The main point to a long slide 1911 is a 10mm. That or a 45 super or .460 Rowland. I purchased my Dan Wesson Bruin 6.3” slide to do just that. The Springfield V-16 45 Super was designed to shoot 45 Super. Check out the ballistics of that, or better yet the .460 Rowland. The awesome thing about the long slide Kimber or Dan Wesson is .460 conversions can be done sans compensator with the extra slide weight.

@@dustyrhodes2717 True but with the compensator that is necessary for the added weight to slow down the slide you also get the recoil and muzzle rise taming effects, you will lose a little velocity but with a .460 Rowland cartridge you will be left with plenty of velocity and energy even with the shorter 5" barrel which would actually be closer to 5-1/2" with the extended threaded barrel.

Hey everyone, the slow readings on the chrono were a malfunction. If the velocity had really been that low you would have seen (and I would have felt) a significant difference in recoil. Hey Paul, I've been an off and on viewer for a while but I can't think of seeing a drop test from you, like you said would be featured in part two. If you haven't filmed it yet, a series of tissue paper targets every 20 yards or so would be nice to see the path it takes. I'm sure you already have a plan, but just in case, that would be pretty satisfying to measure the drop. Plus tissue paper (not Kleenex, but the gift kind) should have a minimal impact on velocity.

The box of 110 gr 357 Mag I bought " because they were there " may actually have some merit as higher velocity may equal expansion at greater range . I think the actual thinking behind the round is a more effective snubby round though my 357 is 6" .

My hypothesis from studying results like these is that a cartridge's sensitivity to barrel length is mostly dependent on ratio between the bore diameter and the case capacity. Something like .45 ACP with a large bore and a small case tends to attain maximum performance out of a relatively short barrel, since the surface area that the powder gases have to push on is very large, allowing it to impart more force onto it over a short distance. Additionally, as the bullet travels down the barrel, a larger bore diameter opens up more volume for the gas to expand, lowering the pressure significantly more over distance than a smaller bore would and imparting less force. This is also why most small-bore rifle cartridges with comparatively high case volumes like .223 benefit greatly from extra barrel length, and you could extend the length well beyond what would be practical on a firearm to continue gaining velocity. Lighter bullets loaded with a greater powder charge in the same case would also benefit slightly more from extra barrel length based on this observation, since the amount of gas generated would be greater and the pressure would be able to be sustained longer.

@@GARDENER42 They probably expand perfectly fine - in gel. This is why you shouldn't solely count on the expansion of ammunition to do the work for you. Maybe if they were going faster they would've expanded in the meat target. But sometimes things get stuck inside the bullet's divot and make it fail to expand. Things like leather, denim, wood if shooting through a barrier. It's also why I tend to favor faster 185 grain projectiles when I can find them. I've also seriously considered Selier & Belot's 155 grain solid copper rounds that are advertised to move at 1,250 FPS. I think we're past the stage where a bullet traveling at 850 FPS is acceptable, particularly when looking at expanding ammo we should be looking at 1,100 FPS or higher to give it a better chance of expanding on hit. Heavier rounds might be better for deep penetration required to take down big game, but for 2 legged varmints I want ammo that's going to expand and that means pushing that lead pill a little bit faster.

That Winchester ammo is weak. .45 acp ammo should have a muzzle velocity of 850 ft/s and have about 380 ft/lbs of energy. Hell, that Colt Government was seeing 815 ft/s; that sucks. I like to use Underwood target ammo, which is the standard 230 grain ball, but the box says it is 900 ft/s, and yes, it is a bit spicier and it kicks a tinge more than the American Eagle target ammo in the same bullet weight (230 gr). Going off topic, I have a Kimber 1911 Stainless Target II, and like it very much; it is chambered in 10 mm though.

I find that a slower burning powder was helpful in increasing velocity in longer barreled guns - Blue Dot was what I used 20+ years ago. It has been difficult to get 230 grain standard pressure loads to achieve a velocity that will reach the bullet’s expansion threshold. Glad you did the video.

The game was Bowling Pin shooting and we decided that a 200 Power Factor was a good performance parameter. One of the guns I made for the game was a 1911 design with a 13” barrel, and using Blue Dot and the H&G 68 hard cast 200 grain bullet, 1100 ft/sec was a good balance of power and controllability.

@@ElGeecho Why do you gotta question everything? im 3/2022 5'9.5 (176.5cm) and if i gained 3% it would make me 181.8cm wich would be drastically diffrent and mean much to me, and it would put me in taller than average in finland wich is 180.4cm. My point is 3% matters when you are talking about lower numbers, and 3% in 800fps gun dont matter, but maybe in bicep size? My biceps are 13.5in (34.3cm) + 3% = 35.3cm (13.9in) and the change would be visible and matter

Another thing to consider is the difference between different makes and models of ammo. A different brand/load of 230 gr JHP might expand just fine out of the 5" Colt even at 25 yards, while a third brand might not even expand coming out of the 6" Kimber at 5 yards. As Paul has said before you have to test YOUR ammo out of YOUR gun at the distances (and preferably conditions) you are likely to use it for.

