This was a pre arranged 'while you wait' job for an owner who had been experiencing break downs with electronic ignition fitted. After speaking with him about his troubles, I talked him into reverting to points ignition, fitted and timed it and then took this road test. The existing ignition coil was used again.

G'day Paul, point are best, your right road side repairs no problem, in my tool roll on the Bullet 500 l carry a set of points, condenser and backing plate with screw set, never used just for incase, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

I liked the old Sparkrite systems that kept the points but allowed you to switch back over to the original condenser system if it went wrong, their big advantage was absolutely no contact wear or pitting so a set of points could last almost forever. On the subject of dodgy floating bushes I made an aluminium one for a tuned model G Clipper I had it worked very well, the prototype floating bush was tested on a model LF in the 1934 TT that too was made of aluminium, Mike Hailwoods IOM Ducati 900 reputedly also used aluminium floating bushes.

@@grantbaker3336 I have read that Mike Hailwood's 1961 Senior TT Norton used a Jaguar D type con rod with a plain big end

Much better audio on this video. On many of your previous offerings I find it hard to hear your commentary. The Enfield sounds good too.

Lovely video. Geared down considerably is an understatement I would say. Took me back to 1973 when the roads in Kent were that uncrowded

My old guzzi 1000 has decided to drop firing on one cylinder. It's been retro fitted years ago with a Rita system. I checked the plugs, coils, leads, all working. Having a spare dizzy for it with points I've transferred the bob weights, cam, fitted new springs and temporarily rigged electrics to run. It now fires both cylinders. I will need to strobe it to get the timing right and buy a set of 12V coils. Can also get rid of the big alloy box that's never had a good place to reside. When these boxes to wrong they certainly stop you in your tracks. I much prefer points.

Every electronic ignition I used on my Moto-Guzzi Le Mans 2 (including the Rita) left me miles from home with absolutely no warning ! Points are just fine .

The old points gave you a warning when things were starting to go wrong & could be fettled to get you home in most cases . I never had any problems with CDI & bob weight advance or fully electronic on Japanese bikes . Never owned a Brit bike , but was always told they are more reliable ,if fitted with a good aftermarket electronic ignition system , obviously not in some cases as you have found to be the case .

That menace is alive and well, it is the sheepdog from 'Bantam Hill' who is sadly no longer with us. I liked him.

I had a crank mounted electronic ignition on my 612 bullet. Was having real trouble getting it to run and start consistantly. It took the timing off the ignition pulses from one of those self-exciting coils and was supposed to have the advance in the electronics. Wasn't cheap either. When I finally strobed it, it was all over the place at low revs then even worse on advance, wouldn't settle at a fixed point. I also went back to points with stronger springs to hold the advance back a touch until the revs are higher and a lucas 2-wire alternator. I think the ideal setup would be a much simpler crank mounted ignition with a programmable advance using a hall effect sensor and a magneto to supply the power. That's a lot of money to spend to fix something that's working though.

It sounds great P.H. 👋👋 I follow another KZbinr who done exactly the same & claims it is much better. I can't fault my Boyer Ignition though. I had to tweak it a bit but it must be pretty damn near as i no longer get any kickbacks etc. Those Boyer's sre no good though if your battery is dead, it needs 12v to energise it. You can kick it as many times as you like & try bump starting it but it still won't go without 12v so i get why some revert back to points .🤔

The bike sounds and goes well. I was just about to comment that the gearing on that machine seems very low, when you mentioned it! Not sure I could put up with the gearing for road use though.

That bike pulls like ten men and sounds good to boot. Nice that you kept it spinning, rather than slogging along on the torque. Do you think these points things might catch on?
