This clip is taken from Paul Hollywood's Pies & Puds, first broadcast in 2012 on the BBC. While the Dorchester has changed since then, Paul's love of afternoon tea has not!

In 1981, I traveled to London with some colleagues from a radio station in San Francisco. We did a week of "remote" broadcasts from the Dorchester Hotel ... what a treat! We had afternoon tea on a couple of occasions, and I found that I'm much fonder of a "savory" tea, than one with cakes, and Petit Fours. In 1998, I went back to London with my Mom, who had always wanted to visit England. We went to the Dorchester for Afternoon Tea. Mom went for the sweets, and I fully enjoyed the finger sandwiches.

Just visited London and went to two afternoon teas. I fell in love with the scones at the savoy, they have such soft refined texture. They served clotted cream, jam and fantastic lemon curd. As lemon lover, probably the best topping I had.

Thank you for the super post. On the 14th of January 1963, leaving the two star Beverley Arms Hotel, I started work at The Dorchester as a Commis d'Etage on the 8th floor. That's when it was a Swiss Hotel: the manager was Swiss as was the head chef, the head floor waiter and loads of other young men escaping Swiss military service. I also worked there as a night waiter, a fish cook and in the bill and control offices. Happy days.

Somehow I like the small independent tea houses best. Also like the more working class cafes serving breakfast and cheap coffee. Feels more real and the people are nicer. I like to set up a "expensive afternoon tea" at home during the Christmas season.

Totally agree! I'd much rather have afternoon tea in a setting that's cozy, whimsical, or naturally beautiful than a fancy hotel (although if Paul Hollywood creates the menu, I would make an exception : - ). My favorite party I ever hosted was a Halloween-themed afternoon tea, and I would love to do Christmas next! How lovely that you do that for those you love at Christmastime! 🫖❤🎄
