Thank you so much for the tip about the paper tape and the corners to get it smooth! I'm a DI wire who has removed all the stumpled ceilings in her home but the hallway because the ceilings were painted was giving me a hell of a time and I ended up having the most difficulty with that area's corners! You are a lifesaver!

Thanks for your videos. I purchased my first home last year. It was built in 1993 and some of the drywall tape joints in the ceiling have cracked. My plan is to repair the tape joints and then repaint the ceiling, crown molding, and walls. Yours and other great videos out there have been very helpful.

I’m a carpenter primarily. I love that Fiba Fuse! I tend to use 20min easy sand for everything except final coat. But, that’s because I’m often tight on time for how much I can wait between coats. I’m right with you on your methods!

I have two questions for you, sir! I have viewed so many videos to learn how to do a drywall seam repair. I have (thought I had!) all of the proper supplies, but the only two tapes I have are standard paper seam tape, and mesh tape…if I must choose between one of those tapes, which would you use on the exposed seams (old paper removed)?? Also, I’m confused re: which compound to use. Based on what I have viewed, and given that removing that tape has revealed quite a large, uniform gap, I purchased the Easy Sand 20, and USG All purpose joint compound (green lid). Given your comment that you also use the hot mud, should I pre fill the open areas with the hot mud, then also set the tape with the hot mud second? Should I plan to use the All Purpose for further skim coats? Thank you for your help-for every contractor and DIYer, there’s a different approach! 🤪

I'm getting ready to do a ceiling repair. Thus video has been quite helpful. I just finished my first skim coating on an entire room and thanks to you, it turned out great! I'm so pleased with it. Not quite as fast as you but I got it done.😁 I'm planning on using Durham's Rock Hard for the ceiling cracks. Have you ever used it? One area has the tape lifting and at the other end of the room, what appears to be a settling crack. Fingers crossed this comes out as well as the skim coat!

Hey Paul, I appreciate the drywall repair lessons on the ceiling. I’m a tile subcontractor, who, every now and then, is faced with a drywall repair. Yesterday, while trimming out some old ugly drywall corners in stained hemlock, I hit the overhead hose bib running in the ceiling with my 15g nailer ( I hit it 3 out of five nails - water everywhere!🙄). I repaired the copper, but now I’m left with a 1’x4’ drywall repair. The long edges are on Joyce’s. Thanks for the tips. The ceiling looks like old heavy orange peel. So, if paper tape is all that is available, would you wet the paper before on the flat runs?

Thanks Paul. Great tips for someone who prefer to use own hands. I purchase my home in 2014, old one, which was impossible to call as a house, there were the walls and roof. The house 1947 built. I cannot really believe what I was through to call it my home. All inside works I did myself and It were pretty well done, using help of people online. But there were not all works you can do yourself and you use licensed professionals as well but too expensive. Sometimes I tried to give job to people as handy or who promised to do good job on my house but that terrible experience drove me mad. I notice, people do terrible job as they do not care how you are going to deal with everything they done. In a month or so you begin to notice that bad done. You still pay a hell of a lot for this poor anything. I just notice they probably think you will ask them again and again to come and do the same jobs over and over again and pay. No way, Not me! I understand I can do anything if there are people like you online to help and save. If you want quality and well done work, do it yourself. Slowly, passionately, using your imagination and creativity with just a little kick from professional. I truly appreciate your help. Would be nice if you will suggest the materials you use as well. Thank you again 🙏

And can I do it in smaller sections and tape them together. Also the existing texture is adhered and and spun in a circular turn rather than uniformly textured. How can I match that type texture?

OK We went through a real rainy Spell here in the South & I went on Vacation for a couple of Weeks, When I return a whole 8ft section of the ceiling Cracked & Separated from the existing ceiling in My large Living Room. No water damage.. My question is. using your detailed instructions could I cut out & Square. then replace the Bad section. What i would like to know is it possible to make Bad section look Lovely, then sand texture of remaining Ceiling and apply some kind of popcorn texture to the Whole Ceiling .What I am trying to do here is to get out of replacing the whole ceiling. Sorry hard to explain without Pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated..Kay

We'll, it's not gonna be a short project, but eminently doable. Gonna have to cut around all the old screw/nails and pop out the old mud that hides the fasteners. Take out all those old screws (easy). If they are nails (harder, not impossible), my suggestion would be to get a Moulding Nail Remover also called a "cat's claw". 8" one is sufficient and runs about $9 on Amazon. Makes taking drywall nails out almost fun. I said ALMOST. Will have to put in TWO new coarse thread screws FOR each one you took out, about an inch above and below the old holes then finish as usual. Don't forget to use the butt end of your taping knife to kinda depress where the old fasteners were so you don't have any paper sticking up through your new mud. For the cracks, ya gotta slice down right through the crack, pull off any loose mud and tape if you find any. For the loose tape, you'll have to pull/cut off as much as you can. You don't want ANY loose paper at all. On both of these projects, make a small "V" shaped groove along the entire crack, get out any dust and use 45 minute mud to fill the crack and level off any areas that are depressed from tape removal. Just kinda get them flat with a 6" knife and then proceed as Paul has done in this video with the FibaFuse. The finishing will be different depending on the texture of the surface. Probably gonna have to feather it out to 12" to 18" or even 24" to get it looking relatively flat if it is a smooth finished wall/ceiling. If you don't go out far enough, the wall will look like a roller coaster, especially if the light is coming from a shallow angle. One thing I have learned is that the wall will NEVER be absolutely flat, it just has to have the appearance if being flat. That's why the repairs on cracks and on butt joints have to be finished so ridiculously wide. Not terribly hard, just a little tedious and more nitpicky around the doorway mouldings. If textured/skip troweled, your job is a bit easier in that you won't have to be quite as picky with absolute flatness, but matching textures is more of an art. Watch Paul for tips and tricks on skip troweling. They also make canned sprays for small area orange peel textures and the like. Sorry for the long answer, but that's the way it is. Not as bad as it sounds.😉

@@xephael3485 have the same type of walls in the old section of my 1950's house. I believe the underlayment is 1/4" "Blueboard" nailed in with ringshank blue nails. Expanded steel mesh was also nailed in all the corners. Over this was about 3/8" brown scratch coat which also the embedded steel mesh. This was followed up with a finish coat of glass smooth (and hard) white plaster. Also at the floor line was a 3/4" x 3/4" piece of wood to give the plasterer a guide to go by to keep the wall pretty flat when finishing down where the baseboards would be nailed. Hated to take some of the stuff out when we did some remodeling. They did a good job. I believe ours was the "model" house for the builder on this block, so they made it look real "pretty".

Can this tape be used as an alternative on fresh drywall instead of paper tape? I noticed this tape doesn’t have a crease like paper tape so how do you apply this in the corners ?

@@ajherrera2453 on regular tapered joints, it's kinda overkill and a lot more expensive. Unless the joint is going to be under some type of stress, just go with paper.

DIYer. I have lots of spots in my house where the paper tape and the plastic corner bead (rounded corners) are peeling away. I wonder if the builder may have used hot mud to bed the tape and the mud didn’t adhere well to the tape, or is there another cause of this? I also have 5 ceiling cracks to repair as well as water damaged ceilings in 4 rooms. Obviously crappy builder who hired only the cheapest subs. This is a 3,800 sq ft house in an upscale neighborhood. I wrongly expected better build quality.
