I live in an older mobile home. 2X4 studs, aluminum siding on the outside, wood paneling on the inside, 3 1/2" of insulation in between. I literally made a through-penetration for a CATV drop by putting a large Phillips screwdriver against the outside of the house and smacking it with the heel of my hand. As the MH Park that I live in is full of similar homes, missing an intruder with a 9mm could literally make a few of your neighbors very unhappy with you. Something to bear in mind. If it is poor cover, it is also a perfect environment for an over -penetration issue if you return fire.

The Mythbusters tested how bulletproof water is. Basically, the higher the velocity of the bullet, the faster the water stopped it. That explains why the 9mm went through the canned food and the water jugs but the 5.56mm didn't. With modern firearms, 5' of water was enough. That means swimming 3' down will do the job (because of the oblique angle) unless the shooter is directly above you.

So the moral of the story for Walmart shopping is this...... 1. Keep one eye on the cereal, the other on the front door , with your ears tuned in for gunshots and screaming 2. IF you hear screaming &/or gunshots, make sure you can slip off your shoes fast. This will help you run much faster and quieter. 3. The most important..... Know where the automotive section is. Bullets have a harder time going through car batteries than cereal. If you can’t make it, duck into the camping isle. They have nice soft body bags.

This scenario has played out in my head and even though I Carry the best formula for survival would be to grab whomever you're with and others find the exit to the back of the store/docking area and get out. Always look for an avenue of egress whenever you are in a store due to shooter, fire or earthquake.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that concealment is useless if it's not cover. Untrained bad guys tend to not shoot at something they can't see. Fight or flight monkey brain kicks in for them. No stats to back this up but it's clear in every single robbery and shooting video where someone is behind almost anything...except drivebys..

@@solitudessilentgroove I know Rick over at think like a cop has. Hilarity ensues that he fears the cops more than assailants...coming from a 30 year veteran cop. I think the summary is basically if you're gonna act do it before cops get there, and don't give your description to dispatch at all...only the suspects. They'll always ask what you're wearing but just keep reiterating the suspect is so and so wearing such and such and get off the line. Dispatch always wants to keep callers on the line but it's usually not in your best interest. For the clothing discription reason being a cop flying lights and sirens with loads of radio traffic can easily mix up the two if the typically incompetent dispatchers haven't already.

When I was working as security, they had us follow the "run, hide, fight" rule. You should never assume that security is there for YOU, security is an insurance policy for the company to have a witness and someone to relay information to the police. Unless the security guard has a gun on them, they are just as useless as any other unarmed customer would be. They don't get paid to take care of the same issues that cops get paid to take care of. Its just a sad truth.

There are some great vids showing bullet effectiveness in water (and fluids). Turns out that Water becomes far more effective as a bullet stop the faster the projectile is moving. High power rifle rounds get shredded immediately when going into water but slower handgun rounds travel further. Some years ago I worked at a business where all the employees were required to watch 'Run, Hide, Fight.' At the time I thought it was very unlikely that I would ever find myself in that position. However, with a couple of weeks I saw on the news that at a business a few miles down the highway from where I lived a former employee of another business returned to that business with a gun and tried to kill his former boss. I realized that it was indeed possible that I might find myself in that situation. We were not allowed to carry a gun where I worked, but I started carrying a small 9mm pistol in my pocket just in case I might need it. No one at work ever knew I had it, because I never needed to take it out. Thank you.

I hate the "Run, Hide, Fight" video mainly for the "hide" part. Who gets out of a mass shooting by hiding? Seems to me the folks who hide just die slightly later than those who don't. Run if you can, absolutely. But fighting shouldn't be the last resort, if you can organize with others to mount some sort of fight, and you can't run, fighting is a whole lot more likely to let at least somebody go home than just cowering under a desk and waiting to be killed. I understand why business don't tell you that though - they don't want to be liable for you being a hero and getting yourself killed. Still, infuriating all around.

@@mcsupersport Building insulation works by keeping a static layer of air in place. It basically prevents heat flow by convection. To achieve that there is very little mass in the insulation. My guess would be that you are right and it would not offer significant cover against ammo that is likely to be used. Unless proven wrong I`d treat that as concealment.

It reminds me of one of my dad's old friends when they were going in and out of the seige of Sarajevo through sniper alley, they had a pickup they lined the back with tool boxes full of scrap metal and old tools as armour, when he first rode in the driver said "Don't worry mate, they're sh*t shots" apparently they weren't as they were able to hit the vehicle doing 70mph a few times, the most dangerous bit he said was getting into the city there was an immediate turn and keeping the speed up till last second before the turn without tipping the boxes of metal on the blokes was difficult

I was just in one of their stores yesterday, and I kid you not, I saw the fattest heifer I had ever seen. She was easily at least 600 pounds (probably more), and was barely able to walk, thanks to a shopping cart she held onto. Of all areas of the store, yep, you guessed it, she was in the bakery department, and her cart was a mountain full of junk food. I saw some bags of potato chips also in the cart, so I knew she had recently came from the snack lane. Anyhow, her backside was so huge and wide that it could be used as a couch/sofa, easily seating 4 people. That was truly a lard a**.

My guess is the bullet ricocheted a lot more perhaps due to the velocity of it? Just basically rattled through everything instead of penetrating it. People think higher calibers automatically means deadlier but if you got shot with a .45 vs a 5.56, chances are the 45 would kill you much sooner and much easier than a 5.56 whose exit cavitation is literally nearly a perfect hole. All of this obviously likewise depends upon what IS being penetrated, meat or bone, both? Etc. hell even quantity of body fat.

The bullet passes thru, but it seals/heals almost instantly. Shooting an Xmas fruitcake and neutralizing it are two almost entirely different things I recommend shotgun slugs or 00 buck. Must do massive damage that helps prevent the reformation. Then dump cheap brandy on the remains and light it up. Then move away to avoid the toxic fumes. Hope this helps.

I was surprised by the effectiveness of water at stopping FMJ 5.56 projectiles. I would've expected those results with JHP or other expanding ammo. Paul's videos are often educational in the oddest ways.

Water is only intermittently stocked atm. I suggest that you don't look for cover/concealment unless you have no option. RUN for the nearest hinged door to the outside of the damn building.

Most helpful and informative about what does/doesn't offer protection in grocery store. Not seeing the video I would assume that canned goods would be the best cover. In any event given the chance I will try to make it out the back when the shooting starts.
