them haha

If I purchase this guitar with a tremolo. Is it hard or even worth removing the Tremolo and ascetically placing in a stop piece.
@wmdolan1

BTW what is the most you would pay for one with a Trem if that is even ok to ask. sorry it its not and I wont ask again. Just a opinion price range if you feel OK saying so. I know your here to teach and inform not necessarily give specific advice. Again thank you friend. My main concern is I personally hate temolo and is it ascetically feasible to change it?

This one must be pretty rare now... having a hard time locating an SE EG w/ stoptail. There's quite a lot of the humbuckers, but not able to find any (ebay or cl) w/ SSS & stoptail.

Yeah, there are a couple on the Nasty Guitar Center site, for $250.00 each, but both have the whammy system. Same with the ones that are currently on eBay....except they are asking a couple hundred more. You'll see some come up a few times a month both places. Let me check a couple more places for you real quick.

@hetfield2x4 Yep, they sound a whole lot different and they don't have the perfect intonation like the stop bar versions do. Why? Who the hell knows, it's magic, but it's true. I've owned dozens of them and it's the same exact thing every single time.

Alright Scott. Love the reviews, lessons and your whole website! Scottish guitar player here with 500 quid to spend. You don't know where I can get one of these do you? Looks like the exact thing i need, been looking at the godin progression but this seems better. Just can't find one anywhere even though i've been checking ebay everyday. Any wisdom passed would be much appreciated buddy! cheers.

Hello I have one for sale in my area but it has a hairline crack on the headstock running from the top through the G,B, and E tuners is it worth it still. Other then that it’s in great condition for $150? If so how would you recommend fixing that?

@MrJaxreid No, I was correct. It kicks your butt. I am not someone who would ever let a guitar hit anything. I take care of my axes. It kicks your but because the amp is behind you, the levels are high, the speakers physically move air that is right behind your butt. So, you do the palm muting on an E chord with some heavy drive, the cones move like crazy and guess what? It KICKS YOUR BUTT. I WIN! lol

@disturbtheworlds Ebay is the only place I ever see them. They are 90% of the time, the ones with the horrible trem on it. The stop tailpiece versions like this are stupidly better than the trem models. It's amazing what such a little thing like that means to these guitars. But, I've never once experienced a less than stellar one with the stop tailpiece like these here.

Yeah, I hope they do this one again as well. It was simply the color choices that doomed this guitar. Red, White, or Blue and then this Budweiser finish. So, some more clever finishes and it would sell like crazy now that people are aware of them. They died before they got started. lol EVERYBODY seems to be looking for one now. I'm sure that PRS is aware of that fact.

That is all that most people pay for....the sticker on the headstock. What works for you won't work for the guy next to you, which is fine. Everybody wants something different. If not...we would all be married to our mothers and none of us want that. So, what works for you, works for you. If nobody else likes it, who cares? I am quite familiar with the Stagg guitars and they are actually better than a lot of horrible companies High End guitars.

Scott I know this is an old video . I have the chance to get a PRS SE EG for 300 bucks used of course, or I can get a newer ESP LTD EC 256. For 200 bucks . what r your thoughts ? Thanks.
@groovydjs
@groovydjs 6 жыл бұрын
Howdy. They are pretty much apples and oranges. The LTD would be way more suited to music with distortion etc. being used. So, metal, rock etc. The PRS would be best geared towards blues, country and anything else associated with Stratocaster type sounds.

Thanks for your reply. I found a. PRS. Se e.g. in near perfect condition. The guy I bought it brand-new 15 years ago, has played it out since then and gigs. Says it never goes out of tune that much, I know this is an old video have you had any success with the one with the whammy bar because that's the one I ended up getting the only one I could find but I did see a video where you can block it off but he swears the thing stays in tune if you keep it low in the back. Just your thoughts

I could fill the entire trem cavity with wood or steel, it simply would never come close to the stop bar version. The difference in sound is that huge.

@TheGishlullmoon Oddly enough, I can't stand the Custom 24. I hate those things. I love the SE EG so much better than any guitar they've ever done. And yeah, I have $3,000.00 Strats that the SE EG kills. I really like them that much. They are simply a better guitar.

@smacman68 Isn't that the truth? It's such a straight forward and simple design that just works better than anything ever made. So, what should they do about such a great guitar? Discontinue it! LOL You have to wonder about people sometimes huh? lol