Yep, I’ve got some 185 grain Hornady XTP’s that can’t handle the velocity of .45Super (1,400-1,500 FPS) and they simply shatter on impact. But slow those down to .45acp+p speeds (1050ish) and it expands wonderfully

Enjoyed the presentation. Haven't seen 45 bullet testing in awhile. In the '70's, I bought a Gold Cup and tested a lot of bullets as I was looking for my best target shooting load. Just about none would expand. After lots of target shooting, I just left it as my home defense gun using Win 185 gr Silver Tips. After all these years, I think any bullet, 22-45 caliber that hits accurcally to the spot you need, will get the job done.

Good demonstration. I have a 4" .45 ACP, bullet selection is pretty important when it comes to expansion. The Rem would not be on my list even though I run 185gr hp stuff. These days we find some great performance from lower velocity bullets. Far lower than I would have guessed. Finding those projectiles is easier because of content from guys like you, thanks for doing the work.

Federal makes a 9mm Luger HST for micro pistols that launch 150 grain bullets at about 900 fps. I laughed about them and made jokes. Then, I saw the test data from Lucky Gunner. They shot it from a Glock 43. They shot 5 rounds through 4 layers of fabric. Every round opened up to huge outside diameter. They also penetrated well due to the weight of the bullet.

Got myself a SA Garrison couple months ago. I really like it. The only thing I changed was to put a set of Truglo TFO sights on. That's the only change I will make. I carry it in a shoulder holster, and it is my EDC.

Hey Paul, a small tip: when you're about to shoot, roll out a medium to large size tarp or painter's drop cloth, etc to catch all your spent brass. You may not reload everything you shoot, but that's once-fired brass and it has some small value to someone you know, or even monetary value.

I cut two wooden broom handles, tap a nail on the top of the post, and shaved the other end into a point. Stick them into the ground, hang a tarp on the nails (tarp is at a ~30deg angle), and it will catch, stop, and collect up all the brass. Doesn't work so well in wind though....

Aslong as bullet is stabilized, barrel length doesn't affect inherent accuracy but the longer sight radius may help one aiming.

Another issue, and this is where micro-seconds matter. It takes more time to effectively clear a holster with a 6" longslide than a commander size handgun. Yes, competition shooters do well with that...after thousands of reps and using competition holsters.

I would think it would be capable of greater mechanical accuracy, since the longer barrel is supported at 2 points farther apart, a given amount of slop in the lockup and barrel bushing will give the barrel a smaller angular range it can wander around in.

To me the main draw for getting a 6" over a 5" is purely extra barrel weight (to keep the gun on target better for faster follow up shots) Maybe tiny bit the extended sight radius maybe the 25fps is a tiny bit too, but not why I would ever buy a 6"

Neighborhood ammo central. I like the sound of that. I focus on 9x19 as my own preference but getting a few token boxes of all the common calibers for a couple hundred bucks would be invaluable "if times get tough". Sounds like a plan to me.

1 factor that can affect muzzle velocity from seemingly "identical" firearms is the rifling, and how much relief before the rifling fully engages the projectile. Some barrels have different depths of rifling and/or completely different forms of rifling entirely. Quite the rabbit hole to get lost in.

I would really enjoy seeing this same test done, but with 10mm 1911s, and see the difference between standard and longslide. I would guess (but do not know) that the difference between the two would be bigger with ammunition that has more powder to burn. A lot of 10mm handguns will shoot a little fire out the end, leading me to believe there's powder not being fully utilized.

10mm is a much higher velocity round so you'll probably get reliable and very good expansion regardless of the difference between a 5 or 6 inch barrel.

@@josephahner3031 Dependency on the speed of which powder is used...Like the .357 (similar performance to 10mm) I have noticed that faster burning powders (like AA#2) don't gain as much from barrel length, as AA#9...in fact the 16" carbine barrel seems "too long" for very fast AA#2 - and perfect for AA#9 or #5744...

My guess is the longer barrel would matter when using a medium burn powder like Power Pistol. You can achieve velocities right at 900 fps in a five inch barrel with 230 grain bullets without exceeding standard pressure.

I only lose about thirty fps between the four barrel lengths I have on hand for .45... and that's 3.3 to 5 inches. Seems like good old low pressure .45 isn't very barrel sensitive.

