We all miss Captain Newland's beautiful, MASSIVE, Master's salute. I imagine every captain on the Great Lakes knows that Captain Newland is master of his ship. I suppose it is appropriate to not copy Captain Newland's Master salute. We will all be glad when he returns.

Perhaps the temp captain is just respecting Captain Newland's legacy on the Barker? Still one of the best salutes on the lakes. Great catch Paul. Thanks.

I thought from the title we were going to hear unexpected noises from structure or power plant as she passed close. A temporary master for the vessel isn't something wrong.

Yes, the JRB still has a Relief Captain aboard. Andrea Guerriero said Captain Newland (her permanent captain) is still on vacation and won't be back until September. She filmed them the other day when JRB was in the Soo.

Which raises the question, where do ship captains go on vacation? I'm thinking they either LOVE cruise ships or they HATE them....

As to the two different horn sounds, they are perfectly normal except that the high pitched horn vibrates before the low pitched horn. The reason is that the low pitched horn takes more air and a little longer time before it starts to vibrate. It makes an interesting tone, but nothing wrong with it. The two tones could easily be synchronized mechanically or electronically, but it would ruin that unique, magnificent sound.

What I was referring to was normally the Barker salute is much much longer, it generally times in at 65 seconds.
@eulero75
@eulero75 Жыл бұрын
@@PaulScinoccathat’s because you are referring to the master salute, that is long-long-long-short-short, whilst in this occasion they performed the ordinary salute, that is long-short-short. The bridge answers accordingly.

As an intermittent viewer I was unable to ascertain what was wrong with this vessel. Would you care to enlighten me? Also, are you informed enough to explain the unusual bow shape?
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Жыл бұрын
The salute is normally a long drawn out Master Salute, this was a "short" Captains salute, signifying the normal Captain was not on the ship. The Round bow, is designed for more cargo space on the ship. Since these are "lakers" and the travel distance is not great, the efficiency lost on the bow is made up for with the profit of more cargo capacity. (in a nutshell explanation)
@roboftherock
@roboftherock Жыл бұрын
@@PaulScinocca Well, I didn't expect a line on the profit and loss report to be the answer to my query. I had more esoteric options in mind. Also thanks, Paul, for explaining what was 'wrong'.
