In my opinion, you already own the PERFECT tent! The one you sleep in, the Hilleberg Unna, sand color, mosquito inner. I have slept hundreds of nights in exactly that tent, in all kind of conditions, while biking, kayaking and hiking. I just can't imaging a better alround and bomb proof tent. OK, I did buy all the extra's for it, like snow/sand stakes, extra heavy poles, additional guylines, the footprint, and the mosquito inner tent. Once you have that, you can bring whathever your trip might ask for. It is like owning every imaginable tent in the world. So again, stick with your great Unna, it is unbeatable!

Probably won't happen, but boiling water that way means if a gust of wind blew the cone and pot over you'd get first degree burns on the inside of one leg. The cones are normally pretty sturdy in most breezes but Ive had one go over in a sudden unexpected gust.

I have camped near there a few times... last year at about 3am I was awoken by what sounded like a plane coming down.. it was so close that my friend got out of his tent ready to run ( don't know where to ) .. I honestly though my days had ended by a plane crashing on to us.. it was too cloudy to see how close it was but it sounded different than all the other planes.... Take care out there.

DCF tents are for long-distance hiking. That's where the weight savings matter. For weekend warriors save your money and carry the extra weight. DCF tents not only cost twice as woven they also last half the time. So 4x the price per use. If you've got money to burn then why not though.

I have trekking pole dcf tents that are 14 years old and still going strong. If you take care of your quality gear, it will last a long time. I've had regular tents fail when the pole systems simply age and break. Weight savings is great for thru hiking, but I love a lightweight pack and kit even if I'm just going out for a few miles over a few days. Why should I carry an extra couple of lbs when I have crappy knees or a bad back. My dcf tents are amazing no matter how long or short my trip may be.

Hi Paul, thanks for another nice video. I am currently using the Xmid Pro 1 in the North part of Sweden (Umeå last, Boden next). It is the one-person tent I had been looking for (some two-person tents I had been using before were also the one-person tent I had been looking for, but this one is so light compared to my previous nylon 2-person tents, it's a 1-to-4 ratio!). It's too small to have all your stuff with you like you would in a 2-person tent, but there is room for the essentials, and the absides are large enough for my oversized backpack (I'm never doing more than two consecutive camping nights but I'm traveling in Sweden for 5 weeks without a base to leave stuff at). There's enough height to use a pee bottle inside, which makes a big difference in the middle of the night when it's raining outside. The Xmid Pro 1 has stood up to the rain very well, and to a bit of wind, but that was already discussed in the video. It is very airy, which contributed to condensation being extremely minor so far: despite the rain on the outside, on the inside there has only been a layer of condensation so thin I never even bothered to wipe it up. You might find it too airy for the sort of places where you camp; if it's windy and cold, you will definitely have to use a few degrees better insulation than what you would have in another tent. The straight zippers have done a good job of keeping the mosquitoes out, they can be opened and closed very quickly; the vertical ones can usually be operated one-handed, the horizontal ones may require two hands. This has been one of the factors that made it acceptable to have my stuff in the absides instead of with me: access without letting mosquitoes in.

Hi Paul, from Argentina, may I ask you something unrelated? I noticed the weather there is pretty similar to Buenos Aires winter (humidity 95 percent, everything wet, lots of fog). I have a new down sleeping bag and I have condensación inside the sleeping bag! As much as it wakes me up and I had to wipe the inner of the bag, with my fleece. Never happened to me in my 45 years, but is my first down sleeping bag, after I decided my 40y.o. sleeping bag needs to retire. Did you ever experienced sometjing like that? I tried at my garden nights of 5 and 7 Celsius degrees. Before the morning the humidity got to the down and I woke up being cold because of it. I only used a thin layer of first skin clothes while sleeping.
@slippery999
@slippery999 Ай бұрын
Hi, there could be several reasons why this is happening and I’m not sure exactly what conditions you are camping in. I’ve never had condensation inside a down sleeping bag or do you mean a bivy bag? Basically condensation occurs when warm air condenses on a cool surface this is the dew point. There could be several factors, better ventilation in your tent, make sure you are not too hot when you get in your sleeping bag, make sure any clothes you wear are not damp, do not breathe inside your bag keep your head out of the bag, is the bag too warm for the conditions and you’re overheating? You could try using a synthetic over bag to move the dew point outside the layers of the down bag or if none of that works I can only suggest you use a vapour barrier liner VBL. Hope this helps.

Its funny though, i tried this stile Zpacks Dyneema tents. Thing is its terrible in winter conditions. The dyneema is not as strong as they say either, reason is the Dyneema is way to thin. They tend to break en fewer uses than DilNylon tents. Condensation happend when its too rainy, and misty. Its also a problem when you break a pole on the lo g distance hikes. And its not as sturdy at storms either. Super expesive, with shipping and taxes too. Hilleberg does a way better job, but still too expensive and to small for me.

you do know you can just use a stick if you break a pole? what would you do in a normal tent if you broke the pole? hmm? and condensation happens in ALL tents when it is too rainy and misty... and it isn't a tent for SNOW conditions... they have a "solid" model which has less netting and more solid walls which removes some of the draft that is an issue for winter tenting...

Dude condesation happens in all tents, but there is a good reason Silnylon often has Innertents, and "breath" in air changes. Dyneema tents dont you know. Have you ever tried snow camping on summer? With a Dyneema tent? Well I did Zpacks Plex, mid summer, and got stuck in a storm with turned to be a wet and snow condesation windy hell. NEVER AGAIN. And btw I do have 30 years of experience

Is it just me, or does DCF sound awful in the wind? Think at that price, I'd go for the Duplex Zip with poles... How's about Good Bloke's "Bonfus Duos" do you like the look of that?

Durston tents are fine but they cost like they are hand made in North America or Europe but are made in Asia. Zpacks all the way. I don’t really think with your climate a single wall tent is the way to go. Condensation is a real problem. Just how it is.

Recall in a previous video Andy mentioning how he has no interest in walking any of the World's long distance trails.. So given that, why the focus on the ultra ultra light tent's?

Tent looks like it would be freezing in anything other than mild wind. Surely any weight saving over the 1p solid is offset by the extra layers of clothing you’d have to wear whilst sleeping ??
@GadgetMart

lol no tent is ‘warm’ that’s what your mat and sleeping bag are for. Unless you’re hot tenting of course and even that’s freezing when the stove goes out.

Tents other than maybe some proper 4 season kit are literally just tarps designed to keep wind and rain out. Your clothing and sleep system and food keep you warm.

I'd bet Andy's quilt, pad and clothing is no more insulated than Paul's. It's true that the mesh may add a couple of degrees of warmth, but it really doesn't change the insulation and kit you bring when camping in those conditions. I had my dcf tent out this past week and my total pack weight, with food and water was under 18lbs. That included a 20 degree F quilt and insulated pad and sleep thermals. The people with me had packs closer to 30lbs and brought double wall tents and a sleeping liner instead of a sleeping quilt or bag trying to save weight at 9000 feet elevation. They froze. I was a bit too toasty warm in my dcf single wall. A double wall tent at a weight penalty doesn't guarantee a smart and warm kit or camper.

dcf suffers badly from micro abrasion. it has half the life of silpoly.. but of course its excellent if you need it for longer trips where every kg counts
