Today we test out a slug called the "Twister". It is a heavy lead slug that fragments into multiple, large pieces on impact. You may remember tests of Twisters with up to 6 petals, and they worked well. But there seemed to be a HUGE difference when the petals are large like these.

Ironically "Low Drag and High Speed" was the name of an album my band Psyco Twister put out back in '91. Expired Meat, Pork Explosion, Super Sonic Waggle, Fragmenting Slug, and Devastating Power were a few of the songs. Sales of the album were a little underwhelming but we did have a decent local following. Mostly toured in the Charlotte & Upstate SC area.

This is one of the oldest Russian bear hunting bullets with 12 gauge smoothbore guns. Its inventor was the governor of the Tver province of Tsarist Russia, Prince Shirinsky-Shikhmatov. Few people will remember him as an official, but as a bear hunter and the author of the bullet of the same name, he remained in Russian history for a long time.

@@rumdog117 I don’t either, especially in Calunicornia. Since they’re not made from exotic materials and are cast in a commercially available mold, they should be ok. Or using 3” hulls with more powder, see how much you can push the envelope for velocity and pressure. More velocity equals more energy transferred.

Woah, now that is a crazy devastating round. The video really made me wonder more about your loading process. I looked and couldn't seem to find a full vid of yours about the loading process. Lots of times some special things you do to get some of the unique stuff to work, but not the whole process. I know there are others on the net, but frankly you give such good clear common sense explanations, I think you would do an amazing job explaining the basics and why. Any chance or other recommendations?

I know Jeff used to go into a bit more detail about his loading process, but KZbin started demonetizing those videos so he stopped. If you look around, though, you can probably find plenty of videos about loading shotgun rounds.

These were loaded perfectly.... even though the pieces did exit the back of the gel block, there wasn't really any energy wasted and they were absolutely devastating. If I were restricted to a shotgun for defense, these rounds would be at the top of my list.

Actually, these could have been bumped up quite a bit with more Longshot powder. 27 grains is well below the recommended starting point of 34 grains for Zveroboy slugs, which are basically the same projectile. I load up to 36 grains, and get some amazing velocities.

Nice slug, the old guys showed me how to cut a # 8 birdshot into a nice slug as well. Cut through the case almost at the bottom of the shot cup and track the cut around the shell to an eighth of an inch from the start of the cut. Works great at 20 yards.
