Mr. Harrel, thank you for making such an amazing tutorial. I picked up my first black powder pistol and its a Ruger Old Army just like yours. Now I know how to safely load it and share that with my kids. Thank you for all the knowledge you've shared over the years and will continue to be shared after you leave us. Thank you. I'll deeply miss you.

While I'm sure the comment is greatly heartfelt and appreciated by Mr. Harrell on his receiving end- I can imagine being spoken to in the past tense and/or as if to reassure him that in your mind he's for certain a goner, possibly hurts somewhere in some way. I can't and couldn't ever speak on his behalf or for anyone else of course- and please forgive me if I'm in the wrong for just feeling the way I do about this sort of thing; but I imagine that even for such an outstanding gentleman of integity like he, with a likeability and strength about his character of men amongst men- even as tough and level-headed with wisdom and great deal of understanding as he is, I can imagine there's the possibility it may not feel very good to read comments posted from viewers such as this one. Reminding him that you're fully prepared and confident that he's on his way out at any time now. The man's still here and breathing, he's a man and Marine amongst so many other truly great things- and I don't doubt that he holds within him the spirit of a fighter. Though the severity or greatness of any situation or thing in all walks of life can be accepted and known by logically thinking minds- a logical way of thinking most could agree would be those of a rational and healthy mindset. To go along with this however- and as hokey as it may sound, there's also a good and rational "heartset" to be had. There can always be hope. Not to be in the slightest over wishfully thinking and living in my own world of wishy-washy routines, or anything at all like that about myself; so please don't get me wrong, but as long as this thing we know as hope is present from our very hearts, this in turn projects outward from any degree or another of our faith from just that. To of which from my own experiences in life, these I know hold great power that can often be vastly underrated by us all in this wild, wild, universe of ours that we're so incapable of beginning to understand... Among so many others out here- Paul's brothers and sisters, his fellow Marines & Sailors, are praying to God each day and night for an ease to the weight he's been carrying to come off his shoulders and be gone from what he's been having to go through. For him remaining here for a longer time in this world, fully recovered and restored as himself just as he always were. We're asking most importantly that if it may be a possibility in and of his will, that he may let Paul stay here with us for some time longer with just an additional number to those of his "long winded anecdotes" 😉. To hell with that dillema he's been fighting with. We're rooting for ya Paul!

@@J-ayJ I get that sentiment but Paul himself, in his latest interviews, has acknowledged himself that his time is short and he knows it. Of course we all hope amd pray he can recover. In Elmer Keith's masterwork SIXGUNS, there is an entire chapter dedicated to C&B revolvers. Although Elmer grew up in the cartridge era, he was trained and used Cap & Ball guns using blackpowder. He extolled those guns as being very good firearms, just slower to reload and a bit more messy to clean. Thanks to Mr. H. and his production crew to remind us of the proud heritage these weapons have into the 21st century.

For those wondering why it takes a .457 ball is that it shaves a tiny bit of lead off the ball when you load it so it makes a tight fit it the chamber. The ball works well because it it soft lead and will expand easily in the target and impart its energy inside the target instead of out behind it.

Funny cause when I was maybe 14 my cousin and I sent away for mail order BP revolvers from Navy Arms. (I think they were in NJ of all places) We filled a cake decorator "syringe" with crisco to fill the front of the cylinder. However, in the winter the crisco became so hard it would not flow, so we skipped it. We were extremely lucky, I saw one clown at the range have all 6 charges go off at once for lack of crisco and it wasn't pretty. When I think we used to ride our bikes with a pound of DuPont BP, a tin of percussion caps bouncing around in a book bag! But back then a school shooting was the trap club practicing!

@toddy25195 жыл бұрын
@@devinpetersen2387 It might be of interest to all that collect or shoot BP guns that Sam Colt didn't use any grease over the chambers on his revolvers. When he demonstrated his revolvers at conventions, or any other display, he would sink one of his models into a pail of water, fully submerged, fully loaded, for the duration of his speeches (approx 45 minutes or so). When finished speaking, the revolver was taken from the pail, wiped off and fired. All chambers would fire, always! There is a lot to be said about using the proper sized ball (or conical) along with properly sized caps! The practice of using grease over the chambers was started by a few folks that used the guns and it wasn't until much later in production that the Colt factory gave a recommendation for its use! If I remember correctly, it was known as cup grease.

