Who would carry a gun chambered in .45 Colt for self-defense? Well, I do. I have an N-frame S&W model 25-5 in .45 Colt, modified by Jovino Gunworks, Inc. (upstate NY) who cut the barrel to 3.5 inches and cut the square butt and re-welded it to a round butt K-frame configuration. Pachmayr grips and an El Paso Saddlery holster makes it my favorite open-carry going-to-town gun here in NW Montana. Bought it in 1986 in El Paso, Texas, when I was on the S.O. there, it has the slickest action I have ever touched. Now I know what my new carry ammo will be! Thanks, Paul.

I recently picked up a very nice used 410/45 Colt single shot New England Survivor carbine. Now I want a 45 Colt handgun to go with it. I am a Smith guy - I'd love to have the one you have ! But I'll probably get a Ruger single action. I've owned several Blackhawks over the years, including 2 chambered in 45 Colt. I just can't believe how much they have went in price. They used to go for $200-$250 used around here. I did pick up a 50 round box of Federal American Eagle 45 Colt ammo at my local Rural King a few weeks back. On sale they were $65. I thought for that price they should be semi gold jacketed rounds ! Lol.

It's available in double action revolvers, single action ones, derringers, lever carbines, pump carbines, single shot pistols and rifles and many of these also shoot 410 shells. A few can even take 45acp with clips. That said it's less popular for carry than for ban state home defense, hunting in areas where spitzer rifle rounds are banned and as a cheaper way to enjoy practice with 454 casull revolvers.

Yeah, I can't say it's "going strong." There are much better caliber/ammunition choices out there, as well as more modern firearms. Is it still around, though? You bet. I still use Ruger single actions for several calibers, just none of them are .45's.

As always, love your vids Paul. I used a pair of Vaqueros for cowboy action shooting and I can say that you can adjust the windage by turning the barrel left or right a smidge to correct. You do this by removing the cylinder and ejector shroud, clamping the barrel securely in a vice (the hardest part - some rosin and hardwood vice blocks helped me) - then you use a piece of hardwood through the cylinder frame and tweek which ever way you need - it takes very little rotation to make the front sight move enough to matter. - Paul, you probably know this but I thought I'd post for others. Hope you heal up quick!

The S&W 25 is a current production double action revolver with adjustable sights in 45 Colt. As a 6.5” N-Frame, it’s not exactly perfect for the “concealed” part of carry, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be used as home defense or worn on a big belt and holster on the ranch or similar.

Well the origin of the unofficial "long colt" designation is from the military ball ammo (m1877 iirc)that was released after the supply issues where schofields couldn't shoot.45 colt ammo because it was too long and SAAs could only load every other round if they received Schofield ammo because the rim was too big. The new military ball ammo to fix the problem had the Schofield length with the colt rim size and could be loaded in either gun and is what people unofficially called.45 short colt because it had the.45 colt rim size in a shorter length.
@beargillium2369
@beargillium2369 5 ай бұрын
I thought it was just Schofield that was colloquially known as "short colt" because it fit in the SAAs, and the "long" was added to 45 colt "long" so soldiers didn't try to load it in their Schofield revolvers and cause major issues like damaged hands

Great comparison. If we are lucky enough to get a part two, I’d love to see Winchester Defender 225 grain bonded hollow point tested. I’d also like to see the Barnes load of the 200 XPB and Underwood or preferably Buffalo Bore 225 grain lead semi wad cutter hollow point.

Thanks Paul, that was an excellent episode. I carry a S&W Model 25 4" Mountain Gun in 45 Colt and it sleeps under my pillow. I'm a retired SWAT guy and have always believed two things. A bigger hole lets more blood come out and a hole all the way through is two holes and that lets lots more blood come out. Win, win. Putting those holes where they do the most good is the trick. I've been carrying the Federal 225 Soft Point but will be seeking out those awesome Hornaday Critical Defense 185's.

