So funny that M & S was your last pick. We are from the U.S. and only had 3 days in London. I told my friend that we couldn’t leave without having afternoon tea. I told her we should try M and S. They were sold out but the waitress could tell that we were from America and we were so disappointed so she put a special tea together for us. Can’t wait to go back.

You’re so smart for trying M&S! Their cafe is so laid back and such nice workers. They were friendly with us at two locations on our last trip. I’m glad you were able to have tea. I think they sell out of scones first, but they may have the rest.

Tea time is typically your meal arriving home from school or work. At least, it was in my area, northeast England.

I like tea, specially Earl Grey. I'm going to prepare a tea afternoon for a very good friend of mine, who is from London, it will be a surprise, I hope she will like it. Kind regards from Berlin
@Yaco18043 ай бұрын
You only add milk first if it’s a pottery cup, they are the ones that break on sudden impact with the heat. China, bone chine is more resilient to heat, it’s always tea first, milk second. I’ve never drunk tea with milk. It’s always been lemon or sugar. But I loved that you twist the scone. We never cut bread products, they are always broken. Bread rolls are the same.

YESSS !! You must be a Brit ! Lol. I've known these ,although I am Japanese. I've been a big tea drinker since I was so little about 5 ? And I've been loving Earl grey since I was around 12 since I read Agatha Christie's novels ! 👏👏👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞

Sadly, I lived and backpacked England and the Continent for seven months in '98 and didn't experience afternoon Tea! I did have Creamed Tea on a previous trip in '91 in Lavenham! It was brilliant!

I backpacked in '05 and also didn't have afternoon tea. Our lack of funds stopped us but we should have looked harder for an affordable afternoon tea. I hope you can go back to have the experience now!

Great video as always. Loved that you explained the difference between afternoon and high tea. Pet peeve of mine! One note - we were at the Ritz for afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago and for men it's jacket and TIE. They probably have extra loaner ties if you show up without one, but I just thought I'd mention that. Loved this video!!
@YourGuidesAbroad3 ай бұрын
We would hate to see Americans get shamed for calling Afternoon tea, high tea! lol Thanks for sharing the tie requirement! They probably want to see dress shoes too. As we like to pack light, it doesn't make sense to bring a jacket and nice shoes.

For a luxury feeling tea in London w a fantastic view w/ o overspending, I highly recommend a cream tea or champagne cream tea instead at Ivy right by the tower bridge !! I did it in 2022 ! You can have your tea right by the tower bridge !! 😍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶✈️🇬🇧💕💞

The fancy afternoon teas can provide dietary restriction options. Give them a call or check their websites.

Fantastic recommendations. All very good. We are thinking of trying the afternoom tea at Marks and Spencer on our next visit. How much did it cost you per person? Only 10 pounds? I thought it was 15 pounds. If it's 10 pounds it's a very good price. Can I buy more scones?
@YourGuidesAbroadАй бұрын
It cost us £10 per person. A great deal. Yes, the sell scones at the front.

Is the pricing for Arthur's Cafe off? On their website, none of their tea services are showing £28.50 for one /£54.50 for two.
@YourGuidesAbroad12 күн бұрын
Prices are subject to change and it looks like they did. I see £40 a person now. Wow, that is an increase. I guess we need to make another video for a mid-price option!

Hello! I have a trip planned this Christmas to London and Paris. I only have three days in London but I keep hearing it’s not safe. I’m not sure if all that I’m reading is true. I was thinking of actually skipping London and just going to Bath instead. I’d love to hear your thoughts?
@YourGuidesAbroadАй бұрын
It is safe. Very safe. When we lived there the only thing you’d hear about Christmas is home breaking as thieves knew no one was home. Visiting is safe. In fact, I did a midnight bike ride with a group at Christmas as it is quiet and peaceful in the city.

The very 1st afternoon tea was served at Langham London back in 1865. Low tea = afternoon tea was for high class people served in a formal setting . High tea = meat tea ,was for lower class /servants to eat standing during a dinner break . Royal tea is a fancier afternoon tea w champagne. 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞

The Rubens looks like a wonderful hotel and a great location but we haven't gone there for afternoon teas. Hotels are the fanciest places to go, in our experience.

thanks for explaining the Teas!!!! I was on a cruise with some friends from Leeds and they took me to afternoon tea...when i was given the scone I went to bite it and the face of horror on both of their faces with a head no shake...so I set it down and cut it and then went to eat one side and they shook their head...and then explained..the creame or jam first..and I said what if I did half and half? HA..
@YourGuidesAbroad3 ай бұрын
Haha, just when I thought no one would care. Tradition trumps all! Scone is pronounced like "gone" but I didn't want to get into accents.

Thanks for the info. I'll be in London soon. One thing: it's unlikely that Anna Maria Russell invented afternoon tea. Google "Why The Duchess of Bedford did not invent afternoon tea" to see why. If anyone has a claim on it, I suspect that Catherine of Braganza has a better one. (Also, the 4th Earl of Sandwich did not invent the sandwich, but that's another story).
@YourGuidesAbroad3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! We will look into that in more detail! We have heard that with the Earl of Sandwich. Erica worked for the Viscountess of Hinchingbrooke when we lived in London. Her husband is the future Earl of Sandwich. They have a great KZbin channel!
