I found Paul about a year and a half ago. I'm in the excruciatingly long process of world building a colony planet. Recently I got a bug up the ass about why my colony was still using Earth measurements, so I invented a measurement system... aaaand quickly discovered just how much that changes. By the time firearms will matter, all the "Old Earth" firearms are in museums. Everyone is using standard local firearms, cuzz, who's gonna travel 20,000 light years to swing by the gun shop? Local measurements changed calibers. My equivalent to a 9mm, is the 1/4 pounder, whick is 8.5mm, or .25 of a local inch. Sooo... I'm doing research... aagaaaaiiinnnnnn... to see what equivalents are currently out so I don't have to magic ballistic numbers from my divine prostate region. I was currently looking at big game lever action rifles. When a Paul Harrell video pops up, I watch it, no matter how old, or relevant. He's just too fucking awesome. @ravissary797 жыл бұрын
john panoulias not at all. But it's a pun related to a belief commonly expressed here as if it's totally factual. It isn't. It's possible to hunt rabbit with a .44. It's still less ideal than 22, sure, but it shouldn't just explode. I'm sorry if not laughing or joking back offended you. That wasn't my intent.
@DOA2207 жыл бұрын
No! no offense taken! lol, sorry I just thought you honestly missed the joke. I honestly, have never shot a rabbit, however I definitely will remember your advice for the future. I figured all .44 magnum rounds would devastate the poor little guy haha.
@ravissary797 жыл бұрын
john panoulias to be honest neither have I, but .44 rounds come in a VERY wide range of power levels, and a cowboy-action .44 special is just a fat mouse fart of a round, similar in power to an old lead 38 special load. It'll make a hole unnecessarily large, but it shouldn't blow em up or anything. So I'm not speaking from experience, so take it with a grain of salt. Really a 357 rifle handgun combo might be best due to such a wide range of effects and the low cost of ammo. A 357 in a carbine can take dear quite well from what I understand as it's exceeding 1000+ ft lbs. Maybe more. While a cheap 38 might put out 200 ft lbs in a low power lead loading.

Also if you slip and fall and your rifle goes over a cliff, or into a river, your holstered sidearm should be retained on you, and can still fire all the ammo on your belt ,or in your ammo pouch. I like may 44 mag lever action and revolver combo, usually I'm carrying that for defense against bears and Cougar on my mountain property. The extra velocity of the rifle makes 44 mag pretty impressive and capable of stopping anything I'm going to encounter there, where my revolver is still pretty capable, should there be an issue when the rifle is leaned up against something while you need both hands for some task, or you are taking a pee. If you've ever experienced someone turning up to do some shooting and then finding they grabbed the wrong ammo for one of the guns, that's another strength to using one caliber, of course if you are being really stupid you could end up with no ammo for either gun, but it's pretty easy to stay on track when you just need 44 mag, or 357 mag ammo etc. for your levergun.

Actually, having a rifle and handgun using the same cartridge is a time-proven concept. Part of my emergency prep includes a 9mm AR-15 and a Glock 17. Both use the same mags, too.
@abonynge5 жыл бұрын
The big advantage the Glock mags bring to that equation is that you have the benefit of a reliable 33 round magazine. While in this video his highest capacity was 15. On top of that if you want to venture into less reliable territory, similar reliability to the Marlin he showed, the Glock drum is an option as well with a 50 round magazine.

