One of my favourite directors of all time!! I absolutely love Boogie Nights in one of my top films of all time, I really warmed up to Magnolia after a viewing or two, Punch-Drunk Love is a great romantic story, and then you have There Will Be Blood and The Master which were really great and intensive character studies. I am yet to see the others. I agree with your assessment as well he never makes the same movie twice, but I love that he carries over the same universal themes across his films (ie: the surrogate family element touched upon in Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and The Master which were all completely different films).

When you both were discussing the end of Phantom Thread and Reynolds’s saying “I’m hungry” I believe it was a callback to earlier in the film the first time he allows Alma to come into his room to make love we assume. He’s very closed off and there’s a part where they’re at a restaurant and he looks over to Alma and says “I’m hungry” as in like he wants her and ready to open up a bit. At the end when he says it again I don’t think it’s that he wants another mushroom. Again, it’s a callback to that moment early on in the film. He’s already been sick, she’s taking care of him by the fireplace and he’s getting over the horrible sickness and looks at her lovingly and says “I’m hungry” meaning he wants to make love basically. That’s how I took it.

Random thought: I'm just realizing I don't like PTA's movies. I made it through Magnolia and Licorice Pizza only because I had gone to the movie theater with other people. And maybe I do like WES Anderson movies better. Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom are pretty good. Though I hated The Life Aquatic.
