Classics are always the best. Back in the day I believe people threw out the brushes and the great double edge safety razors because the newer ones came out which saved them time and were more efficient. People later on went back to the Classics because they realized what their parents and grandparents failed to see. That wet shaving like that was the best most enjoyable way to shave and would become a huge hit again! A Chore turned hobby! Well done! Much love to our elders and loved ones of the past!

Hi Paul, Great video I remember the first time that I helped myself to my dad’s Old Spice aftershave. When I was about 11 years old, one morning as we all about to leave the house my mother must have commented that he had been a bit heavy with the aftershave and he replied that he had not used any that morning. Only then did they realise that I had been at it!! Funny how after all these years you can recognise that smell, I think it’s wonderful. I recently got my father back into DE safety razor shaving, loaned him a TTO razor, gave him a selection of blades, bought him a new best badger brush and some Proraso (green) soap. Within 3 months he had completely wrecked the brush, It looked like he had been using as a scrubbing brush, bit of bad do when you have to teach your dad how to look after his gear. Similar to yourself my mum used to buy his shaving supplies so it was pretty much the same Palmolive / Old Spice combination year after year. I am now able to give him lots different soaps to try which he likes and he is enjoying his shaves these days. Anyway have a good week, look forward to Wednesday's instalment. Keep up the good work. Cheers Steve

I liked your little speech about how new life is being brought into this old form of shaving. I'm 16 and I got into wet shaving a few months ago, and its all I've ever done. I used a disposable to get rid of my preteen moustache but as soon as more came on I switched to DE razors

This one had me in stitches Paul. When I was a boy my dad was still using an unnamed DE razor and shaving brush issued to him by the RAF when he did national service in 1946/7. Always used Palmolive and Old Spice. And yes, the "smellovision" worked for me!

Ah memories of watching my dad shave in the bathroom as a kid. He used every model of fancy gillette multi bladed thing but I still enjoyed watching him shave. I've of course picked up the DE and I know I'll teach my son when he's old enough to shave. He enjoys watching me in the morning shave and likes to have a bit of the lather on his face (I usually just grab the little foamy bit from loading and put it on his cheeks he likes the feeling). Honestly tickles me pink to see him standing there enthralled as I lather up shave and put on my A/S balm and splash. I can see him when he's older liking Old Spice or Aqua Velva as I usually use one or the other. I'll have fond memories of seeing him keenly watch me shave for many years :)