Nice video! I'm too broke to buy wonder wads, but I use a small cleaning patch under the ball with some old Thompson/Center Maxi lube gently applied around the .454 balls with a toothpick, so there isn't a huge mess. My Grandfather taught me how to shoot his Grandfather's 1851 Colt. The routine never varied: load the powder in all six chambers, put a wad on top, ram a ball down, then melt a beeswax candle over each chamber. I never understood the purpose of putting beeswax over the loaded chamber, but after my first chainfire I knew that it had to have served a deeper purpose than making the gun smell good. I've had to re-line the barrel and replace most of the internals, but it shoots pretty good for a 170 year old Civil War relic. There's 7 notches on the left side of the grip and 9 on the other, one for each Union soldier my GreatGreatGreat Grandfather dispatched during his service.

That's why my caps never seated right. Thank you that was a very helpful video. You really simplified shooting a cap and ball revolver. Can't wait to take out my dad's 44.

My club is full of older shooters who are "no longer allowed" to shoot in other clubs because they need optical or physical assistance - loading stands - specifically! Blackpowder shooting shouldn't be only a young guy's game - so we welcome these older folks (male and female) and don't force them to load from a possibles bag ( or shooting coat) and we don't have range walk only shoots. You can learn a lot from these guys and don't have to listen to - too many resume lists.
@PaulHarrell8 жыл бұрын
+3buffalo13 We allow some of our shooters to use scooters and so on if they can't walk the trail. That's a good point about "range walk only shoots." We should add an event or two for people who don't get around so well any more.

+Weedus That's sad. Even in Britain, nobody cares if you're shooting on your own land, just so long as you aren't bothering your neighbours.
@AtlasJotun4 жыл бұрын
@Weedus It's often public shooting ranges that take the form of a berm out in the woods here in the U.S. I was just out in the sticks today, tilling the earth with lead :D However, I'm also a member of a large gun club which contains an indoor pistol/rifle range, observation seating area just behind the range, classrooms, a cafeteria, and a retail sales area for arms, gear and munitions. I frequently spend 4-6hrs. there with shooting buddies, as well as taking classes from time to time. A 1,000ft. range would be lovely to have at your disposal; I hope regulations for setting them up change in your favor!

This is what I like about Paul his videos are always relevant. My mother just gave me her reproduction 1858 Remington and she hasn’t shot it since the mid seventies. I was 4 or 5 at the time. I’ve never shot a muzzle loader of any kind but I knew I could find something about it on Paul’s channel. Now I just need the accessories so I can actually take it to the range.

I have been thinking about buying a cap and ball revolver. I missed my chance for a Ruger Old Army unless I get lucky. I had been thinking about a .44 Remington style, but recently started to reconsider a .36 Colt style. I would enjoy seeing your thoughts on .36 vs .44, and Colt vs Remington. My .32 percussion rifle is more accurate than my .22LR!
@PaulHarrell7 жыл бұрын
The .44 more powerful than the .36 and in my opinion a better choice. I find the Remington replicas to be more reliable and accurate than the colt replicas.

I'm in the UK so we're obliged to shoot cap and ball revolvers if we want to maintain a semblance of 'proper' pistol shooting. It's either that or those absurdly long barrelled versions of modern cartridge revolvers with a stupid balance weight on a stick thingies permanently coming out of the back of the grip. It is what it is. I don't have time for that old timey fiddle-faddle when loading. I could have got off eighteen shots in the time Paul loaded and shot his. :) So I pre-measure the charge into individual plastic test tubes with stoppers on in bulk before going to the range. You can buy them by the hundreds for pennies from China. I'm cheap. I know a guy who took it to the next level and made a 'speed-loader' out of these things for BP. I don't use a stand. But as I have a Remington New Model Army repro (Pietta) it's easy to switch out the cylinder and load on a press. I press the caps home with a thumb (shock horror!) with the cylinder off. They won't go off - I've put many many hundreds of rounds through my revolver without incident. They will seat properly and fire reliably that way. Whilst I'm at it I load a spare cylinder. Job done. I fully recommend making your own felt wads - pure cotton felt soaked in beeswax, and tallow mix. I make a thicker wad than store bought - about twice as thick. This takes up the space better as I download a tad to reduce recoil. I also cast my own lead balls. I cast .457 balls for the .454 cylinder. That allows for slight shrinkage and guarantees a nice ring shaving for a proper seal. It's a peace of mind thing. Stainless steel is more forgiving than ordinary steel. If I've shot a substitute powder I take the grips off and just stick it in the dishwasher! :)

