Pete I feel COMPELLED to share something with you and your audience… For unknown reasons-every SINGLE time, and in every SINGLE video of yours where I hear you say the words, “semi-opaque…” to describe anything that is, (duh) -semi-opaque…my brain immediately goes into echolalia mode leaving me mentally parroting THESE words, (with associated musical accompaniment)… 🎶🎸🎤 “semi-opaque kinda life…” (as if it’s 1998 and Third Eye Blind has chosen to dedicate their songwriting endeavors simply to their love for opacity in watercolor🤷🏻♀️ … Now we ALL get to live with this information🤗 Thank you for the video! Have a great night👋🏻😂✨

🤣 I once worked as a facilitator with mentally handicapped adults. (Rough, challenging and sometimes dangerous job). Once of my clients had many mental issues, seizures, etc. And one of his speech quirks was severe echolalia. At first it was off putting and I just had to adapt. But as I got used to it and I got to where I could predict when he was going to size, get mad, or have an episode. Poor guy, family never cared to visit him.

I was on the fence about buying these vs the Rosa...I'm buying the Rosa. I hate that pink color too. I watched other videos that swore that the only way to do watercolor is using single pigments...I never understood why or they sound like they are sponsored videos because they only recommend super expensive paint. IThanks for being honest! I really like the painting in this video too. When you're doing your paintings do you just paint what feels right in the moment or do you have somewhat of an idea beforehand. I'm still learning.
@IllustrationsByPete5 ай бұрын
Sometimes I use a reference photo to take inspiration from and sometimes I paint with a certain composition in mind without having an idea of what to paint. I always just develop areas as I go that seem interesting at the moment. BTW the Rosa's are a great option. 🙂

Oh, and their sparkle cotton watercolor paper, which they have a hot press and a cold press, is really nice. I have the cold press and use it to paint bookmarks, holiday paintings and the effect is subtle and pretty.

I like Paul Rubens a lot as a company. I think they put a lot of care into their products and I find it quite exciting to see a Chinese company that produces great artists materials that are affordable to people living in countries where perhaps western materials are out of reach. I look forward to see what else they come up with and how their products evolve. They really should be grateful for helpful reviews such as yours. I also think some stuff is def down to personal preference. I enjoy Rosa and PR both. They behave totally differently and I find that fascinating and thrilling. Every paint has its own personality. Right now I am loving Blockx! Would be aaaamaaazing if PR offered both paint and oil pastels open stock. I think the lack of open stock is the biggest negative for me when it comes to their products. But I largely really like them.
@IllustrationsByPete5 ай бұрын
The most important thing is they are trying to improve. That speaks volumes about who they are. I look forward to using more of their products in the future. I agree, open stock would be the best thing they could do right now. 👍🏻

I have the original set of 24 in the straight up pink tin, which I ignore because you know, I’m a girl 🤭 But I love the paints. When I hit pan then I’ll replace them. To be honest, I never use the palette trays included with tins, and it all gets in my woks space. I prefer to use a ceramic palette. So I remove the paint holder and set the tin aside.
@IllustrationsByPete5 ай бұрын
That's a good idea. I like using ceramic palettes too. 👍🏻

On the fence on this. At this point I'm looking for unique colors or effects. I've already got tons of Rosa sets and a full Holbein set of like 80 or something. If they added more granulated colors I'd junp on it.
@IllustrationsByPete4 ай бұрын
I agree. These won't add anything special to your current paints. I was just showing these more for people who are looking to get their first set of paint and honestly the Rosa's are a better choice anyway. 👍🏻

30:40 fun fact. Berlin Blue = Prussian Blue. Berlin was the capital of Prussia when the color was (accidentally) discovered by Johann Diesbach in 1706. Mr Diesbach was a cat lorist, trying to make a red colour. One of his ingredients was contaminated...and turned blue instead. 😮 I know this nerdy stuff because I happen to live in Berlin now 🇩🇪 and this Blue is one of my favourite colours. Pete, your honesty is so refreshing. Thanks for calliing the brand out on their literature: they want our $ but can't bother to communicate basic info about their materials? What else is important and they are not communicating it in a way I understand? Very sketchy (pun not intended!). Thanks again!!

Are there any watercolor tube sets you prefer? I'm not sure I want to pick out a bunch of single tubes
@IllustrationsByPete5 ай бұрын
I'm a "specific color" type of person. I usually get a sample card if I can and then pick my colors from there. I'm never really happy with the sets companies put together. But I would look at the smaller Daniel Smith sets, they have a ton, and then add a color or 3 to them. I also enjoyed the earth tones 6 color set from QoR but there's only enough paint in those small sets for a full pan of each color. I'm bad at this advice. 😂

2:54 Try spray painting rather than scraping the 🤢 pink tin. Acrylic spray paint (I use Edding permanent spray), primer spray or even car spray paint work great for this. Thanks again for this review. I am off to watch more of your videos today.

I like your stand on mixed pigments. Perhaps we're not adventurous enough to mix the colors ourselves instead of using pre-mixed ones 🤔 As long as you use it to make awesome art it shouldn't matter if the colour is pre-mixed or not. Your entity reminds me of a praying mantis in psychedelic "camouflage" 😊 Thank you for another honest review 🥰 ETA: I didn't see the other praying mantis comment before sending mine, you have my word 😟

I don’t think KZbinrs should feel obligated to give a nice review or abide by rules stipulated by the manufacturer in order to receive reviewable material. I have some past experience writing music reviews for a magazine and I could not imagine being expected to only say nice things ( that would be an advertorial, not a review!) OR even expected to *have* to review something that is sent in, if I the writers weren’t interested. KZbinrs are publishers, in essence - you should be treated as such.
@IllustrationsByPete5 ай бұрын
I get what you're saying but I also understand why a company would require at least a product demo if they are going to send out a free product. What they asked for wasn't too demanding and they know before they send me something that I always speak freely about my experiences, so I wasn't bothered by it.
@gertietheduck5 ай бұрын
@@IllustrationsByPete yeah, that’s true re the review in your case - that’s slightly different to what happens to music reviewers. they checked first and aren’t sending unsolicited products, so that’s fair. But the expectations of positive reviews rub me the wrong way. If companies want one, fine. But then they need to pay you for it (not with product, and at an industry rate that reflects your publisher status) and it needs to be clearly marked as advertising/promotion. I always get a bit irked at people dismissing KZbinrs and influencers for being given products or even getting paid to promote them (unless they don’t explain that it’s a paid advertising partnership), because in essence they ARE publishers, and I can tell you that many of them have a readership FAR larger than many famous magazines, so why should they devalue their work? I find advertising content boring but I don’t begrudge them for doing it. But a review is different, in publishing. That should be a gamble for the company seeking review. As a publisher, you are not being paid to review. The product is not a payment, it’s a review submission.