Non-standard 45 in the range of 175gr definitely improves the hollow point threshold. However, I'm not sure about drop. Winchester super clean 160 grain would be interesting to see

I have a Glock model 40 in 10mm. It’s a MOS model so it has an optics platform. I use a delta point pro by leupold as my optic. With the long slide I feel like I get a little bit more out of it. Plus the barrel is more centered because the bushing is further out. It may be a confidence thing. It it works well

I didn't watch this video right away because I was pretty sure I knew how it would go. Regarding the velocity measurements, I was about right. An increase with a six-inch barrel, but a small one. The difference in the bullet expansion was a surprise, though! Now, I know different bullet types and brands are all going to be a bit different. Still, it really made this a worthwhile video! And you really predicted all the right questions about the 185-grain ammo. I'm going to be much more eager to watch part two of this investigation.

@@poptya It's an interesting question but one that likely couldn't be answered. Simple fact of the matter is if you took 5 barrels from 5 manufacturers all of the same length, you'd probably get 25 different mean velocities with a lot of overlap. It's not like Rock Island's barrels are going to trend toward faster velocities than Colt's barrels, it's more like that particular barrel is allowing the round to be pushed faster. And swapping barrels on a 1911 isn't always a matter of pull 2 guns apart, put Colt barrel in RIA and vice versa. There are 3 different ramp styles for 1911 pistols, 5 different barrel link lengths, the upper lugs for the barrel have to be fit to the slide, and the feet of the barrel fit to the slide stop.

Regarding the lack of expansion, I do remember reading a study that determined you generally needed 850 to 900 FPS velocity to get reliable expansion, so the rounds here being at around 816 FPS from the 5” gun probably was below expansion threshold out of the muzzle. That’s probably why many hollow point rounds are loaded a little faster even for 230 gr., though I don’t remember what the velocity for the Winchester White Box you tested a few years ago which had impressive expansion even at 25 yards. EDIT: Yup, watching further seems like your results matched what I read. The long slide propelling the projectiles to around 840 FPS made expansion a lot better. Still wasn’t 100%, but as it went closer to that 850 to 900 mark, it went better.

I enjoyed watching this test as I am 45acp fan. I believe that the 45acp 230gr hollow points lack of consistant expansion has been well documented over the years but with little said on solving the problem other than saying just stick to hardball. I would like to see, as further iterations of this test how would std velocity soft, or pure lead bullets perform. Then the next level of soft lead, being the polymer coated soft lead, and the last being a Berry's type copper plated soft lead bullet. It seems to me that one of those choices might be a good solution over the more expensive goochi self defense rounds.

This is a great presentation. I’ve always loved the .45 round but in testing with gel I’ve naturally seen poor expansion with 230 grain self defense loads. I’ve known people who carried the 230s in 4 inch commander models and always figured it was like carrying ball ammo. I like the size and look of the commander models but never got one specifically due to the shorter barrel length and my experience with the 5 inch barrels being finicky with hollow point expansion. It’s very interesting that the 25 ft/sec increase in the 6 inch model made such a huge difference in expansion. That gels with my previous intuition that 230s are right at the border for expansion velocity out of a 5 inch gun. In addition to your next part where you incorporate 185 grain ammo (which I ultimately ended up carrying) I’d really love to see an experiment or two with the 4 inch commander model if you can get hold of one. I’ve always wondered whether 185 grain self defense loads would expand out of a 4 inch barrel but never had the opportunity to test it. Thanks a million Paul for every presentation you put out.

After hearing so many anecdotes about poor HP expansion from both 230 and 185, I just starting using 230 FMJs in the 1911. Maybe some mildly hot reloads would fix this issue, but until I head down that road, I'll just stick to the good old ball ammo. Like you, I would like to see how a 4" stacks up against the 5" and 6"

I don’t own a .45 or a 1911. I do have my grandfather’s Model 1903 .32ACP. Wow does it shoot great! Incorporates many design features that went into the 1911, ever since shooting it now I’m wanting an official 1911…no money for that though. Maybe some day.

I had this problem with hollow points not expanding in 45s acp and long clots, after seeing a couple of wrecks were. The cars hit tires and the damage was extensive, I got the idea to fill them with black RTV I got good results. I called several bullet manufacturers and discussed it with them Hornaday was one of these.

Given the mixed expansion performance of the JHP from the Kimber, I wonder if the bullet to bullet velocity variation determined which expanded and which didn't. Would it be possible to shoot the bullets through the chronograph and then check expansion for each velocity? That might provide the specific expansion velocity for that type of ammo.

@@RobinP556 The gun dealer where I bought my 6" .45 told me he had a Javelina in his inventory, but couldn't get it to run reliably. He is a pretty famous German gun maker (STP / formerly STI Europe) specialized in 1911/2011 guns and S&W Club30 member, so it must have been a major issue with that one. Another problem may have been the lack of high powered 10mm ammo in Germany, all factory loads are just as weak as long cased .40S&W 😕

For part II please try and include Hornady .45 ACP Critical Defense 185 FTX rounds. They work surprisingly well out of my Colt Defender with 3" barrel. I would also like to see how Hornady .45 ACP Critical Duty +P 220 grn. Flexlock loads work out of your full size pistols. Thanks for all the interesting and also entertaining videos.
