This concert was to urge the world to help free Nelson Mandela, who was jailed in racist South Africa. The concert was in Zimbabwe. Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, she dared speak out against South Africa s racist regime and was exiled for many years This entire concert is brilliant. There is a concert tape that everyone should see. It’s brilliant, moving and very uplifting

Asante sana/Thank you Sarah! The lovely rhythms plus your heartwarming reaction elicited quite a few tears here, in honor of our beloved ancestor--the incomparable MA Makeba. RIEP.

@@SarahDengler She was called Mama Africa because she stood for her folks even in exile. Just a glorious soul.

Miriam Makeba (born March 4, 1932 in Prospect Township, Johannesburg; † November 10, 2008 in Castel Volturno, Italy) was a South African singer. Since her exile in 1960, she has fought against South Africa's then apartheid policy. Her 1967 song Pata Pata was very popular and I still like this song to this day. There is even a school named after her in Berlin.

The whole concert is absolutely incredible. This is Paul Simon´s The Concert. Featuring, among others, Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba (Rip). The atmosphere was in a class of its own, a real concert of peace and love. Blacks and whites enjoyed, listened and danced together. I remember when this concert came on TV in the late 1980s in Finland, and it blew my mind. I had never heard music like this. I learned to love the music that is now called world music.

Miriam (RIP) was a bit of a hit in the US back in the '60s. I have one of her albums. Her language has the 'click' sounds. She was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist

This concert was a strong effort by Paul and all musicians involved to honor African music without appropriating it. Such a beautiful effort from everyone involved to create a meeting of cultures.

Paul Simon has done MORE for #Southafrica reputation and for Southafrica Music and Musicians than ANYbody else in the 20th century ! And the ANC-people were SO stupid with their blabla about "breaking boykot" and all that nonsense 👿☠

Paul was criticised for 'exploiting' African music, and his results were that African music became more popular in the West. He didn't exploit, he promoted.
