Oh my God dude you are seriously my HERO!!!! my landlords are extremely cheap and don't like to repair anything so I do all the work my self though they increase my rent every year, my kitchen has that issue. Thanks to you I think I can handle this repair my self since I'm going to repaint the kitchen anyways. Been living here in this house for 8 years and the only things the landlords have done was replacing my water heater twice after having no hot water for 5 days. Each time. Thats how long they took to consider replacing the water heater and my landlords are a Lutheran Church lol!

Thank you for this. I tried to follow this step by step to repair some pretty deep cracks in my ceiling. I would like to add that you can really mess this up if you make some mistakes like I did. I put the joint compound on too thick, trying to sand off your ceiling is as bad and it sounds, really dusty and difficult. It now looks quite a bit worse than before and that was pretty bad. So if you try this be sure to do a very thin coat of the compound because it will be very difficult to remove and you will be sorry. Anyway, Thank you for tryin to help us.

So much negativity from angry elitist "handymen" and "contractors" who just hate on these pages because it teaches people how to do something themselves as opposed to paying said "handymen" or "contractors" some bloated hourly rate to do the same job. You all know it's true. You're just mad because every person that watches this is one more person that you won't be able to price gouge. Even if he had done this with screws, or plaster or primer or whatever "professional" method you use, you'd still be on here criticizing something. I love videos like this. Good, informative and to the point. Anytime something gets people to roll up their sleeves and put some sweat equity back into their homes I'm in support of it.

@paulmcginty65305 жыл бұрын
Yip, agreed John. Same Elitist 'experts' who have all neglected to mention that the fault may have possibly lay with a lazy bastard tradesman whom never bothered his hole to tape the joint up in the first place. The maker of the video has stated that the board was secure along the joists and he is 100% correct in doing what he did.

Agreed gabriel back blocking above the crack will strengthen and stop that crack coming back . Also I would rescrew the affected area
@crinngeteamsquad48313 жыл бұрын
I agree Gabriel it was a good attempt if the only problem was failing drywall tape, but we all know that is not usually why we see cracks in the ceiling. It is either coming lose from screws or screws coming loose from shrinking wood behind drywall. Needs to be secured properly before just making it cosmetically appealing again. That could even lead to worse problems or even dangerous problems down the road.

I would think without putting screws in it and making it stick to the wood behind the dry wall that adding more weight and more placid to it would just make it come down again faster

This is good for a flat ceiling that doesn't keep moving. Mine had a 10 foot crack that also showed up in the same place in all my neighbor's condos. The ceiling joists are 22' 2x12s and they just flex too much to keep the drywall from cracking. It would have helped to add more screws about an inch away from the crack on either side into each joist, which would have required 2 strips of mesh, but the joists would keep flexing and the crack would probably have come back eventually. Instead, I made a 1/4" hole every 6" and put a quarter can of expanding foam in each (while wearing a hat, of course); it glued the drywall panels to the joists and to each other. Then I skimmed to whole thing (after the patch with the mesh tape had dried), because the texture was messed up in other places anyway (though there are probably 20 YT videos on matching all the textures out there). Now it stays nice and flat. The only downside to me it that the lowness of a 7' 6" ceiling is more obvious when it's flat. Someday I might put a light stipple texture over the whole thing, but it will be hard, after all the work I did to make it smooth.

Nick S. You’re 100% correct on all points. AND that problem will be an issue again in the future.
@myopicseer4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The reason you often have this seem problem is because the fasteners were too far apart (allowing the boards to sag, breaking along the seam edge). Always push up with the butt of a hammer to see if either board is moving.

hey SS..actually this one came out nice! I think the humidity got to this one..the board was secure, just needed re-taping..thanks for commenting!
@Johntvancejr6 жыл бұрын
Cracks like this form all the time for reasons other than an unsecure piece of drywall. Changes in seasons/temperature/humidity levels cause expansion and contraction of the joints, and small hairline cracks like this form. Screws and nails aren't going to stop that.

Home Mender water damage from multiple sources - roof leak , broken pipes, water heaters used to be inside kitchens , etc . My house has drywall under plaster job ( original install) so how would you even attempt to either waste time redoing the same appearing cracks from 5 years ago ? Or something else I was told and will be doing? Go to home store buy enough 1/4 in drywall to cover entire ceiling, and make sure to cross over areas where cracks appeared under the new will cover so cracks never reappear ! And problem fixed

hey jody! 1/4 inch drywall is a definite fix and usually my last resort. But oh what a sweet sweet ceiling when its done..thanks for sharing!

I will be repairing a similar issue in my bathroom where the ceiling meets the wall. I would post a photo of it but youtube doesn't allow it right here. Some of it needs to be scraped, but some of it needs to be sanded down because the guy that did it before didn't sand it down properly and now it clearly looks uneven on the ceiling joining the wall. This looks like a very easy tutorial so I am gonna give it a try.

awesome DWD! so good...its hard to sand a painted surface...i like scraping off the ugly and mudding right over it. you got this!

If you didn’t prime new joint compound before you paint it won’t look right.

hey cw.. actually the paint has primer in it on this ceiling so it worked out flawless! thanks for watching!

hey C... current video? this was done about a year and a half ago with an extremely picky customer..they wouldn't have let me go if it didnt look good. I like to use behr premium plus ultra. I find that if you actually use good paint with primer, it covers nice and is rich. If youre not using paint with primer in it by now, you're taking too long on jobs...IMO of course.. Thanks so much for commenting.
