I agree, practice is KEY. For me, Mariah Carey came out when I was in 1st grade and I practiced singing her songs exactly like her & learning the ability to do her runs. Also Whitney Houston, then Destinys Child (Beyonce) as a kid/teenager. Now I sing runs easily. You have to buy their entire album and sing w it when ur alone. But for me I started practicing at age 6 and now Im 35, but could sing very nicely w runs by my teens and better by my early 20s and still better now. Practice IS key.

A big trick to help with this is to alternate on simple syllables with the exercise. Ex: da ba da ba da ba da ba da. ALSO make sure you are letting the air lead the notes, instead of thinking of your voice switching on the notes! So think on the “breathy/airy” side of your voice when first practicing and don’t force the notes. Another tip, don’t let your jaw make the movements. It stays still :) good luck! You’ve got this!

I want to share this because this video really has opened me musically. I watched this video over a year ago and I've been singing everyday since. I'm 24. I never sang a day in my life due to insecurities I had about myself. Ive made significant progress as a singer. Been focusing on control after getting my vibrato down recently. When you sing my advice is sing from the heart. I sing for fun. I sing for therapy. You will have rough days. I have off days. The key is not stopping if you mess up and pushing forward. If you want to learn how to sing start here. Find a quiet place, replay this video until you have the pattern and practice that pattern. Branch off at your own speed. Don't work for music. Make music work for you. Edit: Just to add on for anyone else I may could help here. When you're singing mouth placement is important. This is an interactive exercise you can do right now. Open your mouth like you're yawning and stop at a half-yawn. That is where you want your mouth when you sing. Your tongue should rest on the bottom of your mouth and only move on vowels. I'll update this with each reply to help others with tips from my self-learning experience.

@stevenhargis4219 Жыл бұрын
@@ryanrobinson9691 I could explain it to you which would take awhile or I could show you. I have videos of myself now. I just don't post often. I'm now on year 3 of singing. I've opened up to the process. I'm not as closed off as I used to be. I've honed into falsetto and can work within a range of Lil Nas x in terms of how low in pitch I can go and Adele in relation to higher pitch. I'm constantly working every day to improve and I still have my off days. Breath control is a good one. Billie Eilish is a good artist to mimic to not only practice breath control but also falsetto. Like I said previously don't work for music. Let it work for you. For example you know what you like to listen to. Start there. Begin with an artist or band you're comfortable with and learn some of their songs. Your vocal chords aren't just a part of your body. They are an instrument, just like a piano or guitar. It takes practice and the best part of the journey is looking back on recordings of yourself and seeing your progress.

For you theory people out there. The “1” in this example is actually the 5th. So if we were to be in the key of “C” , he is starting you on “G” The Root is really on “3” .. that’s the 1 in the scale. A major pentatonic scale is 1 2 3 5 6 8(1) Starting on the note he is giving you sounds actually really good. Which I never thought about. So he’s teaching “ G A C D E G “ Which is pretty genius. Cause it sounds very Gospel

If anyone is following along with this well enough but feel like they sound "off" or "dull", the best phrase I've learned recently is "sing through the notes, not into them." Your run might be a little wobbly if you're not giving enough volume and body to each note, which is why starting slow is important!

One of the singers that always wowed me with his runs was AJ from the Backstreet Boys. He'd usually handle that part, and he'd somehow keep every single note separate and on-key, but at the same time the flow would be perfectly smooth. I never understood how he could do that.

I watched about half a dozen videoes--the ONLY one --that is clear cut bones, easy-to-follow, do-able, solid exercise! But yet shows a singer-in-training what a developed stylized sound can be like without all the dogma, or the numerous, random gratuitous vocal selfies--that show off the singer but doesn't the singer in training. . Excellent lesson--thank you.

My story on how I learned to sing, from a regular person who has never had a vocal coach or been professional: practice is definitely KEY. I happened to be in 1st grade, age 6, when Mariah Carey came out in 1990 w "Vision of Love" and that album. Also, Whitney Houston was out at the same time and HUGE. My parents bought me all Mariah albums for me and the Whitney "Bodyguard" album was VERY IMPORTANT in helping me learn to sing. Although I rarely practiced at the age of 6, just in the car when w my Mom or in the house, by the time I was in 4th & 5th grade and then all thru middle school, I would come home from school and practice singing Mariah, Whitney, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child (Beyonce sang all the parts, lets be honest) etc. and practicing for at least an hour until my parents got home from work! I was an only child so it was easy. I would ALWAYS sing along w whatever songs came on the radio in the car bc my Mom would also sing along but at some point around High School, I started getting better than my Mom! Both of us sang in the school chorus until 9th grade but neither of us sang a solo in front of the school bc we were too scared, when we should've gotten up there bc we were good! By high school, I got a karaoke machine but instead of singing to the songs it came w (most I didn't like or some were out of my range and didn't make me sound my best) I started recording myself (using a cassette player, which the karaoke machine came w along w a microphone, and listening back w headphones on) singing to Mariah, Christina (Genie in a Bottle & her 1st album- so many runs), Destinys Child and had the ability to be my own vocal coach and fix the parts where I didn't sound well and worked on my singing techniques all by myself. By the time I was 18, I would only sing in front of family, in the car, or in front of my best friend who told me how great of a singer I was and basically peer pressured me 1 night to sing in front of a group of our friends. I did and they all agreed and ever since, I sometimes sing in front of ppl but have never been on stage or in a band. Its like a hobby. I practice every single day when I'm home alone after work or whatever, when my kids are at school or outside playing, singing in the shower, and I find I sing best after drinking a hot drink like coffee or tea and after being exposed to the humidity of a shower, which there is a reason ppl sound so good in the shower besides the acoustics. Anyways, I'm now in my 30s and I can sing runs even better BUT I smoke cigarettes and have lost MOST of my higher note range, including the Mariah Carey whistle register! I hope that if I stop smoking and w practice as before, I can get it back! In the meantime, he is right in that practice is key. Sing along w the music when you are alone. Your vocal cords are a muscle and can be developed. Now if you don't have the ability to stat in tune or key then you will probably never be able to sing. Just being honest. I just have natural musical ability I think. I am also on YT browsing singing videos to see if theres anything I can learn to help me, but tbh I have runs & riffs down pat. I hope my own honest true life story about singing has inspired people to practice and work at it, and DO NOT SMOKE!!! It makes your voice sound horrible and the mucus you will cough up everyday is like when you are sick and congested - REALLY GROSS, besides the fact we now KNOW FOR A 100% FACT SMOKING KILLS AND CAUSES CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS.

You are such a great teacher! This technique… which always seemed so advanced… was very accessible after watching/practicing along with you. I have been singing karaoke for a bit… getting positive responses from people. But I would avoid any songs with any serious vocal runs. Pleased to say that… with your help… I recently performed Teddy Swims “I Lose Control” and received a standing ovation… not a song I would have attempted before this.