@Charlie B True, but think about this: Body Armor doesn't cover 100% of the wearer. Have you seen anyone shot in the face? While it's not an immediate kill, it puts them down faster than a torso shot, and is gruesomely painful. And never mind the disfigurement if he survives.
@kevins11144 жыл бұрын
@Charlie B Did you read my entire comment before posting yours? I said the pistol-caliber carbine/pistol is only PART of my survival equipment. My primary defensive rifle is an AR-.308, with a few other ARs for backup, along with a few other handguns, with the 9 mm being the smallest. How many unprepared marauders do you expect to have body armor, anyway? They'll be marauders because they were NOT prepared.
@user-njyzcip4 жыл бұрын
Get a 5.7mm AR and a Five-Seven, problem solved :P
@snowflakecuntreeman39473 жыл бұрын
@Charlie B you know what, I'd be on the fence with this one if our gun laws and my finances were different, but as things stand I'm in the 9mm pistol + carbine squad. First before we argue/debate we need to establish a scenario and the scenario is pretty simple, it's me and my family and friends who are all quite weak and unfit compared to a navy seal. Bugging out and fighting hunting and whatever till society reforms itself or just going deeper into the mountains where less people are whatever tge case may be, weight and versatility are the name of the game. If on the other hand you opt for the "smarter" bug in then weight isn't a issue. Bug out = light equipment and more ammo is a better idea as you don't know for how long you will have to hunt. Bug in = you can stockpile friggen tons of 50cal ammo, whatever your budget can handle. Bug out = you won't find a guy with full body armour roving around in the woods, if you do, well run, it's that simple, you run away he will die from malnutrition and dehydration eventually. Bug in = you are in town and there are more people and probably guys high or desperate enough to strap on some very thick armour who will walk up to you with their buddies providing covering fire and pop you in the head with a 9mm, heck you could be attacked with improvised armored vehicles, bull dozers, the posibilities are endless, so stixk up on that 50cal as i think 5.56 won't help you much and my 9mm will be completely useless. Bug out = 360 rounds on my standard chest webbing with 9mm in, 5.56 drops it down to 180 rounds, weight wise the 9mm setup is a bit heavier though. We are not seals who are super fit and have a go in get out mission, we need to maintain our "survival" and same goes for my opponent or enemy, my tactic of moving out into the mountains has different concerns than yours bugging in has. If you want to bug out with 180 rounds of 5.56 that's fine, i prefer 360 rounds 9mm that are usable in my 2ndary firearm should anything happen to my primary firearm. Also body armour degrades with each shot it takes, so 3 shots in close proximity to one another is going to most probably cause the 3rd or 4th shot to go through, now that's 4 X 9mm rounds to do what 1 5.56 round does yes, but like i said super heavy duty body armour out in the wild? Really? So here we are me and you, you with your 5.56 and full body armour covering neck face the works, what does that look like? How accurate are you looking through a helmet with 2-3 inch glass? Anyway you are walking up to me to kill me and my 9mm rounds don't do jack shit to you, how far are you from me? If you are close i rush you and stab you somewhere as your mobility is total BS, if we are 100 yards appart i just fkn run you will never ever get me. Okay fine, realistically you will have basic body armour and still hiding behind cover, guess what your body armour is behind cover!! Your head is all that's going to stick out! Same with me and in the end it's going to come down to who hits who in the head 1st and argue as much as you want but 9mm vs 5.56 through the head is equally dead. Your logistics amd adaptability is key. Now i don't have money for a bug out container stocked with ammo and food in the mountains, but i do have enough money for a 9mm and a few rounds, beyond that i can shoot more regularly and become more proficient than my competitors because 9mm is cheaper. My personal reasoning is currently law restrictions and funds, a carbine is not really a option (legislation) and the best i can realistically lawfully do right now is a glock with a micro roni as a primary and a glock as a secondary. Also we are possibly facing a looming "ethnic cleansing" scenario much like what happened in Rwanda and my skin tone is outnumbered more than 10 to 1 so escape and evade with guerilla warfare tactics is the way to go and I'm not 100% sure but i think 9mm silences/suppresses better than 5.56 and that could be very handy in a guerrilla warfare situation. I don't think there is a right and wrong tactic, definitely a affective and more effective approach,and i certainly think a 22 is better than a rock and a pointy stick. For my specific scenario communication is more important than what caliber of firearm i go for. My load out will be somewhat as follows. G17 G17 + micro roni (pipe dream to replace it with a AR 9mm that takes glock mags) Long range bolt action rifle with limited ammo (few hoops but a much bigger reality in getting a license for a bolt action than a semi auto).

It's not a terrible idea, but it ends up being a compromise. You either end up with a rifle that's pistol caliber, with shorter range and less power. Or you get a pistol that's rifle caliber and very unwieldy. But having a shorter range rifle isn't as big of a deal as people think. Most people can't hit out to a 1,000 yards and don't need a gun that can.

Obviously a greater muzzle velocity will mean more energy transfer, but that's about it. Where did you find 40-grain 9mm rounds? And you're not going to get 5.56 performance out of them regardless. Less range, less terminal performance, and lesser ability to defeat body armor.

