Your joy is effervescent! I felt this when I first saw this on MTV in rural Texas. I had never heard these wonderful sounds and beats and language before. I’m grateful for musicians who have opened my ears and eyes and heart to the music of other cultures. Simon’s Graceland album is amazing. I still listen to it in its entirety several times a year.

When the workers in the South African diamond mines left work for the day, they had to have the soles of their shoes checked in case they'd trodden on any small diamonds while they were working and so could have worn them all the way home (intentionally or otherwise).

I don't know if people remember but four years after this concert, Headman Shambala (brother of the group's leader and one of the basses seen performing here) was shot and killed by a white security guard. - it apparently was a racially motivated killing.

I remember a lot of push-back on Paul Simon for going to South Africa to work this album. South Africa was embargoed due to apartheid at the time. I thought so then, as I do now, that his statements about an unpopular and misunderstood inclusion were stunning. Simon's poetry shaped my life. Not sure if Patterns or Underground Wall performed by Simon and Garfunkel, or others colored my view more. It was a delight to watch your reaction, Sarah. Thank you for sharing your joy.

Pauls album Graceland features an eclectic mixture of genres, including pop, rock, a cappella, zydeco, isicathamiya and mbaqanga. Simon wrote songs inspired by the recordings made in Johannesburg, collaborating with African and American artists. 🤞✌️

Such a great song! Paul Simon is such a great singer songwriter. After his success with Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's, Paul Simon went solo in 1970. He has a huge library of songs such as "Mother & Child Reunion", "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard", "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Still Crazy After All These Years", "Gone At Last", "My Little Town", "Kodachrome", "Loves Me Like A Rock", "The Boy In The Bubble" etc.

Thank you so much! My mum loves Simon and Garfunkel and Paul Simon. I grew up hearing these songs. There’s another that I think you’ll love. It’s called “Call Me Al.” According to Paul Simon, this song tells the tale of somebody like himself who travels to Africa. While there encounters a spiritual experience so extraordinary that his life is instantly edified. The song just sounds fun and whimsical, initially. Then, something magical happens. I really enjoy you ans your channel. Thank you for all you time and effort to make these videos for us. ❤