+PaulHFilms, WOW WOW WOW.. Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul. I've been looking forward to the weekend shave and you put this up. My father and yours were obviously from the same era. My mum walked five miles to do the shopping twice a week, my dad didn't do that sort of stuff and never ever used anything with the word "moisturiser" on the side. My father used the same razor as the one you've used today, the Palmolive shave stick and then used old spice too (which is also in my cabinet). And he also used to do the thing with tissue paper which I also do myself, which makes my kids laugh. I bloody love it. The sad thing is that my mum gave away my Dad's razor to charity after my he passed away, but I'm now going to keep an eye-out online and get one of those Gillette razors and take a trip down memory lane. Paul, this is my favourite video that you've posted. Many, many thanks for the trip down memory lane. And, a big thanks to Mrs. H for Ivy and all the best of luck to Wales in RWC2015. Great trip down memory lane, bro. I think most of us remember watching our father's daily ritual when we were young, waiting for the day when we could emulate him. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated that video. My father passed away early in my life and - as far as I can recall - only ever used an electric razor. Delving into your memories of your father shaving was something quite special therefore. Say, did your dad do three pass shaves plus pick ups as well? Looking at the very far and in between shaving manuals from back then it was in fact very surprising to learn that it was recommended do a two pass shave (wtg/xtg mix by moving the razor diagonally on pass 1 and going atg on pass 2), not a three passer. Anyway, just curious. Thank you for sharing your memories!
@shave-a-thon34159 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your dad was a very cool guy! Even he would have liked the Arko Ice Mint balm I've previously recommended! You should have emulated the shave with the ciggy out of the corner of your mouth. It would have probably added another 10 minutes with all the extra coughing you would be trying to suppress, but would have made the shave more realistic! (I'm assuming you're a non-smoker). GSB - my favorite Semogue 820 - will be buying that or 830 or both if someone tells me there's a difference. Palmolive soap - definitely want to buy. 49 pence = 75¢ in the US It's another one not sold here. It would be even cheaper in the UK if they would ever produce it in quantities for sale in the US I don't understand why Colgate Palmolive just doesn't import these things. Old Spice Original - need to buy more instead of USA version of the sweeter "Classic". Paul - you have to order the Old Spice Musk aftershave from India along with the lime, musk and original shaving creams! Can you reply with the manufacturuer of of the Old Spice Original? Some are made by P&G in Germany and others rea, "Proctor & Gamble , UK. Product of the EU". The India version of OS Original is now made by Rubicon for P&G. India versions that were made in 2012 and earlier were made by MCPL under license from Shulton and P&G. The sales of Old Spice have exploded since P&G added a bunch of sweeter (inferior IMHO) scents. It's been said that every manufacturer of men's fragrance would have liked to have a version of the original scent in their history. Old Spice is just synonymous with the term "shaving". Gillette Swim Twist razor - I only can dream about that one at this point! I think that when you said, "I'm coming to my favorite bit in a minute, and you know what that is, don't you" @11:46, your entire shaving audience sang along with you to the refrain of, "the pickups"! Your discussion @ approx. 12:30 about how most people hated shaving years ago still holds today because most are still using the cartridge razors. I never looked forward to shaving until I started watching videos on KZbin and read the shaving forums. I then started DE wet shaving and began to spend a few minutes picking out the shaving "hardware and software" for the day! Any new unopened razor, soap, cream, fragrance, or untried blade brand just adds to the fun. Remember, this is after I shaved for nearly FOUR DECADES with an Atra, then a Sensor and then a Mach 3. Gillette sold me on the Fusion and finally lost me when the cartridge prices became ridiculous. I wonder if 40 years from now, people will go bonkers when they see a "vintage Fusion Power" razor being auctioned w/o AAA battery? Do you think there will still be AAA batteries in 40 years? LOL! You're so right in saying what's become a chore is now a hobby! Those who've turned their hobby into an online vocation and are making a living from it are very lucky indeed!
@PaulHFilms9 жыл бұрын
+Shave- a-thon It probably would have been heavily edited if I used a smoke in the video..lol...Dad's were the masters of it...in regards to the Old Spice Original, some do say the new version or versions depending who makes it ( all very confusing)...is different to the "original"...Old Spice made by Shulton... I do have the Old Spice shaving cream and have used the lime version in a previous video, very nice too....the original soap is going for big money online and that's if you can get it...seems to be more available in America these days.... in future they may very well be solar charged razors...lol..who knows.. My Old Spice was made by Proctor & Gamble UK.. All the best Paul.

You did your Dad proud with this one Paul! My Dad used Palmolive in the tube, and luckily I saved his brush over the years and use it now. I remember when I started shaving some 36 years ago with my Dad's razor (which I still own and use), we both used Palmolive stick. Unfortunately can't find this stick here locally. Got myself the cream, scent is close but according to my memory not exactly the same. My Dad would also load his brush from the stick and so did I. Nowadays when I use a stick I just pass it on my wet face and do face lathering.

+PaulHFilms It is indeed. Funny story about your Dad and since I use cigarrette paper to roll my smokes (since I was 13 ...), I'll give that a try next time! :-) My Dad also used Old Spice and I used Brut (the dark green plastic bottle). I bought both again because of those memories but even though it comes close the scent is not exactly the same anymore, especially the Old Spice changed over time. I bought the Original (bottle is different from yours) but despite that it's called Original they must have changed the formula because it's not the same as from the 80's. The original Original was even sweeter and didn't like it back then because it would make me smell like Dad! :-)

Yes Paul another great Sunday morning shave. it did take me back . I especially remember the bits of paper on the face. it was old spice shaving soap and old spice after shave for my Dad. Do you have any Old Spice soap or cream? I would love to see you use that if you can. Thanks again Paul for another happy memory and great way to start my Sunday off.