I was just discussing this subject. The scenario I was particularly discussing was couples weapons. With a carbine a girl can comfortably fire a caliber that would not be comfortable for her in a handgun. So along with all the other aspects of this matter you can add that.
@donna300447 жыл бұрын
Michael Lovelace: Generalizations are worthless. You imply that girls don't like or can't handle more powerful cartridges in handguns. I'm a 69 y/o woman who owns -- and regularly shoots a Magnum Research BFR-4570. It performs best with 405 gr. ammo and does not like the 250 gr. stuff. I've had big, strapping, grown men refuse to shoot it. A friend of mine is half my age, petite and very "girly-looking", and she has no problem handling a .45-70 handgun. My point? Gender has nothing to do with ability or desire in shooting sports. My favorite long range hunting weapon? A Weatherby Mk-V in 338 WinMag. My favorite squirrel gun is a Savage bolt in 17 HMR. I shoot what I want, what I like, and what is appropriate to the task.
@michaellovelace38447 жыл бұрын
Generalizations are not blanket statements, but I don't think they're worthless. Of the 4 women I shoot with, none will fire a .357 magnum and all the guys will. If you're comfortable firing a large caliber handgun, more power to you.
@vidard98637 жыл бұрын
Ankle Donna why? What does it matter if the woman has the pistol gun and the guy can't handle it? What does it matter if he is out with his daughter or son? The point is still valid and interesting. Personally for me the value of the combo will always be that if I have a malfunctioning gun I can still use all my ammunition through the other gun, I had never considered the benefit of being able to use the pair with a friend who simply preferred to use a rifle or a pistol.
@NikovK7 жыл бұрын
Generalizations are worthless is a worthless generalization. Concrete is soft when you first pour it and mid-day is as dark as night during a total eclipse. A generalization is not always correct. However generalizations do spare people a lot of time when determining if a car with the right-hand turn signal intends to make a right-hand turn, or if they need a flashlight or sunglasses when going outside.

They wont get too confused on what this ammo box full off rounds are full of, and this other ammo box is full of. Told them to just load them mags up, and have at it. A word here worth paying attention to. If you reload and are using a revolver and let's say a levergun in the same caliber, beware! If you hand load a hot load for your revolver, your rifle might not be able to handle the pressure as loads for revolvers take into consideration the release of gas pressure from the cylinder gap whereas the rifle MAY not be able to handle the pressure as it has a closed receiver. Best to stick to factory ammo as it is generally not loaded to push limits on any firearm. If your going to reload, make sure that the load is the same for both handgun and rifle in the loading data. Hate to see a good rifle ruined or any injury incurred because of this situation... Safe shooting to ya and remember to keep your powder dry...

I mentioned this is a video Paul H. did on Hi-Point quality. I have a Hi-Point .40 S&W pistol and Carbine. They both use the same 10 rd mags. I have both tucked away in my truck with 5 mags and a extra 100 rds. The carbine is great out to 100 yds and is pretty hard hitting. Picked up the pair for a total under $400. Easy to stash because of size and I always have them if I get stuck somewhere.

Some of your commentators in here I question as to what they were watching or listening to. Having the same ammo for both rifle and pistol is one way to go as pointed out by Mr. Harrell. It has some advantages and some disadvantages which he pointed out. In a disaster or SHTF scenario I believe having the same round means a lot. Less you have to look for, less you have to carry, less confusion. I like the same clip idea makes for a cleaner operation and more control over your ammo.

With the magazine B.S. these days I decided I can do all the shooting I want with 357/38 (which I can reload) .. and a Ruger BH, Ruger Match Champion, Marlin 357; and Rossi 45LC and Ruger BH (and I reload 45lc) (yes I have a 1911 and a 39-2 but the rifle/pistol combo is better for all of the reasons mentioned. 30-06 is approaching .60/round reloaded! M1 Carbine (well... ) so 357/38 is the main battery and 45LC is the secondary battery.

I think 357 mag is the best all around choice. I have a Marlin 357 and a Ruger bolt action 357, my buddy has a Henry. With 158 gr hollow points or 200 gr solid lead you can kill wild hogs no problem, so deer and people should be easy. Well, our deer in Florida are small so a 357 will work here anyway.

This topic fascinates me to no end! I can totally see Paul's point, and I myself have made many of the same observations. And I do have a Beretta Storm which I love. BUT...there's always a but..every strength of the pistol caliber carbine is shared and surpassed by true rifle rounds save one, the ability to share ammo. The biggest downside to using the same round in your rifle as you do in your sidearm is that you have the [almost identical] low power of a pistol with all the weight of a rifle. My AR weighs about the same as my Storm yet it's vastly more capable. Still, great video! While the 9mm Storm falls well short of the capabilities of a real rifle it's still a hoot to shoot and a nice little carbine especially at the current prices.

