What helped me a lot was learning a bunch of triad patterns (I mean, just playing three notes) - not just the patterns, but the which is the first, third, fifth etc. That "aha" moment when you can visualize exactly which notes chords have in common or which are just a semitone away etc will change your playing. chords, inversions and also open voices , voice leading etc. Sound like scary music theory, but its isn't really.
@mark75924 жыл бұрын
I'm starting to get more and more into triads and inversions. Now it almost feels like strumming those basic chord patterns sounds so dull. I think Paul might have a video about it. I think most rock/pop songs actually use mostly triads and some added notes, doubled notes are just unnecessary. It opens so much more stuff about playing. And like you said, it's not that hard.
@reneeschke4 жыл бұрын
Any examples for these triad patterns?
@mark75924 жыл бұрын

Thanks, Paul. Many “musicians” don’t appreciate the richness of the slash chords and rely upon the base player to direct the chord progression. Realizing the beauty the slash chord is an “a-ha” moment for many guitarists. The challenge is to subvert the tendency for laziness.

Being a brass player (mostly trombone) and using guitar for song writing these is the way I hear chord changes. I had to learn the chords to go along with the moving lines in my head

I've been learning guitar on the internet since years but the way you teach stuff and stress on the application of things helps so much. Love your videos. You've got a fan in me. Please continue the good work!

I am so glad that I found this video! It has taken me so long to find a decent video that has helped me to understand how slash chords work. Keep doing what your doing. You have helped me with music theory more than I ever could have imagined.

I found this video exceptionally helpful.. Gives so much range to anyone who is writing a song and needs the right progression.. A lot more choices than the typical open chords

This video is fantastic! Thank you Paul David’s for being one of KZbin’s greatest guitar teachers! I truly love this series ( and the faster pace!) you really have something for every stage in a guitarists journey. Wonderful to see these techniques applied in actual song contexts!

I came upon these chromatic runs by accident without knowing what they are called. I use them whenever I can by figuring which chords work together. They make a song so much more interesting.
