The man just loves and appreciates a tune. Just like Me ,I hear ABBA I sing along cos I dig the tune. It's nothing abnormal to let go and enjoy a cool sound .

Can't agree with you more. The first time I put this CD in my player I was totally blown away by his covers of everyone from The Carpenters to Sister Sledge to the late great Gil Scott Heron. This man knows his music history. He doesn't attempt to emulate The Carpenters in anyway, but simply goes around their version and makes it his own. Well done Mr. Weller!

To put this song in perspective; it is from an album released by Paul Weller where he paid tribute to some of the great songwriters of our time- from Burt Bacharach to Gil Scott Heron to Nils Rogers to Bob Dylan. It is a wonderful album when listened to as a whole. If I were one of these writers, I would be honored to be included on this great album. It is called Studio 150. Buy it!

Weller puts grit into any song he sings - and I adore Karen Carpenter's version too. He makes this lyric sound tough as hell and tender at the same time.

I think he gave the song a very interesting twist, it's not like the typical pop romantic balad, he turned it into a rock balad without exagerating or going out of the essence of the song, he did a great job.

Mr Weller.....you would have us believe that you are a crusty old curmudgeon.....but you have a soft spot for beauty in melody and timeless song-craft....this is a stand alone and brilliantly unique take on one of the great Bacharach and David masterpieces, that requires no comparison with the angelic chanteuse KC....thank you sir_

So the genius has writer's block and what does he do..tour or endlessly mope around? Hell no! The Modfather does THIS ! One of the greatest reinterpretations of a standard ever, ever, EVER !!! Do you know how many singers have to put their stamp this song, and it either sounds like bad Karaoke or just plain bad? The man is an artist of the highest caliber! From "In The City" to THIS ! Put this bloke in the RnR Hall of Fame !!

The original by Burt Bacharach and performed by numerous artists never quite realized its potential. Richard Carpenter rearranged the song and it became a hit and is now the version of the song that everyone performs. Weller's version of this song is the best that I have found on youtube.

Why do birds suddenly appear Every time you walk near? Just like me, they long to be Close to you Why do stars fall down from the sky Every time you walk by? Just like me, they long to be Close to you From the day that you were born The angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon-dust In your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the guys in town Follow you all around Just like me, they long to be Close to you From the day that you were born The angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon-dust In your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the guys in town Follow you all around Just like me, they long to be Close to you Yeah, just like me, they long to be Close to you Oh darling Just like me, they long to be Close Just like me, they long to be Just like me, they long to be

@jojo jazz I love the way that Paul W chooses a classic Bacharach composition to cover brilliantly. I'm sure he has done it deliberately to noise up all the Jam Heads who would have been expecting a lazy cover of The Who or The Small Faces. That's Paul Weller for you.. always one step ahead of the sheep!!