The concept of same caliber pistol and rifle makes sense. I chose .22lr because both pistol and rifle are light, inexpensive, easy to shoot, accurate, and use low-cost ammo. I do not require a large caliber pistol or rifle to defend myself.

Don't usually reply to these except to do a short agreement compliment. However, I will digress from that rule for this one. Since you did this video under DCS I totally agree that a city dweller should upgrade to a long(er) gun from their usual side arm for a SHTF scenario. Having to invest in just one type of magazine and ammo is grand and very realistic. On the other hand, in the old west days, .45 colt in a pistol and rifle was the way to go because supply and supply stops were limited. So, there are old and new reasons to do this; both are very credible. I live in the Rockies, love guns, and have completed many thought experiments for the perfect weapon or weapon combo for my needs. (This video does bring a Beretta Cx4 back into mind as a companion to my 96FS.) I always come back to, gun are tools and specialized tools do the best job. In your tool bag you could just carry one large adjustable wrench and one small adjustable wrench and get most things done but in reality it a lot better to have the right tool for the right job. So, why compromise if you do not have to. Why compromise long distance performance of a rifle with a pistol cartridge or, why have all that wasted energy when firing a rifle cartridge from a pistol? If I am carrying a rifle I want all the long distance capability I can get for the weight. If I am carrying a pistol I do not want to be carrying extra weight of larger cartridges than I can take advantage of. I carry which ever rifle will fit the need and the pistol that will fit its need when I go in the back country. Usually a S&W .460 and .45-70 marlin when I guide other times it may be a Blackhawk .454 and a .30-06 when hunting. In my hometown they manufacturer lever action rifles in S&W .460 and .500 but I can never justify the expense. I'd rather spend my money on tools that do one job well than make performance compromises. On a side note, can you name my hometown with the clues offered? The reason I agree with you there is that sweet spot, the sweet spot of a medium powered pistol cartridge that works well in a hand gun and better in a carbine. A sweet spot that is to big for small game and too small for large game but just right for the two legged variety.

"On the other hand, in the old west days, .45 colt in a pistol and rifle was the way to go because supply and supply stops were limited." That never happened because, strange as it may seem, no one ever made a rifle/carbine in .45 Colt until somewhat recently; not even Colt's own Lightning carbine was available in .45 Colt. .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20 were the main cartridges that were available in both repeater rifles/carbine and revolvers back then. By the way, with .357 Magnum you're not compromising much on the rifle side of things. It obviously won't make for much of a sniper rifle, but from an ~18" barrel, the hotter loads are in the same power range as an AK-47 (7.62 x 39mm).

@alfredsomerville62286 жыл бұрын
The rabbit thing, like most issues involving firearms, is a function of how well the individual can shoot a particular gun. The .450 Marlin for a rabbit is definitely overkill, but if you're good enough to get consistent head shots on such small targets, the head will be blown off but the meat on the body remains.

Hi , just chipping in. I have found myself very happy with my 357 Blackhawk and Henry Big boy chambered in the same. Great points as always. Was pleased to see the Camp Carbines. I have both chamberings. The 45 in particular is almost phenomenally accurate. Years ago i set it up as a home defense gun for my now ex wife, since she didn't like shotgun recoil. Pentax red dot sight and 2 spare mags. Works great. I have lever guns in 357 and 44 also. Years ago i put a Weaver V3 1-3x on the Marlin 357 to validate a concept i had. I jokingly call it the Hillbilly Patrol Rifle. Nice big field of view at 1 or 1.5x, and a huge exit pupil, so it lines up easily with your eye. Works great within the range limits of the cartridge. Used it for reactive steel targets at a coupme of club 2 gun matches. We can't have the Beretta, Taurus or CZ carbines here in Kali because of their appearance.......

The MOST practical reason for having TWO firearms of the same caliber is because if one malfunctions, either temporarily or permanently, you always have something to push ammo out of. NOTHING is more frustrating than having half the equation and finding the answer is in the missing part of the question.

There's no wrong answer if your gun hits the target and works every time. Some pistol calibers are very effective on deer. The .40 being such an effective man-stopper, I bet it does a real number on deer.
