10000% agree, I recently went to Thailand again for a month in April. I learned from February up until I left ABs when I got there I was able to speak to locals and experience a side of Thailand I wouldn’t have of I didn’t. 1. I actually was a corner for a Muay Thai gym I was training at because I could speak both English and Thai. 2. I was able to get free stuff because the local Thai merchants appreciated that I took the time to study before coming. 3. I met amazing people everyday, that invited me out to parties or showed me to local markets that weren’t very touristy. 3. Even the Tuk-Tuks were happy to see that I spoke Thai and they didn’t hound me when I told them I was just walking around and enjoying the city. Learn Thai off your going to Thailand, you will have a better time. One thing though for some reason other tourists were very antagonistic and seemed to frown upon me speaking Thai when I did. Weird but the Thai locals loved it.

I agree 100% learning Thai is a must if your planning on staying long term communication is so important and you don't realize it until you go to a foreign country. Being able to express your thoughts and feelings is what makes you feel alive.

Hey great video about the motivations and reasons to learn Thai. I would just add that learning another language is a great personal project and challenge and its a rewarding journey with its highs and lows but once you get to the point you can converse its really fun to see the results of your hard work and be able to interact with native speakers. I promise its much more fun than whatever language you were forced to learn at school. If you are in Thailand, planning to visit Thailand or have Thai friends in your home country then Thai is an obvious choice and, as Mike said, a missed opportunity if you don't take advantage of that.

As a Thai, I think the hardest part for foreigner is "Thai" language has difference level for just one word/phrase depend on situation : for formal official letter, for polite speaking with older, for polite speaking with employer or employee, for speaking with friends, or speaking with close friends. Have a nice day in Thailand.

Being an independent and fully functioning human and well as not being a burden in a group situation is how I look at it. If people have to constantly stop what they are doing or talking about to translate and explain things to the foreigner who doesn't understand it really messes with the flow of communication. Sure the banter is fun but being able to step out of the expat bubble and interact with people who are not focused making a living from foreigners is a real eye opener.

I’m learning Thai right now. I think it’s important to learn to read and write at the same time you’re learning to speak. It’s helped me understand and reinforce the tone rules better as well as pronunciation. I highly recommend watching Stuart Jay Raj’s channel too. Excellent way to learn ☺️

also good ways to study independently of lessons: ChatGPT (for grammar explanation), google translate (for phrases, single words are not that useful if you don't know how to structure your sentence), browser extension language reactor (for watching Netflix with auto subtitles ;), Thai friends to practice with (app tandem might be a good start to finde people for language exchange). in my opinion reading is also a must at some point, to understand pronounciation and be able to read the menu/signs/for texting with your Thai friends. it's not overwhelmlingly hard, it's still an alphabet and not thousands of Chinese characters to memorise ;) also reading helps with language learning :)

Hey cool video about thai language, i think so too its important to learn thai if this is the last ride of your life and its a good fun decision while the world leaders spend money for hate, weapons,killing, bombs and divide the world its better to spend the boom boom girl naked affection and its cheap than all that crap of war and i think your chinese friend its right "theres a way but you have to do it your way" good quoted👍🏻🙏🏻 and that passa meetup sound like a good idea to learn and meet thai people wonder if a thai girl would like to learn spanish😺. Well thanks for the video and the good vibes 🙏🏻❤️🇹🇭its an amazing place to live, i never though i will find something really interesting in Asia i used to think 🇺🇲 the best country of the world and as a western men could you imagine the influenced force and propaganda around to make me change or keep it like that but now i think that musician guy from the band green day wrote a song about an american idiot well i guess i was one of those but not anymore, also i change believes i become buddhist and this faith its more related to thai and asian people so i find theravada buddhism its a deep connection within the thai people and that also makes it more interesting. 🙏🏻🇹🇭❤️ i hope i get back someday and stay forever and travel to 🇻🇳🙏🏻❤️ sometimes environment changes makes everything different. When both you and Mike said the word for year, you both said พี it should be ปี . Also your comment that learning to read mostly only will help in pronunciation. It will increase your vocab and sentence structure greatly. If you watch most foreigners that are fluent they all have learnt to read and write Thai. Many have even got a degree from a Thai Uni or done a asian studies program.
@GenkiStarLeaf6 ай бұрын
I couldn’t believe the comment that learning to read will mostly only help in pronunciation. What’s more shocking is Mike has actually written and selling a book on how to learn Thai, which cost as much as the more established books out there on the subject. With only 2 years of experience and you’ve already written a book. Yeah, I don’t know about that.
@glenloader6396 ай бұрын

@kittenastrophy59516 ай бұрын
Learning listening-speaking Thai leads you to be fluent in colloquial language but leanning the reading-writing leads you to be fluent in formal/writing language. It seems more diversion of these two in Thai language. Good to have both skills but formal language might be the second or less priority for the learners.
@jlee3246 ай бұрын
Agree it’s important to learn Thai if folks intend to stay long-term. Foreigners need to recognize we’re guests here. So, I find it unfortunate when I learn of foreigners who’ve been here for many years and don’t care to learn Thai. It’s insidious, actually, as their interests are selfish - to consume and take advantage of the lifestyle that affords them here with no desire to bend and integrate themselves to their host country.
@ModifiedBelle2023Ай бұрын
Yeah I think speaking Thai seems easier compared to reading/writing lol. The look of letters look super difficult to read .
Easier said , " Then done , "I have been here three years, and after making a concerted effort every day to.kearn thai I rarely am understood when speaking Thai due to the tones I'm not giving up at present, but unless there is,a,remarkable improvement, I will have to consider remaining here , I agree with you that it is,paramount to, be able to live here long-term to speak thai otherwise you will feel isolated worthless and like being stuck in a bubble

Nah, go ahead and criticize/judge. I'm three years here now and still shit at Thai, but I'm grinding away at it. My fellow expats (retired westerners) are by and large a disgrace when it comes to learning the local language. I see guys every day that have been here 10+ years and can't give a cab driver directions. It's pathetic. If you plan on living in a foreign country and *don't* plan on learning the language; you have a bad plan.
