Paula is truly a classically trained dancer in multiple terpsichorean disciplines who taught and inspired an entire generation of cheerleaders and dance squads at camps, etc. She went from barely being able to make it as a professional dancer or athletic entertainment squad member because of her petite stature, ethnic sounding last name, and short extremities. She auditioned for the Laker girls as Paula Apfel instead of Abdul, and one year after joining she became the head choreographer. She IS Lakers Showtime. The rest is history! Janet has tremendous talent, but Every. Move. Paula. Makes. in this clip is magic. It’s like her body IS the music. Compare their bend after the spin - Janet nails it, and you can tell she’s having fun while learning/practicing , but Paula just has a different quality(?) that I can’t even explain.
