Greetings from Canada. The guy in the hat looking is Ray Chikapa Phiri, guitarist. Miriam's husband is the world famous Hugh Masekela, on horns, to one side of Ray. Apartheid South Africa would NOT let Paul appear on stage with black performers... so Paul moved the concert to Harare, Zimbabwe, no worries. Peace, love and bellbottoms.

@@27thangel23 you nailed it! The man is in the R&R HOF, Songwriting HOF, and moves the concert to another country bc of insane racism and hate and that’s what makes him a legend. ❤️Tara da OG

Paul’s songs Homeless and Diamonds On the Souls of Her Shoes were accompanied by Ladysmith Black Mombasa. Excellent performance.

Miriam Makeba is a legend. Paul took a lot of crap for doing this concert. Thank goodness he followed through. So much wonderful music came from this performance.

Paul Simon is multi talented. Great singer and writer. Miriam Makeba great woman. She suffered so much . Thrown out of her beloved South Africa

@hazelanglin5907 Do you know the reason she had to leave South Africa? Was it because they had forbidden her and Paul Simon to be on stage together? Thanks!!

That’s why Paul Simon is the great artist he is-he wrote the song but didn’t need the spotlight. Glorious Miriam should be the focus and the beauty of the song shines

We had an album of Miriam Makeba that included a traditional south african wedding song westerners call the "click song" because they can't say the words with "clicks in them. It is a great song

I have the movie version of the concert. It’s still edited down from the full concert we used to have on VHS. If anyone knows how to get the full version, please reply.

Miriam (RIP) was a bit of a hit in the US back in the '60s. I have one of her albums. Her language has the 'click' sounds. She was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist

I think it was in this same concert, or a setting much like it on the same tour, Paul performs "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes." It is enchanting and it is dynamite! Please do check it out. You'll love it love it love it!

The concert in Rhodesia was scheduled to be performed in Johannesburg, South Africa but because of their Apartheid rules about mixing black and white it couldn’t happen Apartheid was repealed in 1991.
