Agreed. Closely followed in order, by "Opposites Attract". This song has a hook, that just grabs your ear, and won't let go. That bass groove, down at the bottom end, is one of the best I've ever heard. Paula's vocals are tight, and dead on target.... and that guitar solo close to the end, is it's own little end of heaven.

I really love the lighting and stylish filming in the video. David Fincher was the music video king directing a wide range of iconic videos for Paula and other huge stars in the 1980s and 1990s. I remember watching this one as a kid mesmerized by Paula Abdul.

@@LudvigC *St. Paul* played the vocoder and the pitch-bending _"Watch Me" bass_ near the end. You can hear it during the fade out at 3:50 of this version, but you can hear much more of it on the album version of the song.
@LudvigC
@LudvigC 3 ай бұрын
@@oubrioko This is the album version (at least the album I had back then). To my best knowledge St Paul Peterson plays the synth bass all the way through - it's the same sound as the pitch bends you hear at the end. If I guess I would say it's a DX7 layered with something more analog. Could possibly be a sampler or something PPG too.
@oubrioko
@oubrioko 3 ай бұрын
@@LudvigC This is the 1989 re-release version of the song. The re-release titled _(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me,_ is an abbreviated edit of the album version. The original 1988 version on the album is over 5 minutes long, and is titled _The Way That You Love Me._ Virgin changed the title for the 1989 re-release due to *Karyn White* and *Paula Abdul* each initially releasing singles two weeks apart with the exact same title in August of 1988. The original 5+ minute album version is on Paula's official KZbin channel. There are three other keyboardists credited on the song, and St. Paul is explicitly credited in the album liner notes like this: _Vocoder, "Watch Me" bass: _*_St. Paul_*
@LudvigC
@LudvigC 3 ай бұрын
@@oubrioko Yeah you're right, this is an edit with some sections shortened or removed (same mix though). Listening closer, there is actually what sounds like an actual bass buried in the mix in the breakdown before the solo, but I don't think that's what they meant by "Watch Me bass" considering how brief and hidden it is. I have always figured the "watch me" was about the main bassline being so badass and show off-y. St Paul is of course both a bass player and kbd player, he could have played both.

They actually released it as the first single but it didn't go anywhere. They stopped promoting it and released Knock Out I think as the 2nd single then all of the sudden radio DJ's started playing The way that you love me, it started gaining traction, so they made a new star making video with David Fincher, re-released the song and Paula Abdul blew all the way up honey. If you watch the first video it was ok but it wasn't slick. These videos made stars. David Fincher was a star maker.

The thing to remember about this song is that it was released twice. In Aug. 1988 it was an abysmal failure peaking at #88. Then after "Straight Up" & 3 other tracks went top 10 (#1 for a couple of songs) & Paula became a star, it was re-released in Sept. 1989 & rocketed to #3.
@antcar1375
@antcar1375 4 жыл бұрын
When it was first released it didn't get any radio airplay except on the R&B charts so they gave up on that single and went to Straight Up. Then they had time after making Cold Hearted because Animation took 6 months so they had to release a single so they released The Way That You Love Me again because they know since she was on the pop radio stations that they would play it unlike before.
@bonusbaby801

@@antcar1375, I believe this is also a musical oddity. Normally they remix the album version to release as a single & it does better. When they 1st released "The Way That You Love Me", they released a remixed version &, as I said before, it failed miserably. When they re-released it a year later, they used the album version which, again as mentioned, became a hit. Not to say that the remixed version was the problem. I just think Paula wasn't as established at the time they 1st released it. Though I'm sure they expected a better showing considering "Knocked Out" just missed the Top 40 peaking at #41. Makes you wonder that if "Knocked Out" was released 3 or 4 years later when Babyface & L.A. Reid were at the top of the producing game, if it wouldn't have been a sure fire #1 smash. The music biz is truly bizzaro land.

@@bonusbaby801 this is still to date, my favorite song by hers. The only problem I had with the remix was that it faded too soon. It should have included the "watch me dancing" at the end. @@antcar1375, sorry, been a crazy few days. Thanks for that link. I had not seen that Apollo performance somehow. It was a good mix of both versions. It could've only been better if the tap dance break from the remix version video was in it...and if the audio quality was a bit sharper for downloading purposes. It's a shame Paula's musical career fell off so suddenly. Listening to her 3 primary albums, she was definitely not afraid to experiment with different musical styles which I think led to her down turn. I think people wanted her to just do "Forever Your Girl" album style music & lost interest when she went outside of that. As strange as the music biz is, I do give Virgin Records a lot of credit for letting Paula do various types of music & not restricting her to the formula that made "Forever Your Girl" a success. Most record companies don't let their artists stray from what made the company money.

2 bad the culture isn’t still like the chorus of this song. Now it seems to be only about what you have. Guess that’s why I’m still single. I love Paula Abdul!!

This song brings back memories...but honestly, I remember not caring all that much for her music. She's cool and all, don't get me wrong. I just can remember feeling like she was not a 'real singer'. She was always the perfect example of video killing the radio star, in my opinion.

Note the Nakamichi RX202 tape deck that used to flip the cassette around for you! Probably ran about $1000 back in the mid to late 80s.....