In reality that revolver had closer to one full inch longer barrel than the 1911. A full 5.5 inches of travel since the cartridge resides in the cylinder. The 1911’s 5 inch barrel includes the chamber that the cartridge sits in, so it has closer to 4.5 inches of travel. So, using a Ruger with a 4.6 inch barrel would have been a closer comparison. But then again the revolver loses a little bit of velocity through cylinder gap, so who knows? Great vid Paul.

yeah, close enough I suppose. apples to oranges with cylinder gap. more of a point of reference than a direct comparison.
@jamesreid3336
@jamesreid3336 5 ай бұрын
cylinder gap plus the half inch or more travel in the cylinder isn't rifled. So I'd say close enough. Could say the Redhawk in 45 colt / 45 acp firing both would be a better comparison but then again that portion on unrifled travel would be different for the 2 bullets

Thanks Paul as this is food for thought. It also sends me back down that rabbit hole of all the different types of .45 Caliber rounds, Like the .45 Short Colt which I think may also be called the .45 Colt Government, vs the .45 Long colt, .45 Schofield and the much older .45 Colt (11.43x33mmR) which was actually a black powder round for use with the 1872 SSA. And for the most part you are forgetting one type of person that carry's a .45 Revolver, and that would be those like me who are former Pinkerton agents and a few military personal that had a .45 SSA Colt. Oh and definitely thanks to the guys helping Paul right now, as you guys are great.

I wish you a speedy and full recovery, Paul. While we're not allowed to either carry nor protect ourselves in kanada, I do like the 45 Colt platform, and have a couple of replica SAAs that I enjoy shooting. Among my boxes of ammo is one of American Eagle, 225 grain Jacketed Soft Point, and if SHTF perhaps this would be a good choice for protection? All the rest I have are "cowboy" lead loads. Get well soon! Edit to add: Question Answered. LOL The rest of my message still stands. 🙂

I love Hornady ammo. Most consistent through the tools that i have. I have some serious problems finding Hornady in the calibers i hunt with. It used to be easy. Now it's all "military" calibers that are easy to find. You know, the types politicians were trying to get rid of. Funny how that works. .338 win mag, .300 win mag, .30-30, .22-250, 10mm, .460 s&w and even .45 long Colt.... They've all been hard as hell to find. Especially the .338. Thanks for another great vid! I hope you heal up well.

Great video! I'm glad you used actual defense ammo and not cowboy action ammo and called it a day. I personally carry a SAA as my carry piece (yes I have other "modern" pistols I carry too). I did so because of how often I am in the woods. Less moving parts to break or jam, caliber works great on people and large game, and they shoot really great. 5 or 6 shots is plenty for a citizen (remember how people recommend snub nosed revolvers with no reloads?) day to day concerns.

Thank you for the presentation and I hope you get well soon. If I understand it correctly. The military had 38 caliber revolvers and found them insufficient and wanted a 45 caliber in an auto loader. So John Browning developed the 45acp to mirror the power of the 45 colt or long colt. The 45acp was just a modern auto loader version of the 45 colt. I noticed something also. I watch a lot of gun videos and I noticed that the energy ft lbs you got was very similar to 380 acp in other videos. Just thinking it doesn't matter too much about caliber. It's more about what you can shoot well.

250gr Gold dot is rare these days. As a handloader I load mine at 1050fps and have really great expansion, good expansion at 850-950. My guns are modern Rugers and S&W. Those odd calibers in Gold Dots are as you noted are well under loaded to their design expansion range. Until your video I'd never considered that the Hornady FTX Critical Defense. Thanks!

The way I understand it. In the1800s the u.s. army issued two different 45 pistols. One was the colt 73. The other was the Schofield. The 45 Schofield round was .5” shorter than the colt round. The cylinder on the Schofield was also shorter so the colt round couldn’t be used in it. So to keep the right ammo shipped to the right place. They started stenciling 45LC on the out side of the ammo crates.

Since the cartridge originated in the black powder era, there have actually been some significant improvements made to the load, especially if you have a Ruger. Could be safe and go .454 Casull, which is purpose built for it, but, in the right gun, there are some .45 Colt loads that rival .44 Magnum and even the more cautious modern loads hold their own against many recent handgun cartridges. Now, there are cowboy loads that are purposely extra soft shooting, but that's not a good representation of the actual cartridge.
