Paul i just want to say how thankful i am for your work. your presences on social media, well on youtube, is immensely helpful to my independent studies of music. I'm in two-year college for vocal performance currently but as it is only a two year program i won't be getting too deep in my studies for some time. having access to your performances of the WTC alongside the score and with visual representation is a gift that is beyond appreciation.

One of my favorites. I had never heard it played like that, though. Like hearing it for the fist time again. Thank you very much for sharing this. A very big hug from Brasil :)

The mix between staccato and tenuto on 1st and 5th beat is beautiful. It recalls me a couple of baroque dancers which are moving their feet forward on 1st and 5th beat and resting during the other beats. Really very much intense. Genial.

Do you memorize all of these pieces while recording or do you sight read?

I prefer by far your staccato version, which I find sharper, to your legato version. Yet the legato version has many more likes. Maybe just a matter of taste.
@Fanchen7 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I played this several years ago. I played left hand as legato however. Is there a reason why you chose for it to be detached?
@Fanchen7 жыл бұрын
Aside from demonstrating the slurs you intended of course.
@Fanchen7 жыл бұрын
I see, so he was faithful to the period. Glenn Gould did not bother making notes as detached as this recording. When I played this piece for the music festival, adjudicators did not criticize my legato playing. It's beautiful how the baroque period enables various acceptable interpretations.
@Fanchen7 жыл бұрын
I noticed he uploaded a legato rendition. They are equally unique.

I'm confused. I remember I read somewhere Bach never used octave parallels, yet right they are at measure 19, 20 and 38 of the Fugue.
@albionisland9297 жыл бұрын
In cases like this they aren't two voices that are parallel, but instead one of the voices had dropped out and the remaining voice is doubled at the octave (just to make it sound more full and big). It's not super common, but definitely not rare for it to happen for a measure or two in baroque music (particularly in keyboard music; in fact the most common place to find it is in a keyboard work for two voices). That well-known musette in D major in Bach's Little Notebook is a good example I can think of off the top of my head.