Yes. And even BP revolvers using metallic cartridges for a vintage pistol under S.7 if you have slot (permission) on your licence.
@barnabywild22156 жыл бұрын
I've tidied up my comment. Briefly s.7 of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 permits ownership of handguns of historical interest. www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1997/5 It isn't difficult - just a bit of a paper chase. Some of it is rather intrusive. First off you need to be either a full member of a club or own or have permission to access a decent bit of land to safely shoot over - this is to demonstrate 'good reason' for wanting firearms. For example sporting use or pest control. It's tiresome but you need to demonstrate good reason for each and every firearm - and you need to list the calibres and amount of ammo you wish to purchase. Unlike in the States where you might purchase on a whim you need to think out your needs beforehand as you can only purchase what's listed on your FAC So your application could look like this: 7.62 x 39 rifle - target shooting on approved ranges 400 rounds 7.62 x 54R rifle - target shooting on approved ranges 400 rounds .223 rifle - target shooting on approved ranges 400 rounds .357 / .38 rifle - target shooting on approved ranges 400 rounds .44 rifle - target shooting on approved ranges 400 rounds .44 muzzle loading revolver target shooting on approved ranges Semi-auto is only available in .22 rim fire over here You need secure gun cabinets for storage bolted to a solid wall in your house. You need to be of good character. You need to be able to provide two referees to affirm you're a fit person to own firearms You need to give permission to the police to ask your doctor if there are any issues that would bar you from being entrusted with firearms - mental illness, depression, epilepsy, alcohol or drug use. That sort of thing. £88 for the application fee - returnable if you're turned down. Then you fill out a form, send it off with the fee, and wait for a firearms officer to contact you to arrange a visit. He or she will make an appointment to see you at your home, check out your security, discuss your reasons for wanting firearms and generally sound you out to check you're legit. Assuming there are no issues you'll eventually receive your FAC in the post. If you plan on shooting black powder rather than substitutes you need to get an additional explosives license - but for shooting purposes that is free. Obviously criminals disregard all of the above so the hoops are just for the law-abiding to jump through.

Barnaby Wild I wish England still had decent gun laws, or decent laws in general. Most of my family is from that country and I would like to live there, but the current sociopolitical climate and gun control dissuade me.
@bushwhackedonvhs6 жыл бұрын
Barnaby Wild if you lived on a rural property, could you carry a cap and ball revolver in case you were to encounter animals? So basically, what I'm asking is, do cap and ball revolvers fall under the criteria to be used as pest-control weapons in the UK
@Molach1016 жыл бұрын
Mason Munts - I live on a rural property in the UK and I think I would find it difficult to justify to the police that I intend on using a cap and ball revolver to shoot rabbits and foxes with when all my neighbours have .22s and shotguns for that purpose. The biggest animal I will encounter at my home is a fallow or red deer and I believe it would be illegal to use a cap and ball revolver (or carbine) to shoot it with as the law would consider it underpowered for that larger deer species. At the very least some kind of centre-fire cartridge of .240+ is legal, larger depending on the deer, so in practise I would use something like a .308. If you want a cap and ball revolver you ought to join a shooting club that covers that discipline so you have some kind of justification to give to the police. Handguns are also available for humane dispatch of deer and farm animals but again there are lots of restrictions about that - if you get one you're going to be using it for that express purpose. Ask yourself what you actually want to do with the gun and just be honest with the police about it, don't try to make something up about how you need a .44 Colt Walker to shoot rabbbits with.

Look at the difference in smoke between the modern cartridges and black powder around 13 minutes in. Yeah compared to that, I guess it is "smokeless powder."

Your comments with regards to "seating the caps" using the hammer gave me pause to think. At no point am I questioning your acumen with the cap and ball revolver however, the action of seating the caps by manipulating the hammer, seems to invite a unintended discharge. The simple act of using a small block of wood (a piece of clothespin) to seat the caps would be less prone to a unintended fire and a bit safer.
@bushwhackedonvhs6 жыл бұрын
snoman003 I use really hard CCI caps and I usually just point the gun in a safe direction and cock it and pull the trigger six times to seat the caps. Usually I don't get more than one going off. There's no reason for me to push them on because I don't go to a range, I just shoot in the woods.
@bushwhackedonvhs6 жыл бұрын
Upside to this method, is that I rarely get a dud cap because the hammer will usually seat them really nicely
@merrillflint67726 жыл бұрын
I've owned a Colt Navy reproduction for several years and I've never seated the caps with the hammer.

I’m new to this but I’ve seen more than one person just pinch the cap before putting it on so it sticks better. They crimp the edge.
@Strutingeagle7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great video. I always seat undersize caps with the hammer so they will seal better and so they don't fall off. I did not know pushing on with the hammer by hand would set them off till now. I always point down range anyway but have never had it happen yet. Many people that make the videos have misfires because the caps are not seated well enough. You are the first person I have seen seat them with the hammer.
