...No explanation is necc for Pail McCartney or Geddy Lee. Just dont let them crowd out other self-accompanying bassists of great skill. We may all have equal rights from God's p.o.v., but we weren't all created with equal gifts... Many of these men & women on my list are grossly unrelated. Then again, many had no desire for the epic-level of fame which McCartney attained to & still has. Others shouldve received proper public recognition & critical acclaim decades ago: Steve Winwood -- Singer, multi-instrumentalist, & R&M man. He IS a one-man band & recording & mixing engineer all to himself. You name it, he plays it, with exception of brasswind & woodwind George Benson -- ditto. Everything Steve does, George does Benjamin Orr of the Cars -- Leading alto, backing singer (alto & tenor), songwriter. Rest In Peace, Ben, both you & Ric: 1947--2000 Janice Marie Johnson of A Taste of Honey -- Songwriter, lead soprano, backing tenor, bassist (chief instrument), rhythum guitar, 7 piece drumset Timothy B. Dalton** of the Eagles -- Backing tenor & alto, underrated & under-employed as a lead singer, bassist, songwriter Marcus Miller -- Dear God! Blues & jazz capacities of celestial heights: true blues scale, diminished augmented & altered minor scales. Only jazz artists that compare are Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, truly Lester Snell -- Chiefly a bassist, but also a rythum & strings arranger, songwriter, & producer. Not a vocalist, but who cares. Time will escape me if I name off the many acts that he was instrumental in making a success of. A direct pupil of the great Richard Hammond & an associate of Clive Davis. (Not an assoc producer of Clive, but a friend) both Hammond & Davis enjoyed the pleasure of producing Aretha Franklin, firsthand... Clive is originating founder of Arista Records *EDIT:* Yes, that's Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles! My mistake 🤬

Luigi Cornielles, it just takes practice... one of the tricks is when the phrasing of the lyrics is actually in sync with the bassline, other times you have to separate the two. Not easy for sure, and then at the end of the night, one person realizes what you did and compliments you, and it’s NEVER going to be a female !

In the 1970's, Paul McCartney was criticized at times by John Lennon and various music critics for writing so called light senseless pop songs about love. Music critics were even questioning McCartney's ability for writing great music - like he had done earlier in his career. This song was McCartney's answer he gave to those "brilliant" music critics. "Silly Love Songs" topped the charts nearly the entire Spring/Summer of 1976, and finished the year at #1 in Billboards list of best songs of 1976. On a side note, the beginning of this song sounds to me like a factory making and churning out silly love songs. Silly love songs? Keep them coming, Mr. McCartney. We'll take them all.

And it ended up being one of my favourite of his songs. There's _nothing_ wrong and everything right with that! John could be a mopey bastard. ;0)
@at90percent
@at90percent 9 жыл бұрын
nycinstyle The other thing that is brilliant about this song is that he wrote the melody to be extremely simple so that it wouldn't conflict with his cool bass line and also makes it much easier for him to sing while he is playing such a complex base line. When you get right down to it the first verse of the song is basically on one note, again allowing him to focus on the complex bass line.

Why did Lennon take such a stance on McCartney for writing silly love songs? Despite the fact on Double Fantasy Lennon's tracks were silly love songs, I'm not saying any of the songs are bad I actually love them. But his love songs weren't much different from McCartney's ones!
@at90percent
@at90percent 9 жыл бұрын
Gordon Smith Well, Double Fantasy came out in 1980. A good seven to nine years after Silly Love Songs. John perhaps had a change of mind and heart when he now had a family in the way that Paul did. Living with a wife and child he now loved. Or perhaps he was playing those mind games.

I had always assumed this song must have been heavily produced/edited in the studio because it's so complex. The incredible bass line with Paul's vocals over the top, the intricate harmonies, I figured it all had to be produced in the studio. But to hear Paul play it so well, live, shows that Paul is a musical genius.

Paul was the Best live performer without question. Even in the Beatles days he was an extravert and loved playing live. During the 70s he outsold all Beatles combined. If you compare his live performances to others it's not close, playing all the different instruments and singing all the songs makes him the ultimate musician period. There's others that are great but not close to the years and songs Paul's been playing. Today they hardly play instruments and just sing to a backing of electronic enhancements. Today's music artists use so many enhancements that they can't even sing without autotune or play an instrument. It's all becoming computerized garbage.

@@MikeBUSA Perhaps Joe possesses some ambidexterity in that case. If he's really right handed, then its interesting to know that Phil Collins- - although right handed- - plays snare with his right, while counting with cymbal pings & working the toms with his left. Didnt think about it until now, but whichever foot works the bass drum should be a reliable indication of what handed a drummer is 🖐 After 10 years on a 5- piece set I dont consider myself an expert. But when the rhythum calls for somekind of reversal, only thing I can do is cross one hand over the other... My RH working rack toms while making muffled taps LH on the hi hat for example

@@magnificentmuttley154 , it's just a preference. Mike Mangini of Dream Theater and Danny Carey of Tool are two examples of open handed drummers. There may be times they go more traditional or move their hi hats toward center more. That's why music is so great - there are no rules.

@magnificentmuttley154
@magnificentmuttley154 4 жыл бұрын
*@Mike Peragine* 💯% agreed. I'll gladly share over the very best concert of my lifetime. Concert of the Century, IMO. Too early for me to remember of course, but I was 4 when _Silly Love Songs, Band On the Run, & Maybe Im Amazed_ all covered pop radio & continued to play regularly throughout the 70s. Never knew about _Rockshow._ Never got to see Paul & his crew perform on TV in all that time. After all those years of hearing Paul & Wings play, eventually when I got my 1st job I got a copy of the _Wings Over America, Live_ album. You can be sure that had I been old enough to drive in 1976 I wouldve made it to Seattle to see this. Or at least come up with the $$ to take Greyhound With my background story finally out of the way, what Im really trying to get out of myself is this very recording of _Silly Love Songs_ simply blew my mind. Only Jeff Lynne & ELO, Dexter Wansel's MFSB/ aka The Sound of Philadelphia TSOP, or Boz Skaggs' _Lowdown_ could even compare to Jazz+Funk Fusion on that level. To jog your memory on MFSBs songs, theres also _Love Is the Message & When Will I See You Again,_ both featuring the Three Degrees. There are also _Metamorphosis & Mysteries of the World._ As a 70s kid these were songs that hit me REAL hard the 1st time I heard them- - an epic-level music that you only need to hear ONCE. And God forbid, but if its 25, 40, or 50 years later before you hear it the 2nd time, you never forget: 🔊😳! ! _--->_ 😊👍 Anyway, from 18 on listening to this on the _Live_ album, I could sense the love from the audience, even the warm summer night atmosphere of the Hippodrome. Remember, throughout the 70s & 80s Id never seen Paul or Wings perform at this point. Not on TV & certainly not live. However, even without the visual benefit of being on film, all to itself this recording is just magical; mesmerizing from the very 1st day I played it. And it still is. After a lifetime of concert-going & listening to miles of recordings sufficient to go to Mars & back, Ive never heard anything else like it! :')' ' ' (tears of joy) Please talk to me about any recordings of any live performances you know that capture the night air & evoke a sense of depth & space like this one. Theres just enough natural reverb that fills the space inside the Hippodrome in the recording; as though to transport you & make you feel like youre really there. Im ALL EARS to suggestions 😊😊💕!
