Hi Paul, I know you're obsessed with low weight and that's an admirable pursuit, but, if you're swapping out a multi functional SAK for a single function Opinel, you're taking it a bit far. What if you need tweezers or a toothpick ? A screwdriver for your tripod ? Even a can opener ? It's a false economy....

Hello Paul from NZ. I like your choice of pack, I have the same I am in the mountains over 40 times a year from one day tramps to 5 day tramps (we call it tramping not hiking). The pack is very light and easy on the back. I carry up to and over 15kg depending on how many days I'm in the mountains. I think that your videos are one of the best no nonsense on KZbin . I have had over 50 years in the mountains 9 Years as a guide and I'm still out there doing it. So I know that you know what you are talking about. Well done. Keep the videos coming. 😀

I was a bit like this when I packed for my 5 weeks Canadian trip (Sept-Oct). 30 liters rucksack, under 10 kg weight, same tent (broke/repaired in 2 weeks), down sleeping bag (-7C). I took hiking boots and wellies and when, just before the flight posted hiking boots back to home. I think hiking boots better for Canada, wellies - for Scotland (hiked cuillin ridge in wellies). If you hike in the boots good thing to take - newspaper. For lightweight food: ground porridge and buckwheat

Great video. There’s such a lot of gear out there it’s hard to know which is best. I did a five day hike in summer and didn’t bother with a sleeping bag. I just wore my down jacket and put my feet in the rucksack. Sometimes it’s good to see how little gear you actually need and sometimes it’s good to splash out on a few luxuries. Good luck on your trip.

This is great but my pack also has to include water (no water fresh, or otherwise where I go). Minimum 2 litres per day in the warmer region so for 3 days that works out to 6-7 litres = additional 7 kgs

well done, great editing. 8kg is a good weight for 3 days. My kit is twice that at 16kg however I carry more heavy duty items such as stainless steel water bottle, pot, cup and burner. Big knife, folding saw, multitool, small knife. Small fishing kit with slingshot. Heavy snow goretex jacket. Canvas tarp/bivy/poncho and my pack is a 55L 5.11 tactical rush 72 @ 2.4kg empty. Mines more of a camping, bushcraft, fishing kit with an emphasis on being heavy duty for bushcraft/survival skills. 16kg includes 3 days of food and 2L/kg of water. Thanks for sharing.

Its just the price with those dehydrated meals that puts me off. I'd want a takeaway level meal for that price lol. I'd rather take a pasta-n-sauce packet for 50p but each to their own
@zeshanhm3 жыл бұрын
You can make your own, that’s what I do. Dehydrated food from the bulk section at grocery store, store a breakfast, lunch and dinner in a gallon bag. If you want to be extra light you can use the food bag from those backpacking meals, the bag is very strong can handle boiling water, cleans out easily.
@Yer_Da_3 жыл бұрын
@@zeshanhm Dehydrated isn't the same as freeze dried - those Summit to Eat meals are freeze dried which is expensive to make, they're more nutritous than dehyrdrated meals hence why they're popular with back packers.

Your setup is good, my kit weighs around that too with water and food added (3 season). In the summertime i can go down to 5 kg. I go ultralight mostly because of backproblems. As for kit: I'd add a first aid kit, including blister treatment. A belt with at least one storage pocket (unless the backpack got one) would mainly use it to store quick access stuff like a map/compass. Finally, i'd add some spices for the food since it ca be a bit bland.

I use an older Arcteryx Bora 65 (made in Canada), Hilleberg Soulo, Marmot 3 season down bag and I go all luxury and bring with a porlex coffee grinder, aeropress, black diamond lantern (~350 g.), Hemingway short stories, Swarovski binoculars, fishing pole and lures, one Bamse extreme sleeping mat and one of those Exped UL inflatable mattresses that should not be trusted. Very interesting to see how light kit you have put together for a three nighter.

Use mesh bags for damp , soiled cloths, T shirst, socks etc to allow them to breath rather than sealed plastic bag. Also use a thermal blanket in summer great weight saver. Use 'firebox' to heat water & cook, only needs some twigs, so saves on cannisters & they can easily run out of gas on long walks.
