I think that Paul Reubens watercolors , their pro line, in particular, are fine. I have a set of 12 that I haven't used that much, but I recall them being very good...they didn't wow me or anything, but I thought they were fine. Are they exactly on the level of a number of the other widely available & premium watercolor brands made in the US, EU and Japan and some other countries? Probably not, but as with so many other things, as long as the people buying them are satisfied, it doesn't make much difference. That's not to say an artist selling their original works doesn't need to know and feel secure about the quality levels of the paint they're using. They do. I do know that PR has a pretty good reputation from many of the reviews that I've seen on KZbin and I've watched a lot. At the same time I don't see any of these same artists whose videos I watch the most, talk about & use Paul Reubens as a fave as much as I do with their use of Daniel Smith, Schmincke, M Graham, Holbein, Sennelier and some other brands that are becoming more and more popular. I just don't hear the mentions or raves. I think of PR wcs as in the same boat as White Knights from Russia. Both very good quality, but rarely picked out as a brand of choice among professional watercolorists. That may have more to do with marketing and availability of these brands, both at brick & mortar stores and across many online sites outside of Amazon.

I agree. The paint isn't bad quality but not being able to buy open stock means I'll never use them as my main paint. I would hate to have to buy a set in order to get a single color I used up.

Forgot to add: I do have a set of 36 Meiliang Watercolors, which is their student grade, I guess. But I love that set! The colors are all different, and there is a nice range of each primary. I use them probably even more than the professional grade set I put together from tubes.
@phillipstroll73856 ай бұрын
There is no law or science which determines what is student and what is professional. If you do something as simple as look at a search under a microscope you'll see white nights are no different than Rembrandt or Winsor Newton or any other "professional" grade. Moral of the story is, use what you like. Most professional artists use cotman anyway. Don't forget youtubers are paid to sell you shit. They are infomercial actors. Nothing more

Thanks for your honest review. I will be honest, I am not into a lot of these watercolor sets that many KZbinrs and social media influencers claim are "professional grade" and are so great, inexpensive, etc. The colors are typically made of cheap and/or multiple pigments, the sets have very similar colors instead of a wide range of different colors. And in all honesty, the sets, especially this Paul Rubens set, are waaaaaaay overpriced for what they are. I do not purchase "viral" sets like these. It is a waste of money for me, and they are items that I would never use past swatching. They would only end up in the trash-so I do not buy these overpriced sets because I don't like to waste art supplies and I definitely dont like to throw money away. The only "inexpensive" watercolors I use are Mijello Mission gold tube sets, as they actually are professional quality for very inexpensive prices. And I have a very cheap set from hobby lobby Masters Touch I was curious about, which was actually pretty good for the $24 price mark. And I have my very first Cotman palette still that I use in my sketchbook on occasion just to get the paints used up. Other than that, I stick with my Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton Professional set that I created myself from tubes. And if I want to switch things up or get new inspiration, instead of buying these cheap viral sets, I purchase a new color or two of DS or W&N and switch up my small 8 pan palette colors to colors I rarely use with new ones.

I don't think the labels are wrong with the umbers and siennas as the pigments are correct, I just think the brand got confused on what is umber and what is sienna. The raw umber looks like a raw sienna, and the umber a burnt sienna.. then the van dyke is accurate depending on what brand you go with though could be a raw umber as well, then the burned sienna def looks like a burnt umber, and i would say burned brown is accurate to it's name as well 🤷🏻♀ also all those greens you hate aren't meant to be used on their own and are work horse mixing greens for floral and landscape painters lol Oh yeah and as for the teal and turquoise debate, turquoise to me is what is usually considered "cobalt teal" and teal to me is like a "phthalo.. turquoise" go figure 🤦🏻♀

I would never buy a 48 set, i don't need that many colours at once. I have a 12HP Paul Rubens set, its OK. Not having open stock is a deal breaker for me. I already prefer brands that offer stable, consistent assortments (what is all the generation nonsense? Are they experimenting still?). Established companies offer lots of information about their R&D, testing, safety data (in lanuages I can read) and good quality control. None of this is available with Paul Rubens, this is again a deal breaker for me. With Schmincke, for example, you can download safety data sheets for all their products, their colours are consistent and very reliable. I prefer to build my collection with single pigment, high lightfast colours which are available open stock, from companies that provide detailed and accurate documentation with excellent quality control. Production standards and working conditions are also a factor. What does that look like for PR? Paul Rubens just doesn't make the cut for me on so many levels. Thanks for this refreshing honest review, it was comprehensive and thorough. Will check out your other reviews, I just discovered your channel. Thanks again!
