My first three Warhammer 40K games ever, was in the city that I was currently attending University, I was playing my recently bought 800 point Astra militarum army as a thousand point army and you could reasonably expect how poorly that went, I had a blast playing the tournament though, my three opponents for that they were as followed grey knights, space marines, chaos knights, and ever since that tournament I have not won any of my 40K games but I still enjoy playing from time to time
@va5780Ай бұрын
Amazing how small the world is. I just got into Warhammer because the city in which I currently attend college has a tabletop gaming community. My go-to army is *probably* going to be 980 Chaos Daemons, maybe 990 points World Eaters. We'll see

Honest to god, I want to reference your video from here out to help people realize that most tournaments are filled with awesome people and are a blast to play at. There's so much negativity in the internet-world about tournaments and tournament players and it's almost ENTIRELY either not true, blown out of proportion, or perpetuated by people that maybe ARE the type of people that cause the issues they claim to suffer from. So glad you had such a great time! And man, that Tech-Marine really DOES look amazing! Wow. You should do an episode about Steve! (show him this comment and SUFFER, mwahahaha!)
@PaulIsBadAtStuffАй бұрын
I imagine it's like a lot of things in life where one negative will heavily outweigh all the positives. If you go to a restaurant many times but then have one bad meal you may be less likely to return despite all the good. I reckon one bad game could turn someone off entirely to avoid that negativity again, which is a real shame.

Glad you had fun at your first tournament! I've found that the competitive community for 40k is a lot friendlier and more wholesome than people give it credit for, I've enjoyed all five tournaments I've gone to. Two of them were two-day five-game events and those ones definitely were more competitively minded than the one-day ones, but honestly the cheat code there is to intentionally lose your first game, because then you get matched against people who also lost their first game, which instantly sorts the most competitive and skilled people away from you, lol. When you get sorted into the loser's bracket you encounter the "dads who are excited to play more games in 2 days than they have in 2 months" crowd who are some of the most chill 40k fans out there.
@TheCommunistColinАй бұрын
Other tips for a 2-day event if you go: Snacks, water, and pain medicine. Seriously, bring a bottle of tylenol or something and pop those like candy. You will be SORE on day 2. Bring simple quick food like dried fruit and granola bars to avoid making a sticky mess for handling minis and for keeping your brain energized and fueled. And water, water, water!

my first and currently only tournament under my belt was a 2v2 tournament where i played with my friend. necrons and imperial guard. our first round we were tabled by orks and ultra marines that were some of the best painted models in the tournament. the players were awesome to play with. our second round had us win by 30 points and just barely. we faced orks and imperial guard. the dice was not kind to our opponents but we had an equal match and plenty of fun..... then the last team was orks and necrons..... the necron player was *that* guy. if it favored us, he had to argue with rules, basic rules, he had alomst an entire army bought from ebay and was running the meta lists, it was, rough. had dice that made it really hard to see the number on the die and was really fast at collecting dice. then he threw a hissy fit when him and his friend only got 6th place. me and my friend got 9th out of 18. overall it was still alot of fun and i would go to a tournament again only wished we never faced the e-bay necron

My first tourney was at a 2v2 beginners match last year. We played 3 games, I was running my Guard and my buddy was playing his Necrons. Game one was us vs Ultramarines+Orks. We got *trounced.* I made a massive tactical mistake, not realizing we were using "True Line of Sight" and that my brick of a crassus would block my buddy's Anti-Tank destroyers. They were still very understanding and fun to play against. Also the Ultramarine player has some *gorgeously* painted models. Lost that game *Hard.* Game 2 was us vs Guard+Orks (there were a lot of Orks at this tourney) Game 2 was very fun back and forth. I made up for my mistake with the crassus and held a mid field objective for the entire game, and pushed the opponent's Orks off the center objective *twice.* All in all, was a very fun game. Actually won it, partially because I got my Bullgryn's into the Guard Player's backline and was causing havoc with my dumb muscle. Very fun. Game 3... fucking game 3 Orks+Necrons Not too bad, Ork player was fun to bounce off of. One of his squiggoth rider squads could not manage to kill a single Scout Sentinel, so that was funny. But the Necron Player. His entire list was "What us meta today?". Nightbringer, wraiths and destroyers, and 2 doomstalkers. All with different paintjobs. Fucker brought an Ebay Meta List to a friendly, beginner tournament. Simple to say that we lost that game, unfortunately. Lost the tournament, 1 to 2. It would have been a *great* time, if the fucking last game hadn't been "Let's just bring all the meta stuff that got nerfed 3 days later".

this was a lovely watch while I assembled some Heavy Intercessors (funnily enough, for a 40k event next year where I'm dipping my toe back into the game), thank you for sharing! You asked for advice, and I couldn't help but pick up on your issue with the volume at events. I've been attending tournaments for over a decade, and no venue has ever fully solved this I'm afraid. Hey, if you think it's rough there, all I'm saying is try doing it on a world champs table against someone with ropey English. But, something you can do to help with it is sign language. No, really. While your opponent may not hear you saying 'I wound on threes!', holding up three fingers will give them a good clue as to what you're doing. With more complex rules, it's more difficult, but remember that you likely have a shared understanding of the game, so if you sign something reasonable for 'twin-linked' while pointing at the rule, they'll get it the next time you do it. I have Auditory Processing Disorder (in-one-ear-out-the-other-syndrome as I like to call it) and this method makes it way easier for both parties to be understood whatever the environment :) All the best in your future events, and hope I've helped!
@PaulIsBadAtStuffАй бұрын
The sign language is a great idea! I hand gesture a lot but not in a very useful way so even just holding up 3 fingers would be useful. Fortunately it wasn't that loud compared to what I assume a massive tournament would be!

Great video! Can't wait for part 2. I've had some great tournament experiences in the past. Both through the two-day GTs and the one-day events at LGS. My favorite memory will always be somehow fumbling my way into 10th place at a 30+ person event, subsequently winning an award at my *first ever* 2 day GT in the summer of 2022. But I'd like to make a suggestion for your next tournament. Take a look at what your local community is doing. From my personal experience, I made a lot of good friends through my LGS, and I wouldn't be nearly as deep into the hobby as I currently am without them. So I'd like to see you check out what your local area has going on before you go all the way to a 2-day event. Even if you don't make content about it.

First Tournament I attended was right after 10th edition came out. I gave my all to get all my Orks painted (100 models) just to find out that because a new edition came out, all got painted points regardless of how much they actually painted. 1st round Custodes. I learned the hard way that pre-nerf, a Custodes on an objective is basicly unkillable without shooting. So either miss all shots with Orks and get shot off the board nexz turn or charge and die before you could even attack. Lost 20-80. 2nd round. Custodes again. Lost 20-80 again. 3rd round. FINALLY some marines. Lost 50-100. After a hard long day of loosing to dudes in unpainted armor I got last plaace and won a black rattle can and a 3d printed pug. Only last and top 3 won prices, so yeah. I also met my old english teacher there which was kind of surreal.

Your tech marine shenanigans remind me of my first tournament as one of my models, a warhound, (out of 3… I was running knights) got the entire tournaments attention and became a object of dread for my opponents in the 1st and 3rd game Until the warhound got 2 turned by the damn pre nerf eldar spamming enough 6s with fate dice to murder the emperor of mankind in addition to killing a knight castigator at the same time!

I went to my first proper tournament at the start of September. It was a two day, 5 game event. I had two issues which are similar to what you say. Firstly, we had to adjust terrain each mission which took time and I would have preferred each table to be fixed for the duration of the event. Secondly, I agree, these events are far too loud and I seriously struggled to hear my opponent across the table in each round.
