Paul Simon is amazing. He takes an inanimate and mundane object like a Wristband and builds it into a great song and also has some social commentary to go with it. This song is pure genius.
@bonniepark68029 ай бұрын
Yeah but did you ever hear the story behind this song. Apparently he was playing at a venue and he went outside and he wanted to get back in but the security guard said no you have to have a wristband. And Paul Simon said I'm the star Entertainer I'm on the venue and the person said sorry you got to have a wristband and this one on and on and on and this is why he

Some poor kid or overgrown high school drop out door man decides he is going to earn his pay and has no clue who the band is ... After a few tours you expect it to happen. If walking around in circles back stage wasn't so boring, a artist would not want to leave the venue just to get some air . The only thing more boring than walking around a arena backstage , is walking around a outdoor festival grounds. You can not expect a temporary minimum wage worker to believe that you "belong" inside . Frustratingly funny , but not uncommon. The audience doesn't arrive until evening, but the band has been twiddling thumbs since the afternoon sound check ended . You gotta go for a walk or you go crazy ...and the girl with the wrist bands wont show up till doors ...lol Great song ..great songwriter.

Genius: the word "wristband" comes a beat early (like before he can finish "pearly gate"), which makes it feel like the guard is interrupting Paul Simon to ask to see his wristband.

It's great to see Paul Simon preforming at such an old age. It just goes to show he enjoys doing his job, and making money doesn't really matter. Take Clint Eastwood for example. He's 86, really rich, can retire easily and live in peace, yet he still directs movies cause he enjoys it. Paul Simon and Clint Eastwood both are true inspirations.

My favorite example of that is the last line of Dylan's Man Gave Names To All The Animals. After children's verses naming animals he alludes to the garden of eden and leaves the word snake out and ends the tune on a tension producing unresolved chord. Genius.
