Thank you for this. I tried to follow this step by step to repair some pretty deep cracks in my ceiling. I would like to add that you can really mess this up if you make some mistakes like I did. I put the joint compound on too thick, trying to sand off your ceiling is as bad and it sounds, really dusty and difficult. It now looks quite a bit worse than before and that was pretty bad. So if you try this be sure to do a very thin coat of the compound because it will be very difficult to remove and you will be sorry. Anyway, Thank you for tryin to help us.

Oh my God dude you are seriously my HERO!!!! my landlords are extremely cheap and don't like to repair anything so I do all the work my self though they increase my rent every year, my kitchen has that issue. Thanks to you I think I can handle this repair my self since I'm going to repaint the kitchen anyways. Been living here in this house for 8 years and the only things the landlords have done was replacing my water heater twice after having no hot water for 5 days. Each time. Thats how long they took to consider replacing the water heater and my landlords are a Lutheran Church lol!

So much negativity from angry elitist "handymen" and "contractors" who just hate on these pages because it teaches people how to do something themselves as opposed to paying said "handymen" or "contractors" some bloated hourly rate to do the same job. You all know it's true. You're just mad because every person that watches this is one more person that you won't be able to price gouge. Even if he had done this with screws, or plaster or primer or whatever "professional" method you use, you'd still be on here criticizing something. I love videos like this. Yip, agreed John. Agreed gabriel back blocking above the crack will strengthen and stop that crack coming back . Also I would rescrew the affected area
@crinngeteamsquad48313 жыл бұрын
I agree Gabriel it was a good attempt if the only problem was failing drywall tape, but we all know that is not usually why we see cracks in the ceiling. It is either coming lose from screws or screws coming loose from shrinking wood behind drywall. Needs to be secured properly before just making it cosmetically appealing again. That could even lead to worse problems or even dangerous problems down the road.

I can see you do excellent work, I have a problem with a house builted in 1949 that has a ceiling crack all the way across the room in serval places. I've repaired it with mess tape. The day of the repair it looks great but the next day it looks like the tape in bulging a little , and shows where the crack was. I used paper tape on one and it was real bad. What do I do? Do I need to reinforce the plaster back to ceiling , am I using wrong material. Using 20 minute mix.
@homemend2 жыл бұрын
Hey Larry. No sir it sounds like your product is correct. Stubborn cracks can take three Coats of mud to feather it out so where is not noticeable. If your crack seems to be getting bigger it may be time to replace to ceiling. Those old plaster ceiling’s weigh a lot And you definitely don’t wanna risk them falling. If you feel the ceiling is secure I would try more coats to hide the crack. I hope this helps Larry.

Thank you for the video tutorial, always enjoy your them. You ever repair inside corner cracks. I have a dilemma where the drywall cracked from inside corner. Came to find out there were no stud behind the drywall that came detached. From the split reveal part of interior, I do see clip where the drywall corner meets. It appears one side of the drywall was fasten into stud & the split side was fasten into the drywall clips. Hard to believe how these older houses were built. Any suggestions/tricks besides tearing out & replacing old drywall & adding stud behind to secure it? Even that may present challenges too, behind these drywalls are brick walls so hopefully there's enough space allow to drive screws to add new studs behind. Hope to hear from you soon. Thnx so much for the input!...
@homemend5 ай бұрын
Sounds like you have an inside seam corner that is not secured? Without tearing it out I would try fiberglass mesh adhesive tape. You can even double up the layers if you need to. And then use. 20 minute mud with a few coats. That should be fairly strong.

I used joint compound to do this on a dry wall ceiling and it came out a bit lumpy. What are the benefits of EZ Sand over joint compound? I also have a few more seams that are coming apart on another ceiling, which I think is plaster. They haven't ripped, they're just peeling and curling. Should I cut the curled part back and then do the repair or should I try to tamp the "paper" down and then cover them w/the tape, etc?
@homemend4 жыл бұрын
hey d..the ez is similar to the joint compound...just mix it up so its super smooth...i use the 5 only because it dries quick if the tape is buckled, you might try cutting it out with a razor knife so the new tape can lay in the gap.. a little easier to cover. You can go over top but it will require a little more feathering out to blend...you got this!

hey C... current video? this was done about a year and a half ago with an extremely picky customer..they wouldn't have let me go if it didnt look good. I like to use behr premium plus ultra. I find that if you actually use good paint with primer, it covers nice and is rich. If youre not using paint with primer in it by now, you're taking too long on jobs...IMO of course.. Thanks so much for commenting.

Nick S. You’re 100% correct on all points. AND that problem will be an issue again in the future.
@myopicseer4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The reason you often have this seem problem is because the fasteners were too far apart (allowing the boards to sag, breaking along the seam edge). Always push up with the butt of a hammer to see if either board is moving.

Have something similar on my popcorn ceiling. Not so easy. Any suggestions?
@homemend4 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary! Popcorn is a little tougher. You will need to scrape down the texture near the repair so you can make a smooth seam. Then apply more texture. If it’s tough to get it off you can wet it to soften it up. You got this!

Cracks like this form all the time for reasons other than an unsecure piece of drywall. Changes in seasons/temperature/humidity levels cause expansion and contraction of the joints, and small hairline cracks like this form. Screws and nails aren't going to stop that.

Home Mender water damage from multiple sources - roof leak , broken pipes, water heaters used to be inside kitchens , etc . My house has drywall under plaster job ( original install) so how would you even attempt to either waste time redoing the same appearing cracks from 5 years ago ? Or something else I was told and will be doing? Go to home store buy enough 1/4 in drywall to cover entire ceiling, and make sure to cross over areas where cracks appeared under the new will cover so cracks never reappear ! And problem fixed

Hey mad. Anytime you have a seam or substantial crack, you should use mesh or the paper tape. I like the mesh because it’s self adhesive. Saves a step.

I just tried this. It ended up looking good from below in diffuse light, but when a near horizontal light shines across the ceiling it shows up the bump caused by the tape and new plaster casting a shadow. Ideally you want to end up with the ceiling dead flat. You could do that by grinding out a shallow trench along the crack, with a rotary grinding disk on an angle grinder, wide and deep enough to safely burry the scrim tape in before plastering over it. I haven't tried that yet. Besides making a lot of dust, would that work?
@homemend29 күн бұрын
That would be a big mess. Mine was easier because I removed the tape and installed new tape in the same place. With yours, you would want to feather it out. Try using a wider knife, feather it out 12 inches or more on both sides. Texture ceilings can be fun too.

My ceiling is old 1960s textured brush swirl looking pattern. The crack is starting to droop on one side. I’m only confused on how to blend the repaired part so it won’t be so noticeable. I can’t just scrape off the painted swirl pattern. Any advice?
@homemend Жыл бұрын
I can’t let your awesome description Kev. As long as it’s not in danger of falling and you can’t push up on it, build up small codes and even go farther out around the repair area, if it’s a large large area you may just retexture the whole ceiling. I hope this helps