Hey Paul. It is nice how you remember of your father. Still watching your videos everytime. If you like the scent of Old Spice Original and you would like to try a similar fragrance try M7 by Yves Saint Laurent. Has a very similar scent in my opinion so if you have a chance to try that one please do. Hope you are doing great. Cheers mate, Adam.

Thx so much sharing! Really enjoyed the story behind the shave :-)) Especially the part of the moisturizing cream, and that little "kissy poo"! Abs bril! I had a really good laugh for a bit after that one! Also, totally agree with John James: Palmolive is one of my favs as well. Ik combine the stick and a small dab of cream in my shaving bowl...unreal how nice a lather they provide. I do cut the stick in thin slices and put them in a container. I prefer bowl lathering ;-) Cheers again m8! and keep m coming ;-)

+D. Sparks Glad you enjoyed it, thanks, yes the kiss..lol...Palmolive is great isn't it....and it is nice to bowl lather...there is something about creating it isn't there....all the best....Paul.

i really don't think you can fault a decent bore brush paul, i would say a decent badger brush is more for creams... however i would think for exfoliating the skin a bore is still the way to go...with cream or soap . i get a decent lather from bore with cream or soap... just as long as it has a decent stiff backbone.. in my opinion the bore should be as short as possible ?
@PaulHFilms9 жыл бұрын
+technicaly brilliant The boar brush is great, especially the Semogue range I find, the shorter the knot the stiffer it will probably be yes, but that is down to your personal taste of course.
@technicallybrilliant27609 жыл бұрын
so it looks like the semogue , some guy stated that the boars where actually made of pig hair.... hence i was leaning more toward the omega ... interesting indeed. thanks for the input paul , take care

Great video Paul. One of my favorites of yours. I use Palmolive Classic with Palm Extract as a cream. Is the shave stick a similar scent? Will have to go and find one now, LOL.

Great video as usual Paul, I love old spice and Palmolive, do you know of a shave cream that smells like old spice, strange as that may sound, but I can't find old spice shave cream in New Zealand and wondered if you know of a cream of similar scent. The same with Palmolive, that I can get but would love an aftershave of similar scent. Mind you proraso green works well with Palmolive. All the best, keep it up.
@PaulHFilms9 жыл бұрын
+Owen Parratt Thanks, you can still get Old Spice shaving cream, but mainly from India, were it is made now, but it's not really the same as the original, the soap can be found on eBay, but for rediculous money...as for aftershaves, not sure of any which are near these scents...all the best....Paul.

Hey Paul, huge fan of the channel. I particularly like the vintage products. Just wondering where you pick up the Old Spice in that exact bottle that you've got there? I can only ever seem to find the brilliant white with red diagonal stripes here in Ireland. Cheers for any info!

Many thanks John, I was lucky enough to spot a seller on eBay who was selling original Old Spice in decanters, and the cologne along with the aftershave too....so just lucky on the day I expect.....all the best...Paul.

Question: Do you shave twice a week or do you only film your shaves twice a week? I love using a brush to create lather. It is so much more rewarding than using canned foam. For one, the lather doesn't dry out on my face like Barbasol usually would, because I can just dip the brush in water to hydrate my lather if need be. I agree that certain blades perform better after 1-2 uses. Personna Lab Blues are pretty sharp as well, and I find them unforgiving in my more aggressive razors. A few shaves in, however, they become smoother.
@PaulHFilms9 жыл бұрын
+KingofWisdom I try to just shave twice a week for the videos, but sometimes have to shave in between....creating the lather is great isn't it, makes it all worth while too....thanks and all the best....Paul.

A great video PaulI remember my dad using a Gillette Slim razor, with Gillette shaving cream with Old Spice to finish off. He also used toilet paper to mend the cuts. The problem was dad used to get all the stubble off in one pass. Personally, since I started wet shaving. I prefer using a less aggressive razor, as it is about gentle hair reduction and gives me better results by performing just 3 or 3 passes.
