"Hitting the wall" means when you cannot continue a race because your store energy in your system is completely depleted. Your body just stops like you had hit a wall. In case you didn't know
@lukebreakey87453 жыл бұрын
Your body stores enough to make about 3 hours of continous movement. That is why carb loadeling is important before long runs. Even with carb loading before a race. It is a good idea to start putting gels, sugars and small energy packed bites into the body to have enough energy to finish the race. The enegry stored up in your body is used to operate your mucles, like your legs when running. It also powers the brain for thinking. When people hit the wall they have no more fuel storage to run their muscles, their legs are tired so they collapse. The thought to stand up and just walk requires fuel as well. You are ao out of fuel, you cant think and walk at the same time. It really is something you have to experience before you can fully understand.

also when it comes to pacing, if you reach the finish line with fuel left you paced wrong. she ran out of fuel while in the lead with only 200 yards to go. that's almost perfect pacing, being off by 200 yards in a 140 mile race.

She's trying to pace herself. After 2.4 miles of swimming and 112 miles of biking, running a full marathon is borderline insane. I'm surprised she's still going that strong after all that. No way I could. And water works wonders. It gives you the energy and strength to keep going. Being skinny doesn't affect one's need for water. As for hamburgers, how did you eat at all during a 6.2 mile race? Also, burgers won't help much in something like this. You need energy bars and gatorade.
@DayOfSuffering14 жыл бұрын
@GShock112 I'm sorry to inform you, but she did quit. I think it was 1998 or 1999 when she got a DNF und quit after 12Miles on the run. Nevertheless she is a great Athlete!!!

For those who have never competed at the highest levels it’s hard for you to truly understand. Our legs turn to wet noddles, our brain only understands 20% of words being spoken, all our senses are lost and for some the lost control of both bodily fluids. Taken your body way past 110% of a feeling that few have experienced but it’s something that sticks with you for the rest of your life.

No they are not the same according to Dr. Gabe Mirkin...who did a fair amount of running in his day . Hitting the wall results from glycogen depletion in muscles (apparently the muscles can only hold enough glycogen for about twenty miles of running)whereas bonking results from depletion of glycogen in the liver. You can recover from a bonk by taking in some quick carbs like a can of pop but you cannot recover fast when you hit the wall. But I would suppose the whole topic is open to debate.

@TheScoobyRS Well in all fairness, the 3rd place finisher would've just passed her, if there hadn't been 50 media people walking with Paula, but yeah not the best form to push someone who'se that down. But a podium is a podium finish and it might've been that 3rd place finishers only podium at Hawaii ever.

i don't really agree with those who think it was wrong that she was passed for third at the end...why should an athlete give up their own personal achievement just to give another a sense of personal achievement, especially to someone who had already accomplished as much as Paula? The woman who got third finished stronger than Paula, and so she deserved third instead of Paula. I think that the only thing the 3rd place woman did wrong was not give a consoling pat on the back as she went by.

@gandalf117 Why? All the runners started at the same starting line together at the same time. If I run a steady pace the whole way through and you run faster but you stop and rest for 10 or 20 minutes yet still make it to the finish line before me, under your own power, you deserve to win because you did the same distance in less time.
